So, i am dealing with social anxiety too, and i was planning on "growing" in my 1st year of university a lot, because i could meet a lot of people that didn't know me from school, and i kinda did, but Corona screwed everything and now I haven't seen even my friend in weeks and most likely would not for another month, feels bad man

Glad to see your content pop up on my feed again, I remember watching the anime back in 2016-2017 when I was going through chemotherapy and was out of work for 8 months, and seeing someone else struggling with their issues and problems being played out in front of me did alleviate my woes.

IMO, Watamote such an underrated series. Tomoko's growth from a introvert with an negative outlook to an actually rad girl who isn't trying to avoid people like before really sells how far she has come. Only read the manga so far, but I ought to give the anime a chance whenever the announce a season 2.

Love the video, it is an extremely positive show, this fact is proven further if you read the manga. She has a gazillion friends, became popular, but for who she truly was. Not a fake person trying to fit in like she tried throughout the anime and early manga.

Ive always loved watamote but I always thought it was because i could share her cynical perspective and the suffering from a lack of friends. But now that I am doing a lot better and have plenty of friends and social confidence, I thought that I might not be able to like Watamote so much anymore. Thanks for making this video because now I can recognize something I appreciate even more about Watamote, it is the hope that it gives (and the payoff in the manga of actually getting friends).

Absolutely fantastic video dude, you basically took all of my thoughts on the series and laid them out perfectly. The only thing I’d add on is that another theme of the series seems to be self improvement which we begin to see at the ending (which might be one of my favorite endings for its simplicity yet effectiveness) but in the manga we begin to see more and more she’s no longer trying to push people away because of her preconceived notions of them but has instead formed a big group of friends that like her, flaws and all, and when I got to that point it was so satisfying to see as someone who also has some anxiety, I first watched this going into high school and it really taught me a good lesson about not closing myself off, and seeing things progressively over time getting better for her only made it more impactful for me, I really do love this series

Watamote is indeed very cathartic but also very positive. I found Tomoko's laughter at the end to be also some sort of acceptance of self, Tomoko spent a good deal of the anime trying to change herself into something she isn't to try to be popular only for those attempts to end up in a mess. Tomoko not only laughs at her past but also at the worry of being mojyo.
@Poptienza03

I do wish there was a part 2 which focused on the manga, where Tomoko does make friends with quirky classmates that got used to her, flaws and all. The message is nice, but for manga readers, who are aware that Tomoko did achieve “popularity”, it feels like an analysis cut in half.

Its really a shame that the Watamote anime adaptation came out right at the dawn of the seasonal era of anime. Even its not that old, I think this anime would've had a much bigger impact had it aired between 2017 to 2019. A very nice anime that reflects an exaggerated look at modern anti-social behavior in teens. Also, you are correct in the pacing of Tomoko's growth if you follow the manga. The manga eventually makes the clear that the biggest asshole in the whole world of assholes is Tomoko herself and by her learning little by little from her mistakes allowed her to make friends eventually.

Gotta love your views on anime I genuinely enjoyed. You have quite refreshing views that don't just state the obvious, whether it's appreciating the nihilism of Shiki or the optimism of WataMote. It's a shame your channel isn't more popular as opposed to the likes of more renowned reviewers like Glass Reflection (whom I disagreed with on several occasions, including his negative reviews on Shiki and WataMote, dismissing the latter as "so cringey I'm not even sure whom the target audience is"). Keep up the good work.
