Omg that little kid is so cute! He speaks so well haha. I grew up speaking cantonese in the States. It’s sad to see many people don’t even speak Cantonese anymore in Guangzhou. I remember when I went to Gz as a child, I had no problems if I were to speak Cantonese while ordering food. Then I haven’t went for 5 years until I was 14, and things changed so much! When I ordered “watermelon juice” in Cantonese, the waiter couldn’t understand me. My cousin from GZ had to translate for me :(
My main language is English as I grew up in the west. I’m lucky that I was forced to learn Cantonese at a young age, mainly to communicate with my parents and grandparents. I thought of nothing about it before, but as I grew older and wiser I began to appreciate my mother tongue. I’m thankful that, to this day, I’m much better at speaking in Cantonese than my friends who also grew up in the west and are children of Cantonese speaking parents. Knowing that Cantonese is a dying language, I’ve learn to respect and to value the language. We who are capable of speaking in Cantonese should also cherish it. It could be a lost language faster than you think.

Keep it up...not sure where you are located. You probably have a Cantonese meetup group in your area that you can participate/hangout with new friends, who are also looking to speak and practice Cantonese. :)

Guangzhou is a very different city now! Cantonese language is disappearing faster than I could imagine! How could that be possible? Back to the days when I lived in Canton, it was the Mandarin speaking students ( 北 方 )who spoke Cantonese! Now it's exactly the other way around!
Hi! I really like your channel and appreciate all of your effort in preserving Cantonese. I have learned a lot from your videos too. I’m Malaysian but my ancestors came from 鹤山, 广州. My mother tongue is Cantonese and during 小学与中学, I have to learn Malay, Mandarin & English on top of other subjects. I also learned how to speak Hakka & a bit of Hokkien! So to learn a language, have to start when the kids are young and it’s only an excuse not to learn them.
