I think people were heading towards being kinder to each other until recent years. When you have certain elements playing at identity politics, constantly race baiting and trying to cause social cohesion to break down because chaos suits their political agenda, much of the good that has been done over the last few decades is rapidly being undone as they quite successfully pit people against each other. I can see much of what has happened in the past, rearing its head and happening again, because of people who abhor western history so much they'd happily tear it down, without ever understanding what can be learnt from it, or the damage ignoring it could do.

The aftermath of WW1 most certainly led to the rise of Nazism and WW2. We were all responsible for this, the treaty of Versailles inflicted conditions on Germany that no developed country could realistically endure. Young German men and boys died horrifically in WW1, something the populace was rightly devastated by and instead of a humane peace making effort from the allies we continued the punishment and economic warfare on Germany. In such conditions it’s little wonder the Nazis rose to prominence. As for freedom speech I hope Neil makes a trip to the Scottish Parliament so he can oppose the new hate speech bills about to be passed by he nationalists.

The germans weren't magnanimous in victory either. Look at their victories over denmark, austria and france in the 19th century. The germans were involved in several partitions of poland. The treaty of brest litovsk with russia was harsh as well.

A historian talking strait to camera mesmerising with a clarity that should be emulated by our leaders .A BBC history documentary ,Lucy Worsley perambulating on buses and trains, dressing up in frocks and gurning to camera ,ludicrous and infantile. We desperately need visionaries like Mr Oliver to lead, and challenge the return of a new “progressive “Stasi.

Hatred does not die. In the 80s, my children took German in high school. We participated in an exchange program with a German school for three years. Short three week exchanges during the respective breaks which due to differing school years worked out well. One year I had three kids come from Germany at the same time that I had a full year Norwegian exchange student. Lovely young men, all of them. But the Norwegian boy refused to stay in my house while German boys were there. He said his grandfather told him about German atrocities and horrific treatment of Norwegians so he hated Germans as well. No amount of talking could persuade him. I refused to give in and so did he. Finally his mother settled it by agreeing that staying in a home with German teens would be unfair. I let him move out to a fellow soccer players home for three weeks. I couldn’t believe it.

Having visited the killing fields of northern France and seen the monuments and graves , it is almost incomprehensible to believe that so many died in such cramped conditions. The ground fought for was sometimes only the size of a football field . It was difficult to see ... heartbreaking 😢
