I'd rather live with the unfavorable consequences of free speech than the unfavorable consequences of overly restricted or compelled speech. I'd support a campaign to legally establish a UK version of the 1st amendment. It's a foundational human right and should be treated as truly inalienable.

Probably before they started the brainwashing. My son found it horrendous at uni for this type of thing. He was there 2013-2017. His friend who has just finished masters so been there ( different uni) 2013-2019 just spouts the rhetoric they are force fed

I was at Uni from 2005-09 and this sort of nonsense was still confined to the Student Union/Council playing at politics. They would try to get regular students to sign petitions and would talk of protests but the average student wanted nothing to do with it. It also helps that I was in science and this craziness started in the humanities departments (especially sociology)

It is interesting that the slogan “white lives matter” is deemed offensive but “black lives matter” is not. Is it me or is this not completely ridiculous and in essence are both slogan not equally as bad?

The man who flew the white lives matter banner over the football ground has been sacked for racism - If the banner had said black lives matter he would have been lauded on the BBC and mainstream media - We now have a media and politicians who hate their own indigenous people and will do anything to promote the far left - People must wonder what we fought two world wars for ?

They’re both statements of fact. It’s this fact that has upset those who are left leaning because they can’t really argue against someone saying ‘white lives matter’ because to do so would mean they hold the opinion that white lives don’t matter. It’s the same way they say if you don’t support BLM you are racist. They miss the point that BLM is a political movement.

I get exhausted thinking about what 'liberal' means today. It doesn't mean what the dictionary claims that it means: 'willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas'. There seems to be an attitude that anyone who doesn't subscribe to what is 'accepted' opinion is not to be allowed to express their views..

I used to work for a lot of different London councils, and you are advised to keep your opinions to yourself, especially when it went against their agenda. At a meet and greet with Islington council, they could not stop stating how proud they were, that white British were a minority and it showed how diverse they were. also they are the smallest London borough with the most mental health issues. Hmm good selling point.

Why do you thing people are getting visits for hurty words on Twatter as an example? Neil Oliver speaks common-sense. I think the beginning of all this was "political correctness" which has ended up being the vehicle on which groups and individuals are actively look for opportunities to take offence. And "abuse" in any sense appears to fashionable - especially among celebrities and those in the public eye. Like Neil, I don't care if someone tries to offend me. We should all be tough enough to take it on the chin without government interference.

he is so right! I was a Lib Dem member for 35 years, but found their wrong-head last election campaign, following on from the disastrous decision to drop the Tuition Fees promise in the coalition just to get hands on power, the last straw. So left the party and joined the Netherlands Greens.

I don't want anyone stepping in to stop someone offending me - I want to know who I am dealing with - and what if the person is speaking the truth about me? I need to know so I can change for better. This is clearly not to protect minority groups but to stop conservative thought being heard.

I like Neil Oliver, 10 years ago when I still watched TV , I would watch every show, in which he was involved, I remember him taking the ancestry DNA test and he was something like 96% Scots descent, the joy on his face was very moving.. I am English with a Welsh surname...Mr Oliver is a rare jewel of free speech and should be coveted as such.

I am loving these Neil Oliver interviews. Sound, well articulated and intelligent. Just putting it out there but his "Love Letter To The British Isles" is a podcast worth a listen. It's only on episode 5 at the moment, so I guess they are 95 more to come. Relaxing and informative, all in about 30 min episodes. 🇬🇧👍🏻

I saw someone say something like “if I can’t tell you I think you’re wrong, I am not free”. This is the situation in the UK right now. You cannot question certain things and it’s being ably abetted by the BBC and various other outlets. There are some simple and undeniable scientific FACTS that people cannot afford to say for fear of losing their jobs. How did we get here??

Free speech should never change as to what it means. BUT it did... Says all you need to know really and it shows we have a huge problem in the UK! I suppose the real problem of free speech is that what you can actually say seems to be diminishing as the passage of time flows. How long until compelled speech replaces freedom of speech?

Some people just will not tolerate another point of view. Being in favour of free speech is not only willingness to allow topics and points of view you agree with but also hearing things that make your blood boil. It is advanced citizenship to defend a person's right to express their belief even though you would oppose with all your intellect that belief.
