Have a first Edition now for 2 weeks after switching from a Diesel Arteon. I am delighted with the change. The car is quiet and extremely efficient. I'm on night saver electricity for charging and have calculated that 6 euro of electricity is getting me approximately the same distance as 25 euro diesel. The car does feel like a hot hatch and it is fun to drive. You do have to be a little more organized in relation to charging, but in general I've found the switch seamless. I did a return trip to Dublin of 330km, with 50% day driving and 50% night driving and I had 80km range left on the clock. Systems are slightly slow but I can handle the wait for upgrade.

Nicely balanced review - absolutely right VW really know how to make cars, but the software has some way to go. I believe there is a major software upgrade due early in 2021. Your advice is spot on - just wait and see, give VW time to upgrade the software 🙂. This might be my next car, currently drive a Golf, but I'll be waiting until next year to decide.

It might be helpful if you were to mention that all the infotainment problems have not been kept secret by Volkswagen. It is well known they have had problems in their software, and that they have openly apologised and assured their customers that there will be a major update in January which will sort these bugs out, as well as include additional features, and switch on the over air updates, done by the dealer. You also mentioned it was noisy, which is very strange as most reviewers have said the opposite, commended the EV for being one of the quietest EV’s out there, even quieter than the Tesla’s. Nearly all the reviews have said how impressive the efficiency is with the ID.3. Other than those really important points I’ve just made, your review was good, but omitting the information I’ve mentioned, make Volkswagen sound negligent or unprofessional with what they have brought to market, this is just not the case!

Personally I think it is unprofessional of VW to release a car with an unfinished and buggy infotainment system, especially with such an important car for their company.
@warrenbass66
4 жыл бұрын
@@jamescarr9500 Most car companies release buggy software if they have a new infotainment system, it’s not unusual. Volkswagen actually asked the 1st Movers Club, the early adopters of the ID.3, what they wanted VW to do, and offered them two scenarios. First scenario was that VW would hold all ID.3’s until January when the update would be ready to fix the bugs and over the air updates, or the second option was that VW would release the ID.3 in September, and that the customer would have to take their ID.3’s into their dealers for the update. Because more than 70% of the customers chose the second scenario, that’s why it was released in September. This is actually a first for VW to ask the early adopters, i.e the First Movers Club, what they wanted VW to do! You can find plenty of information about this on the net. I think it was very professionally of VW to be open and transparent to their customers about a problem with a new release, so it was the First Movers Club customers who decided the outcome and not VW. Of course we all know that VW haven’t been transparent in the past, but they are actively trying to rectify this!
@jamescarr9500

@@warrenbass66 ok well that is surprisingly open from VW. However, it’s still difficult to understand how a giant like VW cannot release something better. I had a 2016 Golf and for a short time a 2018 Octavia with the biggest infotainment screen available and it worked great. Yes, it’s a new system, new software etc...but I still find it baffling that their most important vehicle for the brand isn’t near perfect! My understanding is that the new Octavia and Leon which both use the same system have worked out the kinks more so.

When will people wake up to the cost of these cars. Lovely car, but the price makes no sense. Ten years ago the cost per kw to make a battery was 1000 dollars per kw now it is less than 100 dollars. So why are they so expensive. It is a con job at the moment by the car manufacturers. We need to wake up.
@columlynch4229

Hello Adrian there might be more than a grain of truth in what you say. The price of ev's are artificially inflated and have not come down in accordance to price per kw. It's a massive transition from ice to ev and It's just to painful ($€£) for them. At least VW are taking steps by sending 33 billion euros over four years as well as paying billions of euros in dieselgate fines .
@chrisdevine4848

Battery cost isn't the only factor. You've got development costs of the electric powertrain to recoup, a less developed supply chain for the (additional) raw materials that make up the car, and economies of scale that haven't matured yet. As such, folks in the know predict it'll be another 4-5 years (2024-5) before electric cars reach parity with ICE cars in terms of price vs features, but then continue to get cheaper and better value. Thereafter ICE cars will slowly be relegated to hobbyists and die-hards (a bit like horse drawn carts, now), until they are taxed or legislated off the roads by 2030.

The hardware seems to be fine and up to par. The infotainment, not so much. If the hardware of the infotainment is not the issue, then we can expect to see everything solved with some software updates, which VW promised to eventually deliver over the air. In that regard, even a 1st edition seems like a reasonable choice, given you trust VW's promise to update the software.

Will this car replace a diesel if you are doing 40k kms a year. I have a night saver rate at home. Will it make a major saving on fuel. Will these batteries handle 400k kms over its life ?
@Hitstirrer
4 жыл бұрын
It will easily handle 40k pa. Assume that's 150k per day 5 days a week. A four hour overnight charge at cheap rates would replace that ready for next day. Simple maths show at least €2k savings on fuel using a home overnight rate. Too soon to know if this particular battery pack will last 10 years at that annual rate of kilometres but experience from other cars show that it's not impossible. Look at figures from taxi companies using EVs.

When I read reviews before my purchase I thought there were minor hiccups but no, there are many and some are potentially dangerous, the mis-reading of speed limit signs for instance!...When is the software update coming? I was told next year but when? Will it be an OTA update or will I have to go back to my dealer? And No! the dealer doesn't know either, I asked. My test ride and a friends model (which as been brought back) was a real mess, my friends had a horrible noise coming from the heat pump that was replaced 2 twice, but failed again in a heavy downpour, the infotainment screen is a mess, and both needs a recode as well as , the touch panel buttons don’t work half the time , it’s trim for me felt the definition of bland I would love to see something like the mk2 polo of old years to break up that sea of gray, in rhd they half the glove box ( a French thing) and don’t move the light button to both an easy access point or right side of the driver. In the id4 they did so why they didn’t in the id3 baffles me, it’s the same for the window switches the engineers should have overrode the account if skoda can do it why can’t id, if this is supposed to be the future I’ll stick with my mk7 in the U.K. . It’s not the fact that is electric is the problem, it’s the fact that 1) it’s slow and doesn’t feel like a 200hp motor pushing you back in you seat, 0-30ok good but it’s like buying 150tsi with 1 gear it will do the job but it’s not ev quick I’m not talking tesla quick , I’m talking enero quick , it’s not even Mach-e rwd extended range quick and that’s the problem it’s the definition of bland , would it hurt vw to do a gray trim roof liner so it doesn’t feel like your climbing into a dark depressing car. We know from both born and Id4 that more performance is an option why can’t we do a bigger motor and add 4x4 without the boy racer interior design it will just push buyers away , as far as I am concerned vw need to sort out the interior, fix the infotainment screen, just put a screen forget the daft buttons all reviews complaining about , add adaptive dampers option, and improve efficiency, the Koreans and Tesla regularly hit 4.4 to 5 miles per kw the Id short run’s 2.1 - 3 that’s not good

@@Damo699 no not really if you look at the recent software updates from 2 .4 and upcoming 3.0 a number of those issues were addressed such as battery warm up on short runs going from 8kwh to 0on short runs then slowly ramp up over 40 miles for longer runs the charging curve on 77kwh and 60kwh packs has also been increase from 98kwh to 130kwh , 2022 models also offered a different interior to brighten up once £.0 finally arrives we may have finally a stable software that doesn’t lock up on a drive . I’m hoping with a mid life refresh due 2024 that the shortcomings of the interior design such as allowing bigger packs a glass roof , giving rhd a full size glove box like lhd models and finally put 4 window switches back on and slight more powerful entertainment system further to this battery degrigation on early models also gas reviled a problem, so vw are altering the battery chemistry and Also inviting a large part of Id fist edition owners back to VW for a battery swap and infotainment swap
