I have spent the entire spring/ summer removing water sprouts and watering hoping to get fruit on my calamandin, but i only got more and more water sprouts 😂 Thank you for your tutorial! I stopped overwatering and only 2 weeks later there came new leaves on all branches 🙏🏻 Going for fruit next season!

@@savannahcitrus7765 yea! They blossoms are coming along and some are on the water sprouts I think bc the limb is bigger. They didn't blossom at all in 2023 after a big freeze so I guess they're making up for it now!

Very interesting, thank you. 2 comments: I had understood that you can get water sprouts as a result of bad pruning. Also, I have been told that if you cut a water sprout formed from bad pruning, the tree will tend to keep producing more water sprouts in that same location?
@savannahcitrus7765

In mY experience, with our trees, every time I prune a limb, if I don't cut back all the way to the trunk joint (about 1/2" from the tree trunk) the tree will re-grow a limb. If I snap-off thAt limb-bud, no more limbs will grow from the cut. 🌳

Can you use a water sprout for cuttings to start new plants

I let some of watersprouts grow to a certain length then tip them in order to branch out. Those new branches do give me fruit. Sooo

Good information. If i airlayer this water shoot branch , and cut it out , and plant ,then will this (airlayered water shoot ) branch yield fruiting earlier.

That's a highly debated issue! I've actually selected a few Water sprouts that I only "pruned-back", didn't remove entirely, just to see if they will produce a flower/fruit next year. I personally do nOt expect the waterspout to mature properly, but I could be wrong! Check back with me in April 2024!!🌳

Water sprouts branch is not produce fruits but if you graf it, it will be the best branch produce fruits
@pimpernell902

Yeah true. I'm sure this guy knows about that, but there's some misconception on water sprouts. I'm not an expert myself but I'm reading conflicting theories. They do seem to agree that the connection to the tree is weaker and will often break off, having wasted all that energy. So there's that. But apparently they can and will start producing fruit, and become "established" themselves. And a big thing, like you said, they're often used as a grafted scion! Which of course turns into an whole new orchard tree. Maybe the tree in our back yard was a grafted water sprout.

Use the sprout to graft onto another tree? Or graft a different branch onto the sprout?
@anonymousfx5254

@@meuandthelot Air-layer water sprout and then graft any citrus on top of it. Given that water sprout have big growth speed, you will be able to grow good citrus way faster than on average trifoliata, etc Water sprouts are good option to get free rootstock in very short term, which you can use for grafting on it smth else you like, which has way more benefits that other citrus trees.

Arent they normally a lighter green color than the tree?
@savannahcitrus7765

Hey Stephen! My experience has been that Watersprouts are lighter-green in colour than productive growth. The exterior texture is very smooth, maybe because it is growing so fast.

Is a water sprout the same as a sucker? I'm guessing all the rain washed out the nitrogen and other nutrients.

Actually you didn't mention the part , where you can turn water sprouts into normal, average branches by simply bending them into growing sides, instead of vertical direction, Bending them horizontally, will convert them into normal branches and in time.
