Good vid. pit passes, entry fees and sanction fees really add up over the year. As a former midget team co-owner the first thing you learn is that buying the racecar is the cheapest part of the deal. In addition to the car and spare parts you need a place and a whole set of tools to work on it, a trailer to tow it, a rig big enough to tow it and the crew and tools to work on it at the track and, of course, fuel for the rig and maintenance on the tow rig as needed. If you have a day job, like we did, sometimes we needed to take time off without pay to go racing. Was it worth it? Hell Yeah! Did we make money? Hell No!

Who would have thought this would be cheaper than motorcycle racing.... jeeeez...... that's awesome! big bikes are 18k new now, you can get used for about 9k, plus 500 bucks for tires each day or sometimes twice a day. 10 gallons of fuel should get you through the weekend. Track prices are 200-300 a day. Transponders are about 500, crash fairings are about 1k, exhaust and tune to be competitive about 2k. 3k for suspension, Gear is about 2k average.... so to get into Motorcycles lets call it 12-14k average for liter bikes maybe 8-10k for 600 class.

The costs of racing is why one definitely needs sponsors. I helped my nephew race a Pure 4 asphalt car about six or seven years ago. @@daleolson3506 it wasnt good in terms of car count. The odd thing is the payout wasn't too bad for those guys. Iirc it was $500 or $1000. Pretty good odds to win

You forgot the "purse" variable. What's it pay for each position from 1st to 5th?
@AJBunch6
Жыл бұрын
That all depends on the track or series you race with. Up here it could be $350 to win all the way up to $5k to win on our big race night.

How often do frames get bent? What does a hard crash where the front end hits a wall at a 45 deg. angle cost to repair assuming the frame isn't bent but all the suspension has to be replaced?
@AJBunch6
Жыл бұрын
That really depends on how often you wreck. If you take it to someone to do the clip you are looking at around $500-750 per clip after parts and labor. A lot of the suspension parts you can get in package deals that save you money as well. If you were to knock the whole front end off which rarely happens where you can’t salvage one side of the car you are looking at around 1-3k depending on if you buy all new stuff or get used deals.

@@AJBunch6 Thanks man. This is so tempting but our local 1/3 mi. clay track gets so rutted up on race day I don't think my ol' body could handle the abuse.

Do costs change much for different tracks like [road race, autocross, dirt, asphalt], in your experience/hearing? I'm an engineer in metro Detroit and eager for the challenge of setting a car up for those different types of tracks, but wary of expenses, lack of variety, etc. Two races a year at Waterford Hills would be THE DREAM, for example This is so helpful, AJ, thank you for making time to explain!

I haven’t heard much of a difference between the different disciplines. With these being spec parts it’s not like the dirt stuff cost more then the asphalt stuff in my opinion.

If you want to get started you should go to your local track and talk to some of the drivers. They will be able to help guide you in the direction of cars for sale.

I think so. You can get a 17-18” seat in these. It may be a little snug but if you went to your local track and asked to sit in one you may get a better idea.

Great informative video. Really good breakdown and perfect for me to plan ahead as I'm starting to get big into karts and looking at national events and next steps. Great thumbnail too, that's what really got me here!

Any suggestions for sedan spring rates for road courses?

I’m not super familiar with the road course stuff but I would assume you would want a balanced setup to help stabilize cornering weights turning both left and right.

I know a guy who won the lottery and bought a $200,000 drag car and close to another million on the hauler. He travels the country drag racing, sightseeing and pissing cash.

If you got a big boy chassis it gives you a little bit more room. You could probably fit but I would go to your local track and ask someone if you could sit in their car first.

Racing is gone with the wind. No money in it, if you want a trophy go buy it at flea market.
