If anyone harms me or takes what is rightfully mine, and doesn't repent and try to make it right ("sorry has two parts - first you say it, then you make it right"), I pray for the person's salvation, lighting candles at church and having Masses said for his or her intentions. Praying for someone's intentions means praying for what is truly good for that person, especially salvation. It's not asking God to give them what they're asking for, but what is truly good for their souls.

What a revelation about forgiveness! I have never considered the view that, without repentance, we are not required to forgive...even though we MUST be willing to forgive. This makes sense, and the fact that we are not trying to be more forgiving than God, which cannot and should never be expected. Thanks Jimmy. God bless you and everyone reading this.

The Christian idea is that if we trust and love God, and put Him at the centre of our life, we can practically be willing to do all things He wants us to do, because we wouldn't feel "losing out" to anything or anyone, because God is always there backing us up, and He is stronger than everyone and ALL things. We sin is because we fear for ourselves. We have no sense of security. People hurt us, we sulk and get angry because we feel detrimented. A person who has 100% trust in God in an intimate relationship with Him will never think he can really be detrimented. Christian virtue is the manifestation of God Himself.

If love is to will the good of the other, then we have to know what the good is first before we can love. THAT is what has been missing from all the modern "love" talk that is not really love. To know what is good we must obey legit authority/revelation about moral issues (reason ideally helps but is double-edged). And we must exercise prudence to make sure we are actually achieving the good we seek.

Love means willing the good of the other. The highest good anyone can have is to come closer to God. So coming closer to God is what we should pray for, for all people on our prayer list. We should even pray that our enemies come closer to God. This is the best prayer we could pray for them.

Hi Jimmy. Thanks for doing this video. I have shared your article on the limits of forgiveness many times. Glad to see it summarized here. You have just throw in a curve ball on conditional love vs unconditional love. The definition being that love is not an emotion but “willing the good of someone”, meaning we want them to go to heaven. But, can you explain more about the differences in loving fellow Christians vs everyone else?

On "Love and Forgiveness": justice and proper punishment (emphasis on PROPER punishment) is an objective good, and since it is an objective good, it is good for all parties involved. Therefore, seeking proper punishment for a crime is good, even for the criminal. This is important because if someone has done you a grave wrong that would warrant legal punishment, forgiving them does NOT necessarily you don't seek justice and legal punishment for the offense. You can forgive someone and love them, but still reasonably press charges against them.

I joined a prayer group two weeks ago and we just had our second meeting tonight. Into The Deep with Dan Burke, and this subject is what we were talking about with a greater emphasis on our relationship with Jesus specifically. The section from Matthew though, on not praying as the pagans do, was absolutely part of the discussion. Since I had a personal experience with Jesus it’s almost ridiculous how relative things have been I each other. Jesus be praised.
@AbsurdScandal
6 күн бұрын
"How relative things have been I each other?" Could you clarify what you meant by that?
@brandonbreaux1296
6 күн бұрын
@@AbsurdScandal That’s a mistake on my part. Shouldn’t have been up so late. What I meant was *how relative things have been to each other*, you likely knew that though so I’ll clarify further. Well, it’s been a relatively small through line, to me though it’s been hard to ignore. For the past two weeks I had been attempting to read once a day (and for the most part I had been doing so, slipping up for the storm) and during that time every reading I had where I wasn’t focusing too much on the method (an issue I was concerned of but didn’t know I had in such severity) I would come to a passage that spoke to me in my current place. What is still with me is the parable of the barren fig tree. How we must turn from our sin or die, but even if we aren’t bearing good fruit He is tending to us. And this meeting when we separated to read from the Bible one verse that was suggested was John 14 or 15. I got to 15 and wouldn’t you know it that was when Jesus told His disciples that He was the vine. A lot of plant imagery, but more importantly an emphasis on how we need Him; not out of a tit-for-tat sort of way, but that He wants us to be with Him. Further still I was also reading a few passages before the current meaning on idolatry, and at the time I wasn’t seeing why. This meeting though (especially after hearing Matthew) I put two and two together. I do have my faults of idolatry outside of my prayer life, but I wasn’t being mindful not to make an idol of HOW I was praying. If that makes any sense. This is pretty new and exciting for me and don’t want that feeling to jumble up what I’m actually intending to get across. I suppose the take away is a sincere expression of gratitude for Mister Akin today and previous and pretty much everything else that helped me get to this point. And obviously a testament of praise for how amazing (and somewhat funny) our Lord God can be.

Jimmy, I found this so helpful. I'm going to give it a second listen. I have one comment/ question about forgiveness. I'm thankful that you explained that forgiveness has nothing to do with emotions; the same is true with love. Do you agree with the idea that we should forgive someone even if they aren't sorry, for our benefit. Does forgiveness of someone who only wishes us ill confer any psychological and/or spiritual benefit?

Forgiveness can be complex. I would say there are different levels to forgiveness. Also I believe it is important to differentiate forgiveness from reconciliation. One form is as Jimmy stated. You did something to me, or took something from me creating a debt to me. If you truly are sorry and seek forgiveness, OK we must forgive. The debt is cleared. It is also possible to reconcile the relationship. Another form is to forgive regardless of the other person being sorry or not. In this instance, you took something from me, but feel no remorse and are not sorry. I can forgive you, recognizing that you are a flawed human prone to sin. I release you from the debt you owe me. I will never get the debt repaid so why hold onto it? Mercy and compassion are uniquely Christian, and if we wait for the other person to feel guilty we are vulnerable to allowing that wound in us to not heal. Additionally, many times, an act of mercy or forgiveness will melt the hard heart of someone that may have hurt you and defensively does not feel sorry, and spark remorse in their heart. I will pray for you that you can become better in the future, and heal from whatever made you feel injuring me was ok. I can forgive you, and release the debt but in this instance reconciliation is most probably not possible. Forgive 7 plus 77 times is a bold and radical statement. It dares us to take the lead in forgiving when no one else wants to take the first step.
