As your Venezuelan neighbor (albeit, now residing in the U.S.A.), I’m happy to have also grown up with a part of the Amazon under our stewardship, and happy that its peoples and cultures are a major component of our identity. My family would travel along the rainforest’s edges whenever the opportunity presented itself, and what I miss most is the thick, wet, loamy smell permeating everything, and the infinite green hues which neither photographs nor video can capture. More of the world should know about our planet’s lungs … ideally, before it’s too late.

What Maya does, and what she has already achieved is amazing. The good she has done for the planet has already huge, measurable, positive impact. And this is just one person leading the change. Imagine how many new "Mayas" there are in this massive audience already, inspired by her, following her footsteps, ready to bring more sense to this often crazy unforgiving world. So thanks Maya, you are a huge positive force on this planet. We are glad that we have you, and all the other future Mayas that are sure to be inspired by you!

Hopefully everywhere and especially the US we heed more of the wisdom and knowledge of the Indigenous communities, who stewarded the land way before way before any of us made it here. There's so many lessons in permaculture, conservation, agroforestry, sustainable infrastructure and so so much more that should be common practice. Including indigenous sovereignty. Awesome and informative vid yet again!!

I appreciate this video so much! Like Maya said in the beginning, the people are often overlooked in animal conservation conversations. And I think that is not only inhumane and condescending, but also not practical. If we dismiss the wellbeing of local communities and don't address these problems systemically, there is no way for true progress to be made. If we lose sight of who actually interacts daily with the animals we as westerners claim to care so much about, the interests of local people and the far removed western animal rights activists are gonna keep clashing. The protection of human rights should be a driving force for protecting nature.

Love this video. Only issue is it's too short, but it definitely gets the point across. The indigenous people of the Amazon have an incredible history and many histories for each individual tribe. Sure it's sad that there way of life is being changed by outside societies, but as Leandro's family said it's necessary for them to adapt. I still very much appreciate those like Leandro that do what isn't easy for them to help preserve the culture. The real crime is losing the history and knowledge of these civilizations. They were likely more advanced than us when it comes to specific knowledge of plant medicine and ways of life. If all technology ceased to exist, they would be the dominant civilization on Earth within a few years. We cannot sacrifice all the hard work that the tribal people of the Americas did. As Leandro said, everyone stands tall today because of the Amazon and other powerful rainforests. All modern cities were predominately built off of Tropical rainforest resources. Much of modern medicine and food is from Tropical rainforests.
