Day 13 of our trip was spent wandering through the heart of Bordeaux. Famous world wide for its red wines the city sits alongside the wide river Garonne. It bears the imprint of many rulers and dates from before Roman times. Remote from the emerging power of French Kings it pursued a largely independent course until Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry II of England. This ushered in a 300 year period when the city was part of the domains of English Kings. Henry II removed taxes on Bordeaux wines which gave a huge boost to the wine trade and made the city very rich. In 1453 it was annexed to France but still proved to have an independent frame of mind. Louis XIV finally brought the city to heel in 1653 when his army arrived in the city, Under his successor, Louis XV the city was gloriously reshaped with wonderful elegant quaysides and squares being created. Today the city is a wonderful place to explore, full of life and history.
