The DVD audio commentary for the movie is amazing. Al researched the lives and careers of every single actor who had a part in the movie, no matter how small, so he could tell us exactly what they had done before and what they've been doing since. Then when he gets to Fran Drescher and Michael Richards he just says, "They didn't really do much after this. Kind of vanished off the face of the Earth."

Weird Al is my age. (61 now.) His first recording that got him started was "Another One Rides the Bus" which he recorded in his college dorm bathroom. (He has a degree in Architecture.) He was featured on the Dr Demento Radio show, and the rest is kind of history. That would have been 40, 41 years ago. He's a brilliant musician. His first single was My Bologna (My Sharona parody), but it wasn't a big hit, but did get airplay on a certain TV show. His first noticeable hit was Another One Rides The Bus but even that didn't crack much on the charts. His self-titled debut earned him fame with Ricky (Mickey parody) which reached 63 on the Hot 100 and became the first comedy music video to be played on MTV. However, it was his song Eat It (Beat It parody) that made him a cult classic and gave him his first number 1 hit in Australia and hitting 16 on the Hot 100. Since then, he's being releasing hits after hits.

"Eat It" was released on his second album, "In 3-D", and got a music video to promote it, so that actually was the single that got him noticed. @@lastmouseontheleft Similar but different enough to be a style parody. You can't sing Al's lyrics to Dick's Automotive in the chorus. And the talking delivery is common in a lot of songs. I'm sure Al is very careful, he has never been sued. At first he didn't list the artists for the style parodies because he thought it was a fun puzzle for fans. Then he rethought that in later albums. And different from Zepplin because it's a parody/comedy song.

Weird Al got his break on the Dr. Demento show. He had an accordian based cover called "another rides the bus" of the Queen song "Another one bites the dust". Weird Al recorded it in a bathroom with a cassette recorder.

Because MTV was blowing up at the time, his videos "Like a Surgeon" & "I Lost on Jeopardy" cemented him as not just a parody song writer, but a master visual parody artist as well.

Weird Al was on the Dr Demento Show (awesome stuff!), and this made Weird Al famous. Late 70’s. First hit was, My Bologna (My Sharona). I think the next hit was, Another One Rides The Bus (Queen, Another One Bites The Dust, from The Game, 1980)

Eat It is the video that made Weird Al a star. Everything before that were minor successes, mostly keeping him in the novelty record realm. It was also the first video that was a shot for shot parody of the original (I Love Rocky Road borrowed heavily from the original, but wasn't this exact). Plus, Beat It was a huge hit by a megastar. As for this video, others have mentioned it below, but Mark Knopfler did record the guitar track as part of the agreement. Also the name of the song is Money For Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies because that's what the lawyers told Weird Al it had to be. Finally, this video did come from Weird Al's film UHF. Do yourself a favor and watch it. I'm one of the lucky few who got to see it in theaters back in 1989, and it skewers TV, movies and music. It's a bit dated, but still really funny.

Al is a California boy. When I was a kid, I used to listen to Dr Demento on the radio. He would play off beat and bizarre songs. Weird Al would send in his cassette tapes of his songs and Dr Demento would play them. Then he became a guest on his radio show. I’m 60 years old now so that tells you how long Weird Al has been doing this.

The point people knew musicians saw it as a honor for Weird Al to cover one of they songs was in 1984 when Madonna told his agent she couldn't wait for Al to turn 'Like a virgin' in to 'Like a surgeon' The only time he took someone's suggestion and ran with it. Michael Jackson being a huge fan of his helped too, of course.

I believe the first parody that he ended up recording was “My Bologna” (parody of “My Sharona” by the Knack). He later got some more exposure with a performance of “Another One Rides the Bus” on Tom Snyder's late night TV show. But Al's first truly big hit was his parody of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” (“Eat It”).

Hi Jamel, you were asking about how Weird Al got started. I can tell you that as a person who is around the same age as Al, that when we were kids, a lot of us were forced to take piano lessons, or accordion lessons, back in the 50’s and 60’s. Why? I don’t know...lol So, as it turns out, Al took accordion lessons, and when he became an adult, he started doing stand up comedy, and he incorporated his ability to play accordion with his stand up routine. I think the first song he parodied, was My Sharona by the band called The Knack, he called it My Bologna, and he also did Another One Bites The Dust, by Queen, he called it Another One Rides The Bus. He played these songs onstage with his accordion, until one day he got discovered, and everything took off from there. I didn’t Google this information, so it might have errors, it’s just what I remember, about Weird Al the music parody genius. I’m glad you enjoy his tunes, he does whole concerts, I’m told they’re really awesome! I’d love to see him myself someday. On a sad note, Al lost both his parents on the same day, due to a faulty heater. They died in April, 2004, in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning.

"Eat It" was one of the first videos Al did (1983 along with "Ricky", "I Love Rocky Road", and"I Lost on Jeopardy") and it was the one that set the standard for video parodies and sent Al into the stratosphere. He had been doing songs since 1979's "My Bologna" but not videos. Remember, MTV didn't exist until 1981. Not only is Al's comedic timing impeccable, his timing in general is. He got in on the ground floor with music videos and he and MTV exploded into pop culture together.

UHF is a classic. Weird Al did a 30 year anniversary tour where he said that it did too well in test screenings, the studio was over confident and put it out as a summer blockbuster against the likes of Batman where is was obliterated. He also said that the part of Stanley Spadowski was between Michael Richards and Christopher Lloyd, but that Michael Richards did more physical/slap stick humor so he got the part.

The first parody Al did that got some airplay was of "Another Bites the Dust (Another on Rides the Bus)" around 1980, but he didn't really hit it big until he released parodies of Michael Jackson's "Beat it (Eat It)" and Madonna's "Like a Virgin (Like a Surgeon)", this would have been around 1984. After that he started getting constant airplay on MTV and really became a star in his own right, so much so that musicians started coming to him asking him to parody their songs. Also Michael Jackson absolutely loved his parodies and even let him use the original set and his choreographers for his parody of "Bad (Fat)"

His parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It", (Eat It) was the first real big video he did, but he gained pretty great recognition after his "Another One Rides the Bus" on Dr. Demento in the late 70's/early 80's.. I was born in '76 but remember hearing him as early as 1982

The UHF music video itself is really good too. This was the dark age of CGI back when they didn't have the visual interfaces for building the characters like they did starting in the late 90s and now. They were still using Tron-era software.

This is from Al's movie UHF. He wrote the theme song for it called UHF and he dresses up like a ton of 1980's pop stars. It's unbelievable how much he can change his looks. It's so funny when he dresses up like Prince, sticks out his tongue and dances like an idiot!!!!!!

My Bologna was the first parody that started it all. He sent a tape of it to the legendary Dr. Demento. I listened to the Dr. Demento show religiously as a kid. I wasn't even allowed to stay up late enough to listen to it so I had to keep the volume up just barely loud enough so I could hear it on my little alarm clock radio next to my bed.

His breakout video was "Eat It" (1981). Not only did Michael Jackson approve, but Eddie Van Halen (who played the guitar solo on Jackson's original "Beat It") played the solo again. In 1981 MJ was untouchable and just a few years before the monumental "Thriller" album. Al's video was played over and over and over on MTV (back when they were new and played videos) - "Eat It" made Weird Al, period, ushering in decades of success.
