My everyday carry camera is one of my 35mm film cameras. I consider them to be my visual journal. I rotate through my collection. I almost always have one with me when I’m out and about. One small prime lens, no bag, just me and my camera.

Nice, how much do you tend to shoot?

@@RickBebbington I average just under 2 rolls a week, most of it 135, with a little 120 added in. I do my own processing and scanning. I have a small darkroom in our basement. I love the 135 format for this everyday visual journal of life kind of photography. I don’t need to be so precious with each exposure. Although truth be told, I don’t tend to be terribly precious with my 120 exposures either, since all my medium format cameras are old manual-everything folders.

I'm so with you on this. I have a kind of >two< camera situation. My ALWAYS in my pocket is my Ricoh GRiiiX. My "I'm going out to shoot" camera is a Fujifilm X-T5 (and then the Ricoh stays in the pocket). Sorry about your corrupted memory card. I feel like you do about phones not quite being the right EDC. Plus, one reason I use the camera is to take my hands off the phone. To be intentional about that. It's like a meditation.

Yeah, absolutely. A phone just doesn’t get me in the ‘zone’. Nice setup 👍🏻

Fun really is the most important factor for me! The F in my X100F stands for fun (to me at least). But I agree with you that I don’t end up carrying it around as often as I’d like because of the size, so am looking at small bags that I can stash it in alongside keys, wallet, and phone. Maybe that’s something you can cover next? Everyday camera bags!

But it shouldn't be in a bag 😂 that's a good idea actually, thanks! Although finding a bag that ticks all boxes is harder than finding a camera that does....!

Nicely done Rick and some great points … I still love my Nikon Zf for everyday shooting it’s got everything I need video and low light performance and great ibis but most importantly as you so adeptly describe… it just feels great in my hands ! Love the video keep it up mate ! BEST Art

Bloomin' memory cards! Great video, Rick, thanks. I more often than not have my ZV-E10 with kit lens in my pocket when out, plus a spare battery (tiny battery) for just in case... If I've planned to take piccies, the A6700 and 18-105mm is pretty much my goto, although the camera bag is in the car, so a bigger choice of lenses are there if I want to be adventurous!

My “real” camera is a Canon R5 with various (expensive) pieces of glass. But I also felt the need for an “everyday” camera, so I got a Fujifilm X-T30 ii with a cheap lens (25 mm f/1.8 manual focus). But the next thing I knew, with all the incredible options of that camera, and the surprising quality of a “cheap” lens, along with the Fuji film simulations, I realized that I’ll now probably only use the Canon for serious landscape work. But what’s weird is that an everyday camera suddenly feels anything but. Yet it’s small enough to fit in a pocket, at least with a 23 or 35 mm lens.

I know the feeling!! I've found that the X100 actually get's a lot more use than I'd ever have thought. Sounds like you're having fun with your kit anyway!

I've always leaned towards features that aren't really favourable to EDC. Things like top mounted EVF and large hand grip. But recently I have been looking for something for travel that will be close to pocketable (coat pocketable?). I also want EDC. I was looking at the Sony A6xxx series, but having owned 3 of that series, and as you mentioned, while they are technically brilliant little cameras, they aren't inspiring in a way that makes you want to take it everywhere. My Fuji camera, however, is. Problem is that it is an X-H1, so while it meets all the other criteria you mentioned, portability isn't one, and it's a key one. Having owned an X-T1, I loved how the old xtrans-ii sensor rendered images. I heard the xtrans-i was even better and is the GOAT as far as Fuji sensors are concerned. I ended up scoring an absolute mint X-E1. It is missing all the features you listed with your X-100V, along with 1 or 2 more. So we will see if it was a good choice. The problem I am struggling with is one other thing you mentioned, which is not being worried about actually using it. It is so pristine that I am positive it is NOS. I got it from a shop in Japan, and it came in the original box with matching serial numbers, and it has absolutely zero indication of ever being used. It feels too good to use and get dinged or scratched. I will use it carefully to make sure it doesn’t miss the points you listed too badly, but if it does, I will pass it on to someone who will appreciate it's condition as much as I do. And next time I get a used camera, I will try to get something in more gently loved condition. I know that sounds crazy, but seeing this 12 year old camera in new condition has just freaked me out a bit!!! Great video. Really got me thinking. Thanks!

I know what you mean actually!! I picked up an old Canon AE1 film camera the other week and it's in unbelievably good condition, especially given that it's 40 years old. I'm terrified to use it! Condition aside, it sounds like a good solution, good luck with it!

Great video clearly explained and interesting to watch as always. I think I see things a bit different to you Rick? I see where you are coming from but I’d find it really difficult to have a “proper” camera in me all the time. I did try a Ricoh but found it little different to my iPhone in terms of operation and results. I divide my photography into two: creative purposeful activity and documenting my life. For me, the iPhone as my everyday carry produces good enough photos to document my life. I sort of do what you do with my OM system: my OM1 with pro lenses are in my camera bag and I take them out to photograph … when I’m out walking and that’s the main reason I’m out the. I have an OM5 with light F4 zoom to take photos “while I’M walking”

Yeah, I get that. I think I just miss not having a 'proper camera' with me when I leave it at home (which, despite what I say, sometimes I do!!). Maybe one day I'll warm to using an iPhone, but not yet!!

@@RickBebbington thanks for taking the time to respond Rick. For a serious photographer, I think your plan is a good one. I’m not really a serious photographer … it’s definitely a hobby and I take photos for myself and to share with friends and family on social media. Now and again, I pack my bag with some serious kit and am a bit more purposeful about being creative

I’ve never been someone who has an everyday camera. It’s just not me. When I want to take photos I’ll go out with the intention of doing so, sometimes with a small camera, sometimes with a larger one. The question I’ve always asked myself is whether the concept of an everyday camera actually reduces the number of times people use their other expensive camera(s)? I can see why that might not be the case for someone who makes all/most of their living from photography but do you or anyone else here have experience of this?
@RickBebbington

You're probably right. My proper camera definitely gets less use as a result, but overall I'm taking more images so it's an overall net positive I think. I guess that doing what I do I can justify it, but that might not be the case for everyone.

My everyday camera depends on what I am doing, I have very portable p&s cameras, some with zooms, that can fit in a pocket, but given most of us carry a wallet, phone, keys, camera, I tend to have to have a very small bag. I don't worry how many MP the camera is, but I just want something that is fun. My Pentax MX-1, Pentax Q with the 35mm and zoom lens, could fit in any cargo pocket. Never owned a GR, but can imagine they would be perfect for a pocket cam. Thanks for sharing!

For me it is the Sony RX100V. For analog it would be a Werra. I just sold my Canon 6DII because it became to heavy. I bought a Sony a6600 instead.
