Land raises over time due grass, weeds, trees dropping dead bits into small layers year after year. Look at sidewalks of 50+ year old homes. Sidewalk look sunk, but actually grass builds soil. Every 50 years or so dig the grade as desired. ❤❤❤.

I have built a couple of these rotators. The big one uses a 50:1 gearbox driven with a treadmill motor reduced 6:1. I use the treadmill control to vary the speed and it works great. The small one is a small Dayton right angle gearbox driven by a motor used on old sewing machines. I use a light dimmer and a sewing machine foot pedal to control the speed. On both I use a braided battery ground cable wrapped around the chuck drive shaft to transfer welding current. I usually use a TIG welder to build up a shaft, so I control the heat with the left foot and speed with the right foot. If my coordination is up to par, I have pretty good luck building up shafts. I like your machine shop videos, and also find the oilfield stuff interesting as well. Keep on keepin; on!

Buy some "flexible grounding braid" from McMaster-Carr and wrap it 180 around the shaft. Use multiple pieces for high amps. It is the same stuff used for old school automotive ground straps.

Absolutely the concrete slab can sink in time depending on the soil. It can also shift horizontally and continuously open up a gap between two concrete slabs that were not doweled together when the addition was poured. I know as I have seen it and also happening to me.

One problem you may have with the grounding connection as built is some of the welding current will pass thru the pillow block bearings. This can lead to arcing which chowders the balls and bearing races.

A common cutting oil used for old machinery is the high sulfur oil which protects machine tools MUCH better than water soluble coolant. It's no contest. However any oil that flows decently will do since cutting oil is for COOLING blade teeth not so much lubrication. You've been around more than long enough to guess accurately what works. A manual or powered rollout wheel/welding lathe is common in the oil patch. Powered welding rotators for bevelling pipes are commercially available that work like what you built. If you take an old steady rest and make a mount you can attach that to a stand (or some pipe held in a tristand built or bought) to rotate pieces of any length you like. Your rig welder buds will have cool examples to copy if you want a portable version with adjustable angle. Of course a rest will make shaft buildup by welding go slick and easy. You can mount a cutting torch on a removable arm if you want to bevel pipe with that machine. No requirement for a straight torch if ya make a holder, and that also applies to plasma torches.

one of those spring loaded ground clamps could also mount on the shaft and allow it to turn, if you need less resistance in the connections you can use a tig welder to braze copper or brass onto the steel shaft

"Here's what I am thinking' It's nice and ugly" That's beautiful right there! Take about two feet of welding lead, strip the insulation off and wrap it around that shaft and tie it back into the rest of the cable. for your ground conductor. Kinda poor man slip ring.

You may end up having your rotation motor acting as a ground for your welder if your slip rings fail to conduct. Welder should be an isolated circuit but as things get older , well you know.

Water soluble oil will not freeze if you add antifreeze to it. Just make up the antifreeze in the concentration needed for your climate and then dilute the coolant as per the instructions. It works, i have done this for years.

I don't think the concrete slabs sink as much as the dirt and debris outside the buildings grow or build up. I've had grass and sod seem to grow up the backside of my old barn. Then the rain seems to more easily flow in.
@corydriver7634

I believe the same, buildings sink over time. I’ve seen so many old buildings like yours where the surrounding grade is higher than the slab-you can’t tell me that was intentional, doesn’t make sense to build below or on grade.
