In general, people have lost social decorum...lost the ability to restrain their feelings and react rationally. But, also we as a society don't feel heard... and so jump into conversation with others without thinking about or constructing a response that won't come off sounding snarky or misinterpreted. Sadly, with all the social media we have access to, we can't communicate effectively anymore. The lack of a real person in front of us to talk to is gone: the human connection. Partaking in online discourse is not the same as speaking in person. Context is lost, we can't read body language, the wisdom to wait...and think before speaking, etc. All of these no longer exist. We feel more isolated than ever.

Thanks hickok been watching for years. I’m glad you’ve opened this box so people can hear it from their favorite KZitemr. I’m 33 yrs old. No social media except watching you. I just turned my phone service off permanently. The peace you get without the spam calls is worth it alone. Also gives you a chance to reconnect with people (other humans) in a different way as you are forced to be more social without that line of communication. We can all be social without social media and cell phones. Period. Bet there would be a lot less hate if we socialized in person.

The way I've explained it goes like this. Some people's lives are so miserable that the only thing that makes them feel any happiness, or have any value in life. Is trying to tear someone down, or make them feel as miserable as they are. That's their only source of gratification.

Summertime you were kicked out at dawn and told not to come home til the streetlights came on. You wanted to learn something, you went to the library and checked out actual BOOKS. Before the internet, I used to turn out a club newsletter. 400 members. The cost for envelope, stamp, and photocopies was just over $1 each. So the monthly newsletter was $400 to reach 400 people. Imagine today that someone having to mail out 3 million newsletters costs $3,000,000. Nowadays, an individual can reach several million people at a low, low cost via the internet. The problem is that it can be totally false information, with zero oversight by an editor or fact checker. Somehow, someway, internet content creators have to be held accountable for bad information that harms the innocent.

Other than KZitem I don't have anything to do with social media. My sister talked me into getting a Facebook account a few years ago. I signed up, didn't do anything else and by the next morning Facebook had sent me a whole bunch of names of people who I might want to be friends with, or something like that. Funny thing is everyone they had suggested, I knew, or used to know. Some of the people went back to my early childhood. People I hadn't had any contact with in over fifty years. How could Facebook possibly know all of that. It scared me. I wanted to unsubscribe immediately, but found out it's much harder to get out than it was to sign up. After four days I finally figured out how to get unsubscribed. That wasn't enough, Facebook was sending me messages of "dire consequences" if I didn't reactivate the account. I never did, and anything bad never happened. I'll never sign up for anything on the internet again.

Yes, sir. Totally feel what you're saying. Studies have shown that Likes and shares trigger pleasure centers in our brains, pushing us to seek out validation on the social web. People who aren't usually heard have a massive platform, but their character may not match their influence, which can add to the problem rather than solve it. And if the operators of these platforms build their own biases into algorithms, everyone gets swept up in it. This can manipulate not just individual behavior but shape society's collective beliefs, amplifying divisive voices and distorting public opinion.

One reason why I don't usually read comments on gun channels is because the insane personal attacks. Some channels are worse than others. Almost without fail, if somebody makes even the mildest comment, like "I'm not a fan of Glock" or "Glock is the best" or "I like my Beretta 92".... within about 3 responses, the topic responses have moved to calling each others Mom a Ho. Crazy.
