I know little about Cat skinning or this work, but it is wonderful to watch. I love these old machines and seeing those men operate them. Thanks for the vid.

A late friend of mine had a D9 and an old Cat cable scraper that he'd converted to hydraulic that he used when it got too hard going for the rubber tired scrapers in wet clay digging ponds. He had a couple of big Euc dozers for ripping and pushing too and they could move a hell of a pile of dirt in a day. Slow and steady wins the race! ;)

Company i used to work for ran things pretty similar. Everybody laughed at our old equiptment when we turned up to a job but stopped laughing once we made a start lol. The oppisition all said we crazy and excavafors and dump trucks are the only way to go. Well that old boss of mine retired and now his ex oppisition has got self propelled and dozer scrapers and pay him good money to turn up a few hours a week and advise. Lol

This push cat (driver) is so slow, he did not catch the stinger until the cat stalled out.

I don't know, but it seems to me that more dirt was moved faster, and skillfully back 45 years ago than today. Today they use excavators (backhoes) to load haulers. They need front end loaders to clean up. Then they use dozers to spread the fill. I don't know, but it seems to me that they are wasting time, no skill. One good scraper man could do both jobs.

tdshaker, you can see that, and these guys weren't even skilled operators on Cats and scrapers. If you get skilled operators on Cats and scrapers and the job ran by someone who knows how to set their work up right, and you can badly outwork hoes and trucks. You don't need any support equipment, and you don't even need a push. But people think speed= efficiency an that's not true

The cat and can operator on the first segment had his apron open way to wide and the push cat operator should have caught his stinger before the c&c was brought to a stop. At least no one two blocked anything.
@mhoff5777

The push cat operator is very slow, with a power shift transmission, that D9 should be right on that stinger. I agree the cat and can operator needs to keep the apron down more in sandy material..

I can remember I run one of them 660 scrapers out of high school in Orange County California and we'd do a canyon clean out and you could not tell how steep that draw was until them two d9 cats hit you and you broke off over that edge and then you was pointed straight down that can would fill up and a way you would go not one of them scrapers had breaks back then you didn't need them you learn how to run with your can and you run wide open as fast as they would go all day long 6 -11s

What is amazing is they will move this dirt 100 times because of packing, they will probably find a dinosaur bone or a screech owl 🦉 to slow down the job.

That push cat dood needs to wake up and get on that stinger and push him. This push cat has a Peterson cushion push dozer, so the operator should be on that stinger as soon as the scraper can is straight in the cut, then give him your power to load faster.

Mark baker, I am sure Joanne could do better. We had young women running Cats and scrapers before, and they were much better operators than these guys. And they ran cable scrapers and we never push them to load them.

This was painfully slow compared to today’s standards. A scraper is in and out of the cut much quicker today than back than and the time between the cut and fill must take forever.
@mhoff5777

Not much for a pan operator. Once you stop dead in the cut, you may as well pull up and leave, this guy is taking twice as long to load as needed. Then stalls the cat out.. Call the Union hall for a real operator.
