I came into ToTK with over 200 hours sunk into BoTW, and one of my favorite things to do in the latter game was screwing around to see what the physics engine would let me get away with. So immediately after getting Ultrahand, I went out of my way to start stapling trees together to bypass as much of the level design as I could. It was obvious that you were supposed to go in a sort of counter-clockwise direction around the islands, which would naturally introduce you to all the mechanics you needed to learn along the way, and my approach of disregarding the designer's intended direction felt really empowering at first. I felt like "Oh yeah, I know Breath of the Wild, I get what they're going for," and I just did my own thing. It wasn't until I started a new save (so all I wanted to do was get off the islands as fast as possible) that I realized how much vital information I unintentionally skipped over. That's kinda the paradox of the freedom this game gives you. It wants you to be able to do your own thing whenever you want, but it also has a story that it wants to tell, and it tries railroading players into the direction they need to go. I've talked to a surprising number of people who accidentally went HOURS without the Paraglider because they thought "Eh, I'll do the main questline stuff later."

I didn't play BOTW, so this was all fresh for me. I got really hooked on the exploration, it reminded me of playing Elden Ring, where I was so immersed in the world and wanted to explore all the places, find everything hidden, etc. So I actually really enjoyed the tutorial on the sky island and tried to explore everything there - the limited stamina and tools actually made it even better in my mind because you were forced to find solutions with ultrahand, ascend, or taking one of those wing gliders. I love how the world is full of things to find, sure, it's not always super good stuff, but through the fusion and cooking mechanics, I never felt any item was useless. And even if it's just a Korok under a rock, the incentive to explore is strong for me. That being said, a huge part of it for me is just seeing the world, and if I had played BOTW, I'm not sure how excited I would be to revisit the places in Hyrule that are more or less the same. Now I just want someone to take the best elements from Elden Ring and TOTK and fuse them into the best game ever made haha love your work jakey, keep it up!

Having played both games, I actually adore how they reused the map and have had a hugely positive experience. Major landmarks such as stables and towns are in the same place but all the fast travel and item locations are different. They also added the sky and depths maps so nobody feels cheaped out with no all-new maps.

As someone who played BOTW, I found the sky Island to be a good time. Very nice too since I hadn't played BOTW in years, so a lot of the skills I gained had rusted and needed to be relearned. One thing I will say that I noticed is that the sky island was more linear, imo compared to the great plateau. TOTK very much pushes you to the ultrahand shrine first, then fuse -> ascend -> recall, whereas the shrines on the great plateau can be done in basically any order. Playing it did feel a little wierd considering how open the rest of the game is. One last thing I'll mention is I'm not afflicted with Goopy Goblin Gamer Brain (tm) as much as others, so learning little story bits about the goat ghost (goatst?), the robo-homies, and the robo-not-homies was also fun for me.

@smsry

I think it's just unfortunately unavoidable that the tutorial feels like a slog to BOTW players because we're so used to the core mechanics and if you've played BOTW you probably played it for upwards of 40 hours, and you're already used to having many hearts and stamina and the paraglider. And when you come to Tears, you loose all that for the sake of a new game, but the problem is the base game is basically the same, and the game forces you to relearn everything because it has to accomodate for new players. That's why it feels like a slog.. A game where it actually works is somethin like God of War 2 and 3.. when you go from 2 to 3 you loose all the health and upgrades and what not at the start, but it never feels like you're ripped off or boring to go through the tutorial because the game's completely different with new levels and platforming designed for a completely new game.

The great plateau and the starting sky island are some of my favourite memories from BotW and TotK. At some point you get a large enough stamina wheel to just jump up any cliff that you come across, or in TotK, you get enough parts/zoanite to make a vehicle to fly up. The start is where I feel my ability to solve problems in unique ways is put to the test. There aren't any really difficult parts, but I love seeing a higher island and thinking "Hm, I know I'm not supposed to be able to get up there, but I WILL get up there." Making long columns of trees stuck together that I thread through the geometry of the buildings to give myself a bridge to cross gaps, whatever it is, I find it extremely rewarding, and it's a level of challenge that I feel the further into the game you are the less you'll come across it.

Other than that, I would say the tutorial did a great job in hammering home the abilities given.

Dynamic tutorials that give me a sandbox to figure out the tools are always my preference. The way the new Zelda's approach to mechanic introduction is my ideal way to be introduced to a game. Instead of a game sitting me in a corner and saying "THIS NEW FEATURE IS VERY LINEAR, OR WILL ONLY APPLY IN THIS STAGE, OR IS PROGRAMMED TO ONLY WORK IN THIS SPECIFIC WAY SO DONT GET TO CREATIVE ABOUT IT BUSTER", this feels like a personal hyperbolic time chamber to become the billy bad-ass that will absolutely gamer the NPCs into space with our science experiments.

Going from ToTK to Pikmin 4 was wild to me because the design philosophy around tutorials was so different. ToTK's tutorial island was a bit of a chore, but I was also just having a good time being back and exploring and occasionally learning something new. When starting the Pikmin 4 demo I felt like I was getting talked at and my hand held all the time. I almost didn't buy the game because of it, which would have been a shame because I really enjoyed it once the crew wasn't telling me how to do every little task and what quests I should be completing. I really wish the philosophy of player freedom would break into tutorial structure more because in my opinion a game is way more fun when you learn by doing on your own instead of being told everything for an hour.

After enjoying BOTW a few years back, I played this game COMPLETELY blind; I didn't even look at the box before playing, so I had no idea what new stuff was in the game. I didn't even know what the abilities would be, so when I saw the ascend ability - how you could phase through basically any ceiling at any time - all of my expectations were thrown out the window since the idea of that was (and still is) so insane to me. I was ready to believe anything was possible at that point. For all I knew, the whole game could've been sky islands and the glider could've been removed (in favor of the game's zonai machines and the enhanced movement of the ascend ability), so I wasn't looking at the tutorial as a slog that I needed to get through before I could get back to BOTW basics --- I was looking at it as an introduction to a potentially all-new experience. I was actually a little bit disappointed to go back to the normal world layout after the tutorial ended since I was so enamored by the thought of this, but since the game keeps rolling out cool new shit after you land, I've found myself pretty satisfied with what I've played so far

Honestly, the way to improve Tears of the Kingdom by 1000% would be to have Link find permanent weapons (The Master Sword, a spear, a short sword, a hammer, a bow, and a magic rod) that have minimal base damage, then only have the fusion materials be breakable. Those fusion materials could not only provide status or elemental effects, but could for the bow offer a double or triple shot. The breakable weapon system seriously discourages combat, particularly where you don't get experience points or much in the way of progression items or rupees. But, if you saw a lionel you'd be pretty quick to take it down to get that sweet, sweet fusable material to make your sword heckin neat.

For me, TotK is like a magic trick, because it took a core gameplay system that didn't really jive with me in BotW, and by just switching up the slate of abilities Link gets, made that core gameplay an absolute blast. In BotW, I'd get to a body of water and despair, because I knew I was just gonna be using Cryonis to slowly cross it the same way I did every other body of water in the game. But in TotK, every lake or big pond became an entertaining puzzle to solve, because making stupid boats with Ultrahand is just so much fun. I can't remember who said it, but the way they described TotK's abilities is that they make you feel like you're cheating, and the game wants you to, and I think that's the perfect description.

Its really funny that we've all just accepted that all squeezing through cracks or whatever or holding doors is loading times. Most of the time it isnt. Its usually just there to control the pacing or make things feel more cinematic and has nothing to do with loading. In Death Stranding everyone defended the cutscene that happens automatically at the start of every BT encounter with "nah they gotta have that unskippable little cutscene there cause its prolly loading in all the ghost enemies and boss fight that you could trigger, y'know?" but Kojima Productions saw all the complaints and added an option to turn that cutscene off and it caused no problems at all. It wasnt for loading jack.

I love videos like this, and would definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom once you finish that and the same goes for Final Fantasy 16. Not trying to defend it, but as someone who’s played FF14 for the last 2 years and is caught up on the story/expansions, they definitely take their time letting their story and characters get fleshed out and it’s not just because 14 is an MMO. It genuinely allows these big climactic and emotional moments build up properly so that there is an emotional payoff. That being said, I could totally understand the opening of the game being jarring to someone who isn’t used to this team or just isn’t interested, especially the part about walking a little bit and then getting a cutscene. The good thing is that you can skip the cutscenes if you so please :)

I didn't really care for how long the tutorial went on either, but I *especially* didn't care for how linear it was. In BoTW you could do the shrines in any order, but in ToTK if you don't do them in the exact order Nintendo wants you to, you end up like me- having to backtrack from the final one because you don't have Ultrahand yet so you can't make a bridge. I think the tutorial in Tears of the Kingdom initially was frustrating - but that's primarily because I knew what was to come. I mean comparitively it functions the same as the Great Plateau in BotW but nobody complains about that because it still felt pretty free. And it's the same here, the tutorial islands still have plenty to explore, but coming BACK to Hyrule and having to do this as opposed to this being an INTRODUCTION to Hyrule makes it feel more like an obstacle to what you want to be doing. That being said, as you guys mentioned, as it introduces all the new mechanics I started enjoying it a lot more as I got engaged with the new features, especially considering how much tutorialisation they definitely need. For the first hour I was a little unnerved because I thought the game was holding my hand too much but by the time I got to the end of the tutorial I was like "Oh actually I'm kinda glad they did this otherwise I don't think I would have used any of these abilities to their full potential" And ultimately it's all a moot point, I completed the game and the time I spent doing the tutorial is a drop in the ocean to what I ended up playing. In retrospect it felt just right.

Man, i fucking love this game. I haven't really been able to get back into games FULLY in a long time. I can't even say im halfway through, yet i am FULLY into this fucking shit like its crazy. I feel like Nintendo really made something nearly flawless for me as a gamer, and i can't wait to keep playing and explore every single inch of this game

I got high as shit and blazed (heh) through the tutorial in... 5 hours. It was so long. But I didn't mind it because my childhood sense of wonder kicked in like immediately and I was happy to explore all the new mechanics. Even within the tutorial section, there are so many different ways to approach puzzles or problems or exploration, and that's very representative of the wider world once you land in Hyrule

Been gaming for 35 years. Played through BotW twice, and I am of two-minds about the tutorial in TotK. I found it just a little bit too slow for my liking, but after watching my partner play through it, I realized she absolutely needed that time on the sky islands to get a handle on the controls and abilities. BotW was her first adventure game, having only played like The Sims and 2D Mario games before that. She's played through BotW like 5 times over the years, and she still needed that time to adapt. I think if you have a lot of experience with different types of games and systems, that tutorial area might seem a bit slow. But if you're newish, or stick to one type of game, it's probably going to feel just right.

Only few weeks ago I played (and still playing 120 hours in, being more or less only half way done) Breath of the Wild for the first time. Wow. I wish I wasn't poor af and could play it years ago because it's one of the greatest games that I've ever played. The freedom it gives you, the huge world to play in, the combat, resource management, puzzles, physics and chemistry engine and sooo much more. I can't wait to try out Master Mode after I'm done. Hearing all the good things about TotK and how it improved upon BotW makes me beyond excited to play it one day! I'm a bit sad hearing you not being very excited about TotK though. Especially compared to RE4 video.

I've never played the Zelda titles before Ocarina of Time, but I have played every one since then. In this one I was far more interested in the new build mechanics. I also love how they put things in place that helped some of the pain points from the previous game. Like rain, you can make potions or get a suit. I also loved how you can glide everywhere using the towers, I barely used a horse. I just glided, plus when the the debris fall from the sky, I would almost always ran up to it to reverse time and glide. Overall i liked the game. I think the Temples were a little on the easy side compared to OOC or Twilight Princess. It feels more like an expansion pack than a sequel in a lot of ways, I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Pretty sure that's how the development started. They started it as an expansion but quickly realized they had wayy too many ideas to fit into an expansion, so they just made a sequel instead.

Having played BOTW I felt like the tutorial in TOTK was way too linear. It felt too restricting and guided for a sequel to a game that I loved for it's openness. Whereas in BOTW you could tackle the first shrines in any order and explore the plateau, the sky islands were a set path you couldn't go around however you liked. It also just told the player way too much about the small stuff which would be way more satisfying to discover on your own through gameplay and experimentation.

For me the Great Sky Island was dope as fuck because of just how many ways of doing shit this time around there was. Like, if you're someone who likes to not just solve the puzzle, but go back and see how you could've solved the puzzle, or maybe take an alternate route back to where you were instead of retracing your steps, it's really satisfying compared to the Great Plateu. Which btw is also dope but I think there's just a larger variety of ways to do things in TotK in general. That's my take

When I played BOTW i had a lot of fun learning the combat and eventually mastering it, and beating master mode. So when i played totk, i felt kinda disappointed that the difficulty was the same and that there wasn’t a harder mode in the game. Like in botw, i had a hard time with it and tried really hard to gather materials to upgrade my armor and then having a much easier time with fighting. However, in totk i was able to beat the whole game with standard health and no upgrades on the armor. Also, i play games to lose myself, and this is very niche but at the time my life and work resolved around CAD (engineer student here). When i used the fuse mechanic i was like “oh wow, my game has become my work” and i didn’t feel like messing around with all the crazy creations that you could make in totk and just made basic stuff, or the fanbike when i got sick of exploring the underground.

As far as the tutorial goes, the sense of aesthetic discovery is what carried me through. Look at all these weird little guys! What are they about? The color scheme, etc. reminded me a lot of what you said about Halo 3 in another video. Super warm and inviting, somehow.

You guys mention Tsushima, something that may make a good discussion point (or is maybe just my personal gripe) is the issue where new skills sometimes actually detract from gameplay. Things like ghost stance or standoff kill streaks, which take away your need to actually engage with the game's excellent combat or it's stealth systems. It always bothered me that I feel like I'm playing less of the actual fun gameplay as my character progresses through the skill tree.

dk if it still matters but id love to add my two cents on the sky island tutorial in Zelda. I went back and played first thing after the midnight release so maybe I was a lil too sleepy to criticize but I was crazy immersed and starstruck at just having my hands on the game. I was so interested in the smallest details like the inventory ui change, or how link sings songs from previous games when you cook now, or even how you the perfect time to flurry rush on constructs is to jump when their red eye glows. I also spent a majority of my time by taking the breadcrumbs they give you and imagining what I could be able to do with them in the future. I think the game does an even better job at the whole sandboxy openworld thing then possibly any other game.

About the Tutorial, I first saw my friends play it, and, yes, it feels almost like a chore, the new mechanics are amazingly cool, but I felt that the place was kinda, uh, linear I guess? Like, the Great Plateau felt like that at times, like when you see the old man cutting trees, and you can cut one to make a bridge, it's fun, but when you are in the open world, an opportunity to do something like that again is rare.

omg nakey jackey plays destiny 2 that means i gotta get back into it, gambit is like my favorite activity but only when paying with friends tbh... also, my first zelda game was botw, and i feel like tears of the kingdom is truly the best sequel it could have while also being friendly to new players. it sucks at first to basically not have ANYTHING from botw, but then you start getting used to the new stuff, and THEN you go to a stable and they have!!!! THEY HAVE YOUR HORSES!!! that was huge for me like i almost cried. it feels balanced, much like how botw had these nods to previous games, but much more intertwined

Finally came around to watching this. Would totally watch a podcast of this kind of conversation on gameplay design and reception. It's interesting how both FFXVI and Ghost of Tsushima kinda disrespect the players time through different means. I want gaming to be accessible to the widest audience possible because that's how the industry gets to grow. TOTK's tutorial felt like it was really long but I'm guessing that's cause they weren't sure how to approach a tutorial for ultrahand that also taught new players how to do everything from BOTW. It's really just there to get you comfortable with a more complex ability before it lets you run wild with it.

I actually enjoyed the slow nature of the game's start. It felt very organic, with Link basically going caveman and working his way back to his normal status. This is something other games have toyed with: how does Link become Link? But it was always very quick and then you were in a silly tunic. This game felt to me very immersive. And I also like how everyone in the world remembers who you are. No one seems to forget that you saved the world only a few years earlier.

After rolling credits on TotK I immediately went to replay BotW because I felt as though I didn't see all of it (I was very right), and the tutorials are very different other than their structure. BotW is so much more free, which is incredibly enjoyable as someone who knows how to engage with the world now, but my first time I missed so much on the Plateau, where even after my first playthrough, I didn't have any reason to revist the skyline for non quest reason

I didn't like the TOTK tutorial because not only is it long, but restrictive as all hell, but it also doesn't nearly give you as many tools I really hate how TOTKs tools are hidden behind fetch quest walls, it's insane For story + gameplay I adore Kid Icarus Uprising for the 3DS
