This is how Al got his start, playing rock and pop on his Accordion. He actually sounded more punk in his early days, listen to Happy Birthday, for instance. He wrote these lyrics on a weekend camping trip with Dr Demento and friends and played it live on air with the Demento crew. He had just met Jon, the drummer and asked him to bang on the accordion case. They practiced a couple of times outside then played it live (1980). Dr Demento recorded it and that recording was released as a single and put on his first album. He is around 21-22 in this clip.

I can remember when he did this on the Dr. Demento show and have been listening to him ever since. We got to see him on ''Tacky'' tour........one of the best, fun shows I have ever seen.

This is literally his first televised song. 1979. I listened to him on the Dr. Dimento radio show in the 1980's. It was great.

Oh man, this takes me back to when I was a kid and my friend Terry had this song on an audio cassette which he taped off of the original Doctor Demento radio show. It was the beginning of my lifelong love for Weird Al and his unique style of music. Thank you for sharing this video, it was such a treat to see the original performance.

He's doing a really bad Freddy Mercury impression that's hilarious in itself. So much going on, so fast!

I was an avid listener of Dr Demento living in SoCal during the late 70's into the mid-80's (until KMET went off air), and remember Weird Al's early work. His influences (some being Spike Jones, and polka of all things) were more evident early on. Some other early songs and their originals, including the mentioned My Bologna (My Sharona - The Knack)....were Ricky (Mickey - Toni Basil), and I Love Rocky Road (I Love Rock & Roll - Joan Jett). One might also not forget Yoda (Lola - The Kinks).
