The sound quality and speed of narration with pauses excised is great.

As someone with an irrational fetish for elite private institutions and a product of one (though not an ivy) myself, I harbor very similar sentiments toward my alma mater and personally question whether my maladjustments to life’s underwhelms is because of all the hyped grandeur of those four ritzy years of college. Was it all just a scam?! Great episode.

100%--i really did think that if i just got into X college, everything would fall into place, which really is just the structure of all the best scams, isn't it? hope you still had an enjoyable time nonetheless, though, and learned a ton!!

Interesting topic! With how you discuss the importance of office politics and finding professional mentors at work, what is your take on quiet quitting and the idea of acting your wage?
@CeceXie
2 жыл бұрын
i think "quiet quitting" is just another way to dress up the idea of "setting boundaries." i definitely agree that if there is no upward mobility, there's no reason to over-perform, but i also feel strongly about doing the best work that we can in situations where raises/mobility/etc. are possible and realistic. tbh, if i were in a situation where i felt like i had to "act my wage," i would probably still over-perform but be job hunting at the same time

If you look at the Iowa workshop system, you’ll find that all writers will have a history of jobs that fit more into an odds and ends category. Writers can be mechanics, boat hands, baristas, they can be terrible at their jobs or even amazing. The point is that a menial task like steaming milk for a latte ends up be meditative because it’s asking for you to devote 100% of your mental energy to something that doesn’t require that much brain power. It’s no different than washing dishes. Genius hides inside restaurants and behind the booths at state fairs because a genius never thinks they’re better than wiping down a counter or the person whose job it is to wipe it down.

totally! i definitely feel some imposter syndrome over the fact that i don't have an MFA and didn't go to the iowa writer's workshop, but alas :)
@maiabhakta

@@CeceXie most writers don’t attend Iowa, but it’s lauded as the premier workshop because of the myth is that surrounds the writers it has produced. Writing =/= writer and having a book can be a means to an end if you wish to be on a tenure track. Not all books are produced by MFAs, but the consensus is that some secondary education is necessary in order to have a career that involves writing because all post-grad programs involve literacy. You’re describing a textbook meant for college students to pick up or be assigned to read so your best option is to market your work to MBA and JD course instructors, maybe by first releasing articles that will also be chapters in the final product because there is usually a two year wait between being picked up and being printed. It’s not unusual to go this route and it won’t prevent people from buying it because of the path toward name recognition.

Loved this episode. Everything improved from your first episode (which I also loved). Pacing, editing, video and audio quality! The 4 soft skills at the end were really helpful for me. I just went from a small intimate firm to a huge global one. I work 99% remotely and am always trying to find ways to show my face or interact with the higher ups! Lol
