Play designs, script designs, blocking schemes and of course the art of Quarterbacking. My question: As a QB, what plays are you comfortable with in 3rd & 10+ when we have to have that first down? Also, some good 1st down Rhythm throws to start a game with? Keep up the great work!!

I love reading books and articles by Bill Walsh. When talking about his system, he said that if you ran for four yards, the defense felt they were getting dominated, but if they held you to a 4 yard pass, then they were dominating you... yet they are giving up 4 yards either way. Walsh also wrote about how the drop back pass was used to control the game while play action was used to score. Steve Young and Bret Favre had a sit down, which is a great video to watch in and of itself, where Steve mentioned how Bret was doing things with "my offense" (read Steve's offense) that he had been coached not to do or that was impossible and how watchign Bret made Steve a better QB later in his career. Steve also said that the problem he had with the west coast scheme was that, if you played as you were coached, it was a great way to get into FG range and kick it, but did not really have a plan to score.

Tom Landry was one of the first coaches to get into precise rhythm/timing routes. My understanding is that he used videos in conjunction with early computers to look at strides and count steps of his players and key defenders so that he could predict/plan timing based schemes.

Yeah, but they played a different style of football back then. It wasn't about passing stats, completion percentage crap, and even interceptions which have turned into PROTECTION FOOTBALL. PROTECT YOUR STATS, PROTECT YOUR JOB AND WINNING Super Bowls!!! QB's and teams back then used to go through their progressions and run the ball and when it came to passing, they looked deep first and were not afraid to launch it, and then go through the progressions. The goal was to WIN THE FREAKING GAME, not have great looking stats that get QB's paid and elevated even when they lose important games. QB's get paid today based on stats and not unique skill sets or true balling. They need everything around them or they ...lose. I think analysts should throw out all the stats against bad to average teams and focus on what goes on against top teams...WHICH IS THE PATH TO THE SUPER BOWL AND THE ONLY PATH THAT TRULY COUNTS. The NFL QB's are frauds today as compared to the gunslingers of yesterday. I mean go back and check the "stats" back then. I think Elway had over 10 interceptions every season and his completion percentage was 47.5% to 63%. He only had one barely 4000 yard season!! He basically had a low 50% completion percentage!!!!! He would have been benched by todays terms and called inaccurate. The West Coast scheme has destroyed the QB position and turned them into role players who are grossly overpaid. Where RB's need to be WR, and TE's need to be WR's etc. smh.

Hey JT. Why is the patriots defense as good as it is (ignoring the belichick factor) when they don't have an elite pass rusher? It seems that every other elite defense in the NFL places so much emphasis on the pass rush (eagles, bears, cowboys,) except for the patriots. Instead they seem to put emphasis on run defense with players such as Lawrence Guy and Kyle Van Noy.

Patriots ran the Ehrhardt-Perkins with a possession focus for some years. So it seems like the digit systems have incorporated much of what WCO's used to be philosophically. Also you have some WCO coaches like McVay who like to stretch the field vertically. If I had to guess how the next decade goes in the NFL with these systems, I would assume the WCO (which has to be dominant right now though I'm too lazy to count the coaches) ends up going away due to its overcomplicated terminology vs EP or the Coryell approach. I would be curious to hear your opinion on that and whether you agree.

Hey JT! I love your work and miss the long-form analysis on Patreon. This stuff is great too, so thank you. I have a question regarding dropback footwork. Not including RPOs or P/A, are dropback steps always tied to the first route read on a play? This was the way I was taught, and that you add a hitch step every time you move through your progressions. The reason I ask is that I’ve seen some funky stuff from some QBs, especially Mahomes. I often can’t tell if his dropback is actually tied to a route, or if he’s just sorta dropping back however he feels (kinda like old school QBs). Any insight into philosophies and merits of different dropback systems is appreciated. Thanks!

How often would you say options are built into a route? Bill walsh developed the offense in Cincinnatti to deal with a poor offensive line and no running game....the played in the rugged AFC Central, who had the Steel curtain and the Oilers front 7. Walsh had to use the short passing game to move the ball and keep possession and that actually squeezed the most out of that Bengals offense which had Charlie Joiner and Issaac Curtis (SDSU)- Air Coryell and Gillman really ran the WEST COAST OFFENSE....The medias mislabeled Walsh's offense the west coast offense, and we lost the truth per se.....Air Coryell, and Gillman prior (Coryell was at SDSU while Gillman was also the coach of the chargers) were to fathers of the modern day passing game..that is not arguable

A lot of people call Andy Reid's offensive scheme a adaptation of a West coast system. After watching film, would you still say that's true?
@12jswilson
5 жыл бұрын
I'd say it's now a hybrid offense of several offensive systems. It's language and backbone is still West coast, but it has elements of almost every modern scheme. During the latter Alex Smith years, there was definitely more spread concepts in there and with Mahomes, there's a ton of Air Raid concepts built in. That's one of the reasons it's been incredibly difficult to stop is it just morphs into whatever your defense has trouble with. You want to run Seattle cover 3? That's cool. Mahomes and company are going to shred you with air raid 4 verts and wheel routes. Tampa 2? Get ready for the classic West coast flood concepts. ZBS? Yeah, no. Mahomes gets through his reads to quickly for that one. Zimmer double a gap? Ask the Raiders how that one worked out for them. The only thing that really slows them down is extremely good man coverage and they have the weapons to beat it with their speed, motion, and bunch formations.

God I hated playing in Digit Systems, they always thrned out so fucking verbose and coaches would just go on and create plays in game and thus threw off rythym and timing for us on field. When we were running concepts we would still adapt routes to coverage and had clear reads and progressions. And all of a sudden we were putting up 40 Burgers a game and went 19 - 0 over two seasons with 2 championships.
