In part 5 of our series on abortion, Dr. Shabir Ally explores the hadith that is frequently referred to in debates about abortion. He says the hadith is problematic on 3 fronts: 1) it is theologically problematic, as it indicates that the final outcome of a person is prescribed before birth, 2) it suggests that the embryo is in a liquid state for 40 days, which conflicts with what we know scientifically, and 3) it conflicts with other authentic hadiths describing the formation of the fetus.
