Thank you so much. 9th grader here and what we have is not working for our family. We gave it a month to see if we could make it work but it just isn't. I think I will be changing asap. I dont feel so bad now.

You should look up 7 Sisters Homeschool! They have great novel studies that have no busy work. There are just a couple of comprehension questions per chapter, and a section on one literary device. They don't kill the book, and they're very inexpensive.

We've had to make changes already this year, too. It seems that each year brings new seasons of homeschool and, no matter how much we plan, there are changes that need to be made. This is one of my favorite parts of homeschooling, making our homeschool what is best for our kids.

Good for you for switching course when you needed it. High school often hits moms like that. Some hold fast in what they had planned (and often crash & burn), others make changes. I have absolutely loved homeschooling the high school years. And there's SO much more out there than even a few years ago when my first went through high school.

Thank you for sharing this update. My children are much younger, 8 and 2.5. So we have a long time before we need to worry about high school. But I do like hearing about how high school works for different families. We had to switch our schedule around a bit this year. We kept all our subjects, but had to drop music from 3 times a week to once, logic from twice to once, and geography from four times to twice. Its mostly just due to flow. We are putting a pause on her math, she finished second grade in June. So we just started third grade math in July. I quickly realized she's not ready. She needs more practice with addition with carrying and subtraction with borrowing. I bought a workbook with over 10k math problems of addition and subtraction. We can work through that until she understands better. Then we will go back to our math curriculum. Its a wonderful blessing to be able switch, swap, pause, or whatever else we need to for our children!

We have definitely already changes some things. We started doing mostly unit studies and then adding in other elements and it was too much as well. Now we do everything with a separate subject for one child and unit study with another. I don’t now how it’s going to work in the future but I’m learning to stay flexible and do what is best for the child even if it’s not what I would like.

Hey! Fun fact: We found a Christian school in our area that teaches the curriculum we teach at home. In the Fall our three children will no longer be homeschooling. Our children are ready to have someone else teach them. There are days when our children don't do any assignments at all. My oldest son is the reason why I am putting our children into a Christian school. I want my children to learn not to be at home like it's summer vacation everyday. I told our three children that the grass is not green on the other side. Just because you all are going to school doesn't mean it's going to be better. Also I told them that they would have homework, projects and other assignments. They all seem okay with it being that way. But let me tell you, I have to do what I have to do to protect my mental health. Being at home for the last 4 years was messing with my mental state. We will wake up at 5: 00 in the morning and wouldn't really start school until 8:00/9:00 am. By the time my husband came home from work they still hadn't completed a full day of work. Homeschool is not for every child. So we're doing homeschool until May. In September they will be at a Christian school. Do I feel some type of way about that? Yes. I will miss our children being here to keep me company. Of course I may cry at the beginning. At the end of the day it's what's needed. If it doesn't work out then we can go back to homeschooling. Sometimes children just need to be in a school setting. It's nothing to do with you as parent. Sometimes children don't want Mommy and Daddy teaching them. Your son may not know how to express that feeling to you guys. Have you ask? He may think that you may judge him for wanting to go back to school since you have poured all your sweat and tears into him being homeschooled. Plus he's getting older and puberty may be hitting him hard. He may think Unit Studies is for younger children. He needs more mature assignments that are fun and engaging to his personality. If you ask a child at his age what they want to do it's daunting to them. They need to be around other children. Also they need to be with someone else teaching them besides you guys. Maybe you guys can join a Co-op group in your area with other high schooler children, a couple days a week, using the same curriculum you guys are using or wanting to use. I don't know your son but something is going wrong and a big change is needed. I know you stated that your son enjoys what he's doing now. That could be because he doesn't want to accept you. He may still have a disinterest in homeschooling. Pray to God for answers and help. I will be praying for you guys too. Don't have Mom guilt if school (if you can afford it I will try Christian school) is where children need be. At the end of the day do what's best for your child. Don't hold on to your child too long or your child will act out. This is from my experience. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment. I am glad that you are doing what is best for your family. As for my son, he has the choice every year to go back to school. He actually started talking about it yesterday. He has been in public school and it was an awful experience for him, between the teachers and the mean kids. He was telling me how thankful he was that we pulled him out to homeschool him. He enjoys the changes that we made and he still likes using the unit studies as an elective. He is around his friends a lot since we all homeschool. He also attends a one hour karate class three days a week that are full of children of all ages. He actually gets bogged down when we are too social. We have found out what works for him and he is doing great. Thanks for reaching out.

Logging time wasn’t any fun at all. Daily we are using the Masterbooks Chemistry and Ecology. When we get to a quiz, my son takes the quiz and the following day we do a lesson from the Gather Round Chemistry unit. On that day we do the Teacher’s Guide, all the Student Notebook pages, the experiment, and the observation log. We are doing US History daily. He is taking notes in his School Nest notebook instead of using the student notebook.
