I believe coke/pepsi (or just any cola) in red wine is a European thing, we do it in Romania commonly. It started off as a way to make really bad wine palatable, but now it's done with even decent or good wine. Personally, I would never mix good wine with cola - I prefer to enjoy it plain. Also, some people dilute their wine with sparkling water - I see this being a lot more common with people who are middle-aged or older, and especially diabetics - like my dad. I personally am not a fan of this practice, as very few wines actually benefit from it, in my opinion. Though, of course, I understand wanting to bulk out the amount of wine you're allowed to drink as a diabetic by just adding water, so I don't judge when I see it.
