FDNY World Trade Center Responder Mike S., and Family Member Jeanmarie H. share their personal stories of September 11th in their 9/11 Tribute Museum presentation of We Were There on stage at the National September 11th Memorial Museum.
Jeanmarie grew up one of eight children in a "storybook family" that held indoor rainy day picnics, weekly talent shows, and everything that comes with having lots of siblings. Her brother TJ was the youngest. A worker for Cantor Fitzgerald on the upper floors of the North Tower, TJ had no hope of escape. Jeanmarie explains that his death on 9/11 not only robbed their family of him, but also joy and their family identity. She shares her favorite memories of TJ and how he lived his life, including that he loved M&Ms, was a voracious reader, gave the best hugs, and would always hold up the peace sign in photographs.
On the morning of 9/11, Mike was an off-duty firefighter. When he saw what was happening at the World Trade Center, he rushed to help put out what he knew would be the biggest fire of his career. He speaks of the helplessness he felt when witnessing people jumping from the buildings, and the disbelief and fear that swept over him when the building began to collapse. Swept up in the debris cloud, he thought for sure he was going to die and was overcome by a zen-like state of peace. He was found by first responders and taken to safety. Days later, he picked up his children at school and his daughter told him she had a dream just before 9/11 about him being a dark and painful place, but she knew he'd be okay.
