Reminds me of the western end of Platform 4 at Reading back in the heyday of the 52s. Used to come up on a Tadpole and spend whole Saturdays there sometimes :)

Nice shot there, re want to go behind them, try pathfinder they are running probably 2 or 3 trips with good old D1015. One's to Buxton in March/April and they are very enjoyable trips.I'll never forget the Cornishman - my first trip behind a whizzo on the main line. What a sound........

Westerns also hauled standard blue-grey MkIIs as well, although they could not operate the air conditioning of the later D/E/F series of MkIIs.

@mattyorton1 There were still Hawksworth GWR designed bow ended coaches used as well- I saw them the last time in 1971- painted crimson lake along with the Mark 1 stock . I do not remember seeing any painted in blue and grey although some may have been painted up in the new livery.

Hi mattyorton1 Westerns & Warships would have been seen pulling mk1 maroon coaches in the 60's in the southwest and on the blue & white standard BR mk1's after that. I have one or two photo's on my web site if you want to see - search on google for railphotoanthology - its a site on weebly. Cheers

If they are Maybach engines then that's the same German firm that made the engines for the Panzer Mark VI Tiger tanks of WW2..I'm not saying they're the same engines just the same firm..Hitler commissioned Porsche&Maybach to produce the Tiger engines I think, but the Porsche prototype failed and Hitler awarded the contract to Maybach..

The Maybach-MD-series emerged in 1949 as a new generation of multi role, medium size and high performance diesel engines, including the MD 655s working inside Western Class units licensed build by Bristol Siddeley. They basically combine key design principles of the mentioned HL-tank engines and the well established 1930s G-series, which was used for railcars and later became popular as power plants of well known german shunters named V 60. I'm not sure about your intention linking these engines straight to Hitler. Many british people today enjoy their Mercedes or BMW cars, and these are the same firms having made DB 605 and BMW 801-engines for german fighterplanes in WW II...
