Hello from JEFFREYS BAY. SOUTH AFRICA We love you INDIGO ESCAPE, thank you for sharing your adventures. One plumber to another. You need to vent your drain pipes so they drain properly. It’s a few more fittings and a little more time but your flush will really flush like a flusher should. Thank. You. For sharing your story

Make certain you water your transplanted olive tree through dry periods for the next 2 years. Deep root watering is always best (more water less often) For future reference, NEVER bury a tree or woody shrub deeper than it was growing in the prior spot. Planting it deeper is good for survival is a common misconception. Arborists know better. In the next dormant season I would remove 1/3 (no more than 1/3) of the tree by pruning. The goal is to get the form of the tree into that of a native olive tree. Right now it looks like an olive shrub - and that is not good. Look for the main central leader and remove branches (starting from ground level) that are taking energy from the central leader. Ove time and multiple prunings, you should have a single stem and you should be able to walk beneath the lowest branch.

Thanks Steve and I understand your concerns but with due your respect, that's what Nuno does everyday. His shirt says Servicos Agricolas and Florestais. "Agricultural and Forestry Services". I think it's msotly because olive trees here are super easy to grow. I will have a look at pruning. That's how they prune trees for olive production. You have a massive trunk and smaller branches. They don't look that great but that's the pruning for. We want to make this tree and the ones in the inner side of the land more of a normal olive tree. The rest, along the perimeter will be prune to produce more olives (without making them look so tiny). Thanks for your recommendation.

@@TheIndigoEscape Thank you for reading my contribution. I am not questioning the gentleman's intentions. I'm simply sharing the protocol for all people who plant trees as a specialty all across the US, which includes areas of climate just like yours. There are two main issues with planting too deep. 1) Putting the bark above the root flair in contact with soil and moisture make it susceptible to rot and disease. Mother nature did not intend for that type of bark to be buried. 2) Burying the surface roots cuts off the flow of available oxygen because the fine roots that grow at the soil surface are now beneath the soil. This tree is planted, so nothing can be done. I simply wanted to help you with your own understanding of how to plant future trees on your own 😊
@TheIndigoEscape
Жыл бұрын
thank you Steve, I appreciate it. I will have a look tomorrow at the top of the bark to be expose and get a good amount of sunlight. it’s been watered very often. it doesn’t look as happy as before but that was as expected. we have been ensured that it will pick up again. I think this will be the only transplant as I’m very against moving established trees.

@@TheIndigoEscape I'm sorry I came off as a debbie downer. I want every tree to live and be happy. If you can pull some soil off the top from around the trunk that will always help. It's bound to look droopy especially at mid day with your crazy hot sun. DOn't overwater it - I would imagine it could use a good deep drink once every 4 days. Don't water just in the center, but do a circle out in the area where you think the edge of the root ball is. That will encourage the cut roots to grow. Best of luck now and in the future. I hope you plant lots of trees 😊

Just a quick note for you. Because you have such problems with water/moisture & drainage, it is best to think about laying a thick visqueen or layer plastic as a vapor barrier BEFORE you lay your concrete. It helps with the vapor barrier and your concrete will last longer. Take a look at some KZitems. SOME also lay foam layers for insulation on top of the plastic. Think about more prep for your final home foundation.

Agree with Steve's conventional wisdom and the comment about reducing the canopy so the remaining root system can better cope, BUT, I am intrigued by Nuno's experience in transplanting olives flying in the face of this. Given the dusty, dry soil and the challenging time of year, I am looking forward with interest to seeing what the future holds for this unfortunate olive tree.
@mariaeugenia7599

And maybe you should consider pruning the olive tree, so it requires less water and nutrients, because the root system must have been affected, in order to equilibrate the evaporation to the existing roots. I hope it survives. Your project is advancing rapidly!!!

It is so interesting to see how other countries do things. From the truck with the back that unloads from the side to digging up an established olive tree and re-planting it is all new to me. What a transformation for your parking area and garden area. It is all coming together. But I still can't understand why the apartment for Mother is not square but funky shape. It will be nice whatever shape it is. Having Mom living with you will be a pleasure I am sure.
@TheIndigoEscape
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! That's why I filmed the truck because I have never seen a truck like that. making the room square would have incur into taking down walls unnecessarily. It would have cost more money, more time and the walls were just taken down until a point that it needed. Taking down 55cm wide stone walls is not easy. It would have also made the room smaller.
