Very informative video. I am a digital nomad and currently on the road, my Wise account is my daily spending account but I use Starling for my main account where I keep my cash. With the exception of a few currencies, the exchange rate you get from Wise is always a bit better than the Mastercard rate used by Starling/Monzo/Curve/Chase/Monese, etc..from my experience. But the biggest advantage of Wise is that in most countries, you can use the account in the same way as locals use theirs, eg in Ukraine I was able to send money directly to someone’s debit card number, and in the Philippines I am able to directly transfer money to a local QR code e-wallet like local people, Saying that, if you are only going on holiday for a few days to a couple of weeks, a Starling, Chase or Monzo account is probably all you need.

@@AliASHTV I don't keept money in there because I use it for travelling not a bank account. As they're not a bank. But they supply bank details they have to follow regulations and laws from all over the world. So in other words one thing might be fine with your bank and won't be with them. So best kept for travelling and just getting paid if you're in a country on a working visa while travelling.
@aussieexplorer5858

@@AliASHTV also want to add. Because they follow strict laws and regulations from all over the world and don't have access to information like a bank does. It takes longer for checks ect. As it all has to be done manually, which is good cause you know no dodgy or scam person will be using them, but can be a little bit frustrating if you use them as your main source for holding money. Not their fault but the laws and regulations they deal with from around the whole world they operate in. Seen so many ppl get upset about this, but really not their fault. If you don't want to have world financial law protection just use standard bank and checks go through faster

@aussieexplorer5858 What is your assessment of how Wise rates regarding financial privacy? I mean versus banking at home. I travel half the year so I am finding Wise very useful, good value and transparent. However, as someone who in principle doesn't like informing the world's financial policeman (USA), and equivalents in PRC etc every detail of my financial life, I question whether privacy is up to the standards of one's home country regular bank.

Quite conflicted on what to do with my Wise account right now… I’ve used the multi currency account since 2018 and while I find it extremely convenient for converting currencies, I’m not entirely sure the fees and limitations are worth it or not… The fees seem to go up every few months. Also neither of my other bank accounts charge foreign transactions fees anymore (one even reimburses foreign atm fees). They probably don’t offer quite as good of a conversion rate, but I need to put them to the test on my next trip side by side with the Wise card. There are so many factors to consider when converting currency so it is sometimes difficult to tell if this is saving you money, costing the same, or costing more. 🤷🏻♂️ It is REALLY nice having account/routing/IBAN numbers in a few different places. That is one of the biggest value props here IMO!

2:40 left: "It costs Wise money to hold large amounts of money" Counter-intuitive from a market perspective. Are you referring to the manpower cost of complying with national government regulations, and US pressure plus treaties that control foreign financial transactions? I mean, a million dollars (versus one hundred) in banknotes does take up more space in a vault but the same digitally does not. Please explain.

I just used the Wise website's calculator. If I deposit $3000 USD they take $18.19 USD just for the deposit to the card plus $9 USD for the card, and conversion ends up being $2972 USD of balance. Then, to withdraw the full amount in cash at the foreign country, I get charged 2% of the amount which comes out to about $60 USD. So, I paid approx $89 USD to withdraw $2912 USD in the foreign currency. Is this still cheaper than exchanging it at a currency exchange booth? I've seen booths charging no fee. I understand their exchange rate would be lower but if it doesn't add up to $89 USD, then isn't it a bargain?

As an expat, I get paid through Payoneer and I am able to transfer payment to my Wise Card which makes it incredibly convenient. I assure you it's cheaper to make purchases through Wise when abroad and to make ATM withdrawals. My US Citibank credit card has a terrible conversion rate and charges about 3% foreign conversion fee. As far as ATM machines, if you use your home ATM card, you are basically wallet raped as the foreign bank will 1) charge you for ATM usage (can't really get around that even with WISE),2) use their own extortionist conversion rate, and then on top of that 3) your home bank will charge you for using your card abroad. With Wise card, you can forget about points 2 and 3. Wise always uses midmarket conversion rates. Just stock your multicurrency card with cash of the country you are visiting. I love it.

Yes, instead of giving them your bank account, you give them your wise account to deposit into. I will soon start receiving social security benefits and I will have it deposited directly to wise to avoid both government conversion to foreign account or if sending in US dollars, conversion of US dollars by foreign bank. The problem here is the horrible conversion rates. Remember, Wise is based in the USA. So, any checks, direct deposits, etc from any entity go into your wise account based i in the USA. Then you direct how to convert that money.

The card really sucks by the way. Everytime you load money onto the card in any currency they over regulate it. For example, you want to load some USD or sterling onto the card, they ask you for documents every single time. Documents like proof of income, payslips, tax returns etc. Almost for every single time you want to load money onto the card. Don't trust the influencers who are probably looking at sponsors.

Hi Gustav! Thanks for the video. I have received my Wise card in Australia and, today, is the first day I started using it. And felt frustrated. That’s how I found your channel. The card has a contactless sign on it, but it did not work neither in the dry clean studio, nor in a cafe. I inserted the card into the payment terminal and it was rejected in the dry clean and was surcharged about 1,5% in the cafe. I paid in AUD and the payment was withdrawn from the AUD account. I checked it in the Wise app. So, I was frustrated Contactless did not work, the card was rejected in one of the places and I paid too much to paying with the card as I first converted USD into AUD and paid for conversion and then paid 1,5% surcharge. I feel perplexed, as I wanted to have this card for a while (as experts like you say it’s great) and finally paid 10AUD for producing the card and transferred USD and Euro to this card. Now, I am not sure what to do because I don’t to experience these troubles and extra expense. Would you please, express your consideration on my situation.✨🙏

I set up my Wise Account last week to transfer money abroad. They gave me a "Membership #" - is this my Account #? Do I still need to open a "Currency Account" with Wise? Thank you.

Is it beneficial for someone who is not frequent traveller. However I do travel overseas once every year and usually travel to 2 countries during that trip.

Yes. There aren't any account fees you can just get the card and keep it until you need it. Even though I'm not a frequent traveller I use it because of it's convenience, there's no need to carry money around and I can just withdraw what I need when I'm within the country, no need to queue at exchanges and it's basically guaranteed that I'm getting the best exchange possible.

Im guessing you can't use the card like a credit card when hiring a car. I was refused a car a while ago because i didactic have a credit card. I even offered to leave the excess in cash. Only reason im thinking of getting a credit card 😢

So we should watch this before we get the Wise Card, 1) You might not be able to get one and he’s worried you might get one i guess, and 2) you might not need it so you won’t see that in the promotional material and 3) if you are color blind you might not see the bright green card if you drop it in the sand, and 4) /if your stupid you can have this guy interpret instructions in your language to English!

I’ve got a question, my problem is that I live in Canada but I came from france and we don’t have the same system for the transaction, in France we need a RIB and in Quebec an “specimens chèque”. So I must have two accounts to receive transactions from my parents who helps me from France and by my employer in Quebec. I need an account that can do both

Anyone go to Japan using this card? How many merchants accepted this card? I ask because I hear Japan is a cash country. I just don’t know if that info is updated.

The Wise website says it is free to add USD to the Wise card from my bank account using an ACH transfer. But what if I want to transfer money from the card back to my bank. Is there a charge for that? Or am I better off just using the Wise card as a debit card and charging money directly from the card in order to use up the remaining USD balance on the card

I have same question - did you get an answer?

No. The wise card worked really well for me on my recent Japan trip. But they do charge a fee to transfer dollars from my bank account to the card. So maybe I misread their instructions. So I don't know if you can transfer money from Wise back to the account. I assume you can since they are linked. And I assume they would charge a fee. But I will let you know if I find out anything definitive. There is probably not much point in transferrring money back to my bank account, since if I want to use the money I can just buy something and use the Wise card. (So it was really just a theoretical question.)

And it's not possible to set custom limits on the card. The daily withdrawal limit is 1500 EUR. If somebody steals your card they can withdraw at least 1500 euros before you realize it was stolen, possibly even more.
