If you’re feeling a little bored or stuck with your current warmup routine, here are 3 unique ways to warm up.
Rubber Band
Perhaps you’ve heard a personal trainer compare stiff muscles to a cold rubber band. They give the analogy that if you pull suddenly on a cold rubber band, it’ll snap, and by similar logic, you should gradually stretch your muscles out as you warm up.
We can benefit from this approach in our vocal warmup as well. Instead of just warming up from low to high, we can treat our voice like that cold rubber band by stretching a little bit, then relaxing, then a little more, and relaxing again.
An easy way to try this is with a semi-closed exercise like a lip trill or hum, sliding in a moderate range. Then start a little lower and go a little higher. You’re always returning to the middle to give your voice a chance to relax and reset!
Semi-Closed Songs
Very few warmups start with songs. We usually begin with gentle, semi-closed exercises and gradually increase the intensity and range. But if we use a helpful, protective exercise like an SOVT, there’s no reason we can’t start with songs!
Ideally, if you take this approach, you’ll start with a relatively easy song first and then move on to more challenging material. Singing melodies with an SOVT like straw singing is much safer for your voice than jumping straight into lyrics, because the SOVT itself helps you achieve balance. You simply can’t sing with a lot of intensity through a straw, so you’ll naturally be in warmup mode.
Closed to Open
One last unique approach is to move gradually from closed to open sounds. You can make this really simple and use the same warmup pattern for each cycle.
Starting with closed, you might choose an SOVT like humming. Then you might insert a vowel, but still spend time on the M sound. Next, you might drop the final M sound. And you can end on an open vowel like AH or UH.
Thanks for watching and I hope you got a few new ideas for your next warmup!
