I just had an idea: decoy snipers Not viable today, but in WW1 when they still used trenches. The idea is to make many, many decoy snipers, realistic gun and all (lens included so the real snipers would be harder to find). And after a shot, pull everyone down, reposition, and pop up again. Of course eventually the sniper would be shot, that many “free” shots seems like a nice idea

I wonder if anyone has thought of putting in the same spot with one in front and one behind. Place a compass at the bottom and record the cardboard’s angle to magnetic north. When the cutout gets shot you can retrieve it and from the position of the cutout relative to a stationary point, the angle of entry of the sniper bullet(calculable from comparing the entry hole of forward cardboard to exit hole on rear cardboard), and the cutout’s angle against magnetic north, you should be able to calculate everything about the sniper’s position except distance. If a second cutout gets hit, distance becomes calculable with the assumption that both cutouts were shot by the same sniper. Then you can convert collected data to an altitude, latitude, and longitude of a potential enemy sniper position making it easier to shell them. Of course this all assumes that both cutouts got shot by the same sniper. But at least you have a target and your odds of killing a sniper are better if you act on incomplete information that if you do not act at all. Thank you all for coming to my Ted Talk on weaponized trigonometry.

Well, the reason this worked so well is because, and not many people know this, but magnification scopes, especially ones from that time period, don't really show the target as clearly or as close up as Hollywood depicts. The fact is it would be hard for a sniper, especially with the dust and smoke and all the other conditions, to see clearly enough to make out more than just silhouettes and dulled colors. You can get a pretty good idea of what I mean if you look up images for "ww1 sniper scope view" ww2 also works because scopes look pretty similar.
