As a technician for many years I never thought that I would have any interest in a GM produced six cylinder engine yet here I am. You’ve put a lot of work into the content here as well as taking the 4200 to it’s limits of power versus durability. Almost all engines are capable of making crazy HP numbers but I like the ones that have the capability of making power and being reliable enough to run as a daily driver if necessary.

Dont try that with a 2jz especially with stock mains! I know for a fact the g42-1450 replica turbos (78mm compressor wheel) have made 1050-1100 whp on a barra with a th400 so, might need to step up to a turbo with a slightly bigger compressor wheel, or a more over driven 76mm like the new 76/85

Turning up the boost and making less power is from two things. Obviously the trans is hurting and won’t help but charge temps at 300 plus degrees is thin air even though it’s pressurized bring the charge temps down and you will see power increases dramatically. If the trans plus the charge temps don’t help the power then your turbo isn’t capable of the air flow to meet the 1000 hp goal. I would love to see a compressor map on the turbo I suspect it is inefficient at the higher boost levels and is far beyond its sweet spot . Good luck guy! Great content!

At 43 psi it shouldn't have an issue making 1000, we make 1000 on 32 psi in barras here in Aus and they're only a 4L ,I honestly reckon it's the exhaust being too small holding it back, don't need back pressure on a turbo car, manifold and turbo provides plenty, I'd be going about a 4.5" dump with a 4" system, this is what we do on big frame turbos here 👍 It's 4.2L it's bigger than some v8s lol shouldn't be struggling like that.

How does the dyno graph look. Maybe if you can’t the the torque up just try to get the engine to make the same torque higher up (different cams?) because the math means that 750ftlbs at 6000 will make less hp than 750ftlbs at 7200. Also it has a lot of back pressure so maybe more exhaust valve lift and duration? I’m not an expert at this just throwing ideas out😂. I’m wondering for such high boost, are the head and cams a restriction? Obviously the drive ratio being that high, there’s a problem with the hot side. Be it the header or the turbo… Seems to me this engine should be easily comparable to a built/stroked 2JZ. Meaning what you give it vs, what it gives you. Turbo sizing may differ if the head flows aren’t comparable though… Also I’ve noticed, big hp 2JZ’s don’t spool the turbo till it seems like redline lol. This thing spools it way earlier… which seems obvious the turbo is still too small. Fuel consumption would be a good tool to better determine what exactly is going on… like BSFC… or lbs or l/hr…? You’ll figure it out, no doubt… 👍👏🤘

Great job! Good luck. Also, for THAT much power, I have to wonder how much more cam duration would help. I also wasn't sure about the intercooling setup.

I think it's a combination of transmission/converter issues. I do think that turbo is a touch small for the engine size but I also think that it can make close to 1000whp but it's going to be at the end of it. I had an 8082 t4 1.25 billet compressor wheel eBay turbo that I think would have been great for this combo. It made more power per psi than a vs 7875 1.25ar turbo. But there is a tradeoff when trying to make big power with relatively smaller engines. A 1000whp turbo on a small engine is going to have lag where a 500whp turbo will come on almost instantly. Pick the turbo that's going to meet your goal. If it's an et then use the turbo for that. If it's a whp goal then pick it for that. Or if it's a deal like yours maybe have two turbo. One to hit your 1000whp goal then once it's done put the other back on for your et goal and you can sell or repurpose the bigger one.

Theres alot more to a turbo then just the turbine wheel, thats often over emphasized when there are more limiting factors that contribute to turbo characteristics, its usually housing AR size and compressor wheel that is the limiting factors before the turbine wheel is ever a limiting factor. The turbine wheel just drives the compressor wheel which is the dictator of how a much a turbo will flow, and the turbine housing AR contributes much more to back pressure then a turbine wheel does.

Hats off to you for pushing this platform to where it is now. I’m excited to dig into mine this summer. That being said I’m surprised Precision suggested the 7675 Sportsman. That turbine just isnt big enough or efficient enough to get the job done especially on a big displacement in-line 6. Your eMAP values confirm this. I would personally suggest a 7685 or 8085 Nex Gen from Precision. All the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder cars breaking records are running those and making absolutely crazy power. I’ve actually been told by the guys at English Racing that after the 6466 just jump right to the 85 series turbines. Skip the 75 series turbines completely. You have an older video kinda touching on this as well. I think it was an old GT35 that you were running and while it’s eating suggested it could reach a number, you found that with the larger displacement engine you needed to move up in size. Hope this was helpful and I’m looking forward to seeing what 2024 has for you and everyone else digging into the powerplant.

I'm surprised that there's still question and doubt on how to make more power with a turbo. Although, it's one of the only things I learned on my own with multiple turbo sizes and engine sizes. It's the exhaust wheel size. The AR. And how much it can flow.

Hats off to you for all that you have accomplished. Keep the faith, I am sure you will hit 1000whp very soon! Pretty sure that engine has already produced near that power!

you should put It on an engine dino when you get the chance, bet it makes 1000hp to the crank.

Man what y’all have done with these engines is great. I’d love an all forged low-boost (5-6psi) with a good cam for low end torque for an efficient reliable unique engine in a 60’s IH scout for daily and off roading.

Put a ZF8hp trans in it. There's a few controllers for em.

Personally, I'd recommend addressing the B to B ratio. In addition to sorting out the trans. Also, a hub dyno seems like the next logical step. Y'all doin badass work 🤙

You might be a valve spring change away from 1000whp. The tell tale signs of weak springs are there as you added boost above 30# of boost, especially bad as you creep to 40# plus boost and HP was flattening out apart from the wheel spin. Your current springs are not up to the task IMO, you mentioned in a past video they are Crower 68195-24 (66lbs on the seat and 174lbs open) Try a different 2JZ spring, maybe a Brian Crower BC0300HD (102# on the seat and 215lbs open) since you are not revving much past 7500rpm these should work and are a relatively cheap upgrade.

Currently looking into that. We have those Crower springs shimmed higher than that, just so you know.

You should consider getting a Sonnax Smart Tech drum for the TH400. Not cheap but it will free up 30 hp and be safer. How about a Garrett turbo?

This build is awesome… I can’t help but wonder… what one of these with a slightly smaller displacement (de-stroked) down to say 4.0L or even 3.8L. Obviously sacrificing the low end torque for more extended RPM range and ultimately gaining that lost low end torque for top end horsepower. Obviously this would mean more valve spring and a more suitable cam profile. Just curious if this platform would respond to the same tricks that have been applied to both RB’s 2J’s and Barra’s. I’m also curious what are you currently turning this out to? And is there any strength left in the block and rotating assembly to even turn more rpm. Then there is the most important question of law of diminishing returns (is it worth it?) non the less, as good as it already sounds and the response you have gotten out of this thus far, it would be cool to see done. A 9 or 10k rpm screamer. Obviously in this platform (ford fairmont) the torque is likely going to get you the better overall ET, but in a lighter platform where torque off the line wasn’t as crucial, may be worth investigating. Likely an expensive investigation at that. This build is great either way and I will continue to follow.

dude you already got as good of an idea as i think you can get. aside of making changes, and physically trying them to acquire "Das Data" lol. my personal opinion is stay away from those custom tweaked turbos. not that there's anything wrong with them. but ive always known them to be used in and for very specific applications. usally done on a very well known powerplant. the ameri-bara is not a known example of this. but boy is there alot of potential. and just swapping turbos is way easier to do. simultaneously reducing the number of "could it" factors after making said swap. let the turbo companys R&D department do the R&D. us the consumer we just want more boost. we all most likely dont need another headache in our lives. and the only other thing is you've out grown the dyno myfriend. it happens. we'll get through it

Is there any need to play with the exhaust VVT with the turbo/manifold/injector changes? Is the exhaust backpressure measured after the exhaust of the head or turbo? Is there any way to make the exhaust flow from the head less turbulent: even pulses, collector merges, straight path to turbo, larger flange type, or larger turbo exhaust diameter?
@Jazz3006

I'll be honest, I haven't watched all of your videos on this build, but I'm assuming you're running an intercooler. Do you have pressure measurements pre and post IC? How about post turbine? It just seems like there is a restriction either on the intake or the exhaust side that is causing things to go wonkey and rob power.
