My main problems with that proposed solution is 1) having Lewis and Saint-Maximin on the same flank, ASM has no defensive inclination and Lewis doesn’t appear solid enough to be left to go about it on his own (which I think is acknowledged by SB when playing Hendrick on the opposite as it frees up one of the other cms to help him out), plus I’d rather asm in the right, he’s too erratic with his shots, but he’s great at getting to the line and driving the ball across the box. Second problem, as good as Shelvey can be, I’m continually disappointed by his performances, unless he’s in a midfield 3, he always look too tired. I’m a much bigger fan of seeing S.Longstaff and Hayden, just for the engine that they provide in the midfield.

Surely the point is you play the 5 against the better teams and the 4 against lesser teams? It might make the general trend of XG look low but leagues are measured in points not XG. In the games you're looking to get goals go with the 4 then you have a more positive XG for that game than in say the game cited in this piece against Chelsea. The way Bruce has adapted his style against different opponents is probably why their league position and the XG stats are so out of sync as they also were last season.

Newcastle can't graduate from 5 at the back with Bruce in charge. Bruce uses the last managers tactics (in this case Rafas 5 defenders), and pushes for a cup run, then flounders in the league as a result of this, and then gets fired. Rafas 5 defenders needed Ayoze/Rondon to hold the ball up and bring others into play, then Ritchies work rate to support/run everyone back when we inevitably lose the ball. Without decent hold up play, or Ritchies work rate, 5 at the back will and does look cardboard. Joelinton/Maximin holding it up with Almirons work rate is a version, but since Bruce is copying, he doesn't have th managerial nous to mix it up (if even very slightly) like Rafa did. Or even coach them for this properly. Asking Bruce to change formation will lead to another Hayden on the touchline saying "we don't know what we're doing". That's the problem, not the squad, the players, the fan base. A shite manager, backed by a chairman that wants to tread water, copying Rafa. Like Sports direct copying an actual brand, but needing to work workers to death to get any actual profit.

Since this video came out they beat West Brom and lost to Leeds with a 4-4-2. The Leeds game ended badly, I think partly due to the illness in the squad as guys at the end of the game looked exhausted. My fear is that the bad memory of this will scare Bruce back into the 5 at the back dirge. With 4-4-2 they'll lose more games, but they'll win more too, and wins are very precious in the bottom half of the table. In fact, he will play 5 at the back through fear of the best teams, lose 1-0 and be content that he avoided a hammering. You'll never be a winner if you're frightened of losing.

Steve bruce is right to be playing defensively and in a conservative way just like his predecessor Rafa. Newcastle doesn't have the laportes and the edersons or the van djiks to push the ball forward safely and accurately. Our beloved analyst conveniently ommits talking about these two crucial positions in modern football without which neither city nor Liverpool would have seen the success they have. And bruce knows that. He is very aware of the limitations his backline has. Thus he is trying to hide that issue by playing in a far more conservative way. I would do the same. Every team without the budgets of the bigs would do the same. Leicester did the same to win the championship. Difference is when they needed a little bit of extra they had it in the face of mahrez vardy and kante running all over.

I love the channel, but this video was awful. Firstly, it doesn’t answer the question in the title. Summary: if you remove a defensive player, it allows you to be more attacking. That’s the whole video. He says early on, essentially, this is an attacking formation Newcastle played, they got some bad results, so Steve Bruce changed it to become more defensive. Yep. Sounds like football management to me. Manager sees deficiency in preferred system, reverts to simpler system while deficiencies can be coached away in original system. This entire video is predicated on the assumption that defending is bad, attacking is good, and anything that shifts away from the latter towards the former, for any reason, is a mistake. It also gives no context to these formations Newcastle played. They show the defensive formation played against Chelsea, highlighting Joelinton up front by himself, and we played 2 ball winning central midfielders, ignoring the fact that Wilson and Shelvey were injured or not fully fit. Would he have preferred Bruce play an attacking formation with 2 of our most effective attacking players unavailable against a team with hundreds of millions of pounds of attacking talent? That doesn’t make sense. This video just panders to the narrative that Steve Bruce is an idiot, and a bad football manager who would love to play a 10-0-0 formation. I expect more from Tifo.

To paint 3421/541 as just a defensive formation is lazy RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Dortmund all play it under Nagelsmann, Gasperini, Favre and are consistently among the highest scoring teams in Europe, you can play good football with 3 centre backs. When Rafa Benitez signed Almiron in his last January to play alongside Rondon, Perez in a 3421 with Schar and Lejeune as footballing centre backs in a back 3 Newcastle transitioned into a good attacking team, only 3 teams scored more goals from January to May in Rafa’s 3421 formation. Newcastle had 90 shots in the first 5 games from January when Rafa played the 3 amigos Almiron-Rondon-Perez together no PL team had more shots than that. The formations and players aren’t the problem Bruce is.

Thing is they could easily play an exciting 3 at the back formation, if they wanted to, Fernandez, Schar and Lascelles could be a good back 3, Manquillo could easily be converted like Azpi was for Chelsea. Then play wingers/Wing backs based on the opponent, going with Lewis and Krafth if they wanted to be more defensive and playing the likes of Ritchie or Fraser if they want more attacking threat out wide, Hayden could easily play as a single Pivot role or Shelvey if you want more of a deep-lying playmaker, then again the 2 in front could depend on the opposition and who's the Pivot and playing wide, maybe going more industrious if Shelvey is deep with Hendrick and either of the Longstaff brothers, or if Hayden plays you could play a more creative 2 of Shelvey, Almiron or even convert ASM to do that role and have more freedom, then they could play a plethora of striking options with their choices, 2 target men in Carroll and Joelinton, 2 very good poachers in Gayle and Wilson and the more creative and technical players like Fraser, Almiron and ASM, but they just play this dull, defensive football. Quite sad with some of the potential talent they have.

My main issue with Bruce is that when we do play this "comfort blanket" 5 at the back we're as poor defensively as we are with 4 at the back, except now our attack has been made more impotent so we just add to problems instead of fixing existing ones

Great analysis again Alex. I've thought for a while that Newcastle could play shelvey in the middle of a back 3, to allow him more time on the ball to pick out passes, similarly to Coady.

How can you not mention that despite being defensive we still have faced the most shots against us in the top leagues in Europe this season? If it wasn't for darlow being a lot better then expected then we would be easy in the bottom 3 I get that Bruce is a defensive manager but he's useless at it

I would prefer Almiron right behind Wilson.

Completing 1/5 passes forward given they are putside their own third is utterly terrible
