Actually funfact, you can add certain things into water to make it more or less hydrating. That is how the concept of things like PegLyte (that stuff for colonoscopies works.) So Peglyte works because it has a high electrolyte concentration but low sugar concentration, so it stays in the GI system longer and allows it to flush out the GI track. Gatorade contains both electrolytes and sugar, which activate the Sodium Glucose transporters and will actually increase absorption, unlike peglyte which has decreased absorption. This has nothing to do with WaterTok, but is pretty interesting nonetheless.

I'm T1 diabetic, so I've used all this stuff in the past to make flavored water, because I have to have sugar free liquid, because it's just really difficult to take insulin to cover sugary drinks, since they hit your bloodstream so fast. What I've learned, is that some things that say they're sugar free, really aren't. Like those skittles packets. There's some other sweetener in it that raises my blood sugar faster than regular sugar. I've found it in a lot of powdered "sugar free" drink mixes. The liquid mixes never seem to do it though. I think it's dextrose, or maltodextrin... I forget, not really sure which is the culprit, but I can see my blood sugar shoot up on my cgm while I'm drinking it. If your pancreas is normal, then your blood sugar will come back down eventually, but I think it's crazy that it says sugar free on the thing and it's like it's not.

a little bit late to the party, but: afaik dextrose is pretty much just glucose, and acts as such (the solutions for infusions are even labeled as "dextrose"), so if it's in the supposedly "sugar-free" products that is just.... scummy and dangerous

I had heard this before, but didn't really think much of it until I started drinking unsweetened tea I brew. I thought it would be like water and actually bring my blood sugar down. Nope. Raised it. Not too bad though, since it doesn't have a ton of caffeine. I actually haven't tested black coffee yet. Thank god for correction doses, though. I take so many, sometimes I think about just sticking my pen needle in my stomach and taping it there like a diy insulin pump. Ooh, you probably already know this tip, but if you're trying to get it down quick, I always take my correction dose, then drink a glass of water. It seems to make it kick in and start coming down fast.

@@tangerinemarmalade3326I was just about to comment that dextrose is basically sugar I'm glad someone else said it. To clarify a bit more there are two main types of sugar. Glucose that is straight blood sugar and fructose that has to be produced by your liver. Most sugar is a combination of both. Some people's main problem with sugar is their blood sugar others is their liver. For people with healthy bodies that can process blood sugar it is better for them to use fructose free sweeteners because fructose can cause a lot of problems. I think this is where the line got crossed because people who couldn't eat sugar could if they used things that were broken down immediately into blood sugar. The opposite problem is also true with sweeteners like agave nectar being marketed as so much healthier than sugar because it has a low glycemic index. It basically won't raise your blood sugar because it's almost all fructose which is good for diabetics in moderation but is a huge amount of sugar for your liver to process. Bottom line there are many types of sugars and bodies what is okay for one isnt for another. We should be labeling the sugars for what they are instead of their supposed benefits.

Years ago, I used to drink soda ALL the time. I wanted to drink more water but had a hard time, because I didn’t care for plain water. So I started by adding the liquid crystal lite (0 cal, 0 sugar) water flavoring. I slowly used less and less of the flavoring until I didn’t need any at all. Commercial juice products sit in vats for weeks at a time, pasteurized which destroys most nutrients, then fortified with lab created vitamins and flavor packets. The majority of fruit juices on the market contain a high level of sugars either meeting or exceeding sodas and other sugary beverages. The best thing to do with juices would be to juice fresh fruits at home. Even then, the sugar content is super high. I always found the packets too sweet in the small amount of water they recommended to mix. I also have an autoimmune disease that requires me to drink *more* water than most people should. After finding watertok, I realized I could mix and match the flavor packets, only using tiny amounts in larger cups, etc. Sometimes it’s nice to change it up, especially when you have to drink so much water. It was one of those moments like 🤦🏼♀️ why didn’t I think of that sooner? Another nice add in if you don’t want to do fresh fruit is a product called “true lime” (there’s also lemon, orange and grapefruit). It’s dehydrated citrus juices, put into small sweetener like packets. It’s just the fruit juice that’s been crystallized, so no added sugars or artificial sweeteners. They add a lot of flavor without anything else. ❤

The bloat is SIBO. it’s a bacterial overgrowth that can cause you to bloat like crazy - not just with foods but with water. I’m actually wrapping up being treated for this by my doctor now! Not because of water tk but because I thought I needed everything in my pantry and fridge to be sugar free. I’m also a recovering disordered eater and work with a therapist and nutritionist. Because of all of this, I feel it’s ok for me to say: this is a scary trend. Not because we can’t Agree if it’s water or juice but because when you have a big platform and you’re training people how to feel full by essentially eating water, that’s a classic ED symptom. So yes, the arguments can be a little much, but the principal- that these people have a huge platform to spread very unhealthy habits and beliefs - is dangerous. Slap some disclaimers on there and let’s move on.

Hopefully this won't trigger you, because I don't mean to do that, but have you looked into keto-based supplements? They use natural sweeteners, not the lab stuff the video showcases. My mother was lifelong overweight, and after switching to heavy keto with the natural sweeteners, she dropped 130 pounds in less than half a year. She didn't even have to do anything, and she's been healthier now than ever. That's with a lot of organs being missing (botched attempt at a stomach stapling, the predecessor to the bands they do now, nearly killed her after the surgeon cut through and had to pull a bunch of her stuff + half a lung). Whenever you recover, you should look into those. I personally don't like the aftertastes, but if you're still really afraid of sugar, and need to avoid the artificial sweeteners, you should try the keto natural sweeteners instead.

I had like one packet a day, and then I ended up with digestive issues for a while and constantly having bile come up. I was miserable. In Guatemala we call that "Fresco" (fresh), which is a flavored beverage. In Mexico they are called "Aguas Fresca" which mean fresh water. It is made from fruit (like lemonade, would be consider fresco), grains like horchata, plants like Rosa Jamaica which is Hybiscous, I think. Also they can be artifitial flavor like Cool Aid, and of course sugar, honey or whatever you use to sweet your food. Fresco is between water and sodas. It's not as healthy as water, it would be ok if it's made of fruit or natural ingredients and not so much sugar; but definetely healthier than soda. It's delicious, it's nice on summer days, but it won't make you loose weight unless you drink something more sugary. Now WaterTok seems alright without the claims that it's healthy. We've had the same in America for a long time, simply called 'juice from concentrate' or similar. But it sort of fell out of vogue and other things took its place, like flavored drops you squirt into water, or the powders shown here.

The syrup bottles remind me of the smoothie pump flavors the pretzel treat place, I used to work at, as a teen, had. I vote not water. I was initially on board with people drinking more water even if it’s flavored, but then I saw the syrup and what the drinks look like they’re making. I think people are right to say they’ve gone too far and that isn’t water anymore. I still support people drinking more water. Just try not to go too far with it like these people seem to have done.

I was in a research study at our medical campus (Anschutz - in Denver Metro area) a few years ago. The study was on weight loss when comparing a water-only group vs no/low-calorie flavored water group... and the second group lost more weight (the exercise we were required to do was getting 7k steps/day). There have been other institutes that have found the same (or similar) results. (Note, this isn't bc the water flavors provided and additional benefit, but they suspect it was due to a higher level of satisfaction and perceived satiety). I love plain water, so I don't struggle with getting hydration, but at the end of the day... any water is good water. You wanna make some fancy elixir out of it? Go for it! Life is hard, and if things like this make folks happy (and get them hydrated...), I say go for it. :)

Okay, so I can explain part of this. Hi! Fellow hypothyroid sufferer (Hashimoto's). A lot of people go into trying new consumables (liquid or otherwise) without knowing whether their body is going to respond in a sensitivity/inflammatory response. They will dive right in full-force without doing a test. If you want to drink more water? Switch to ionic water. They recommend it for cancer patients because the chemo and radiation therapy dehydrates them so terribly. Now the amazing thing about ionized water is the molecules are the same shape as the cells used to absorb water so that process happens almost immediately- no bloat. I said it. No bloat. I can drink a liter of it and while I am peeing every two seconds, I am not feeling the swish swish of liquid in my tum-tum. It takes like absolute perfect NOTHING. I don't know if I am the only person who strives for this in her water, but I get overly excited when I can find it. It is also free of additives including one that as a thyroid issue sufferer, you should know about: fluoride. I swear I don't have a tinfoil hat, but if you look into it, fluoride used to be prescribed for HYPERthyroidism. If you look at the trend of thyroid issues after they started adding fluoride to public water to "help with dental health" (allowing us to consume more sugar without consequence), it is staggering- 1 in 5 women. It's in our ground soil at this point so even other things we consume have weirdly high amounts of it in them like tea and....this makes me sad...coffee unless it is sourced elsewhere (we are one of the few countries that adds so much to our public water). I am looking into filters because an entire reverse osmosis system is eye-wateringly expensive (maybe being the world's most okay-est KZitemr could allow you this kind of liberty), but the difference? Night and day. My adrenal fatigue (thank you for that hint, btw. Your story has helped me SO much on my own healing journey) has been reduced by more than half I'd say, easier time in the bathroom (I also have GI issues), fewer outbreaks of extreme skin dryness (cannot recommend Goldbond Radiance Renewal enough for this. I sent it to my Hashimoto's cousins and they are obsessed), any acne or rashes have calmed down, my headaches have improved...just give it a go. If you feel fancy, add some lemon or cucumber. Mine never last long enough to need to do that. Also, aloe water is really, really good for "luring the ol pipes," if you catch my drift. I am also a fan of coconut water powder as I am always low on potassium because colon..... Anyways, I thought since you gave me so much insight, I should return the favor and perhaps help out anyone else who bothered to read this far. Much love and all the best luck on your health journey ❤️

I guess I want to play devil's advocate here because over the past decade or so there has been a huge rise in artificial sweeteners and flavorings that are added into our food and drinks. I saw this documentary where teenagers were crying because they were so addicted to sugar and artifical sugar. They are overweight, pre-diabetic, and not getting enough exercise. TikTok is so influential to young brains, and I'm afraid that this trend is just going to promote everyone drinking a lot more sugar-water, which isn't healthy. Yeah, you're drinking more water but you're also drinking a crap ton more sugar. Artificial sugar or "sugar-free" options can be bad for your health too (even large quantities of Monk Fruit or Stevia shouldn't be consumed in a day). They can actually dehydate you more. High sugary drinks can transfer water out of your cells and increase urination over time. I think of it like a salad. Yes, a salad can be very healthy for you. But after you've added a bunch of ranch dressing, bacon bits, and croutons, the "salad" is now more unhealthy than nutritious. If you ate that type of salad three times a day, then you'd gain a bunch of weight and have high cholesterol. You can tell everyone, "But HEY - I was eating salad the whole time," but you're just kidding yourself. We're already addicted to sugar in America and this isn't helping. Why not do this with healthy soups or something? At least you'd be getting more hydration and some sort of nutrition with the broth. You would be better off just making yourself drink two glasses of water in the morning and giving yourself a sugary treat every so often. It seems impossible for Americans to establish any healthy habits without first thinking, “how can I make this taste better?” We’ve not only commercialized how you should drink water, but also what container you carry your water in. It’s WATER! It’s not a Gucci purse. 😩 What’s next? “Air Tok” where we spray air fresheners everywhere we go so we remember to breathe more?

I live in Ireland but I spent some time in Canada. It took about a month for my palate to adjust to the level of sweet that's in North American products. I cannot understate how different it is to other parts of the world and I think the reason WaterTok was mainly an American thing is because you're so conditioned to the super exaggerated flavours that water needs these additions to be palatable for you. I think it's important to point out that it's non diabetic people too. Like, diabetic folks have no other choice, but for non diabetics is possible to eat stuff with chunkier, less refined sugar (like demerara, or brown if you like the taste) and obviously adding just a teaspoon of it is enough. Fruits are nature's candy too. I fell into this rabbit hole of sugar free diets one year ago and, although I lost a lot of weight, my body didn't feel as healthy either. I was still eating too little and all the post ED issues were flaring once again, including my kidney issues that were the sole reason I started the diet to begin with.

You mentioned people's taste preferences, which is a fascinating topic I've looked into. This is something that's actually been studied; it's called taste perception. It's complex and influenced by factors like taste buds, smell, texture, and personal experiences. Non-tasters have a muted sense of taste for certain flavors, like a low volume button for bitterness in dark chocolate. Supertasters, on the other hand, have taste buds with the volume turned up high, making strong or spicy tastes overpowering. Most people fall in between these extremes. All that to say, we really, really don't know what something actually tastes like to someone else unless we ask them and even then...
@AF-mq8xb
Жыл бұрын
Isn't it fascinating? And the food companies have researched even further to establish what they call the "bliss point" for various foods. That's the levels of salt, fat and sugar needed for optimal enjoyment. They have big focus groups of various tasters to try to pinpoint the right combo.
