I heard one of the main reasons disease was so devastating was due to famine. While the Spaniards did have immunities pass down both genetically and through their mother's milk (you get some of your mom's antibodies), the Aztecs didn't starting see the massive losses to diseases until starvation set in.
@Andy_Babb
Жыл бұрын
I suppose famine would certainly lower any persons immunity, and then combine that with have no pre-existing antibodies from having never been exposed and it was kind of a perfect recipe for genocide. Heartbreaking to think that 90% or more of all of the natives of both continents were wiped out over generations and others sold into slavery.

you forgot the main force in the European conquest of the Americas: aid of the peoples subjected by the local empires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@wtrmute
5 жыл бұрын
Very much this. It was _extremely difficult_ to transport large quantities of men in the 16th and 17th Centuries, so most of the Spanish/Portuguese/French colonisation of the Americas actually coöpted a lot of the local élites, who eventually adopted the European prestige cultures and slowly became Westernised. The interior of Brazil was colonised by mixed-race men who, though they fought with muskets and steel swords and were Catholics, typically could speak very few words of Portuguese! They generally spoke the dialect which dominated the coast of Brazil from the mouth of the Amazon down to the Tropic of Capricorn, called Abanheenga ("human speech"), Nheendyba ("common speech") or Nheengatu ("good language"). Meanwhile, Túpac Amaru II who led a revolt against the Spanish government in the 1780s was an ethnic Aymara who was part of the administrator caste of the fallen Incan Empire who had been running things more or less in the same fashion as they had previously for a quarter of a millennium since the fall of _Tawantinsuyu!_ The revolt was in a big way motivated by the changes in policy around the midpoint of the 18th Century due to ironically-named "Enlightenment" ideals of imposing cultural homogeneity and trying to stamp out native cultures for proper European ones...

IMO the best timeline for Native Americans would have been if the Vinland colony succeeded. Over the next ~500 years, that would have given time for the population to recover from the diseases and iron tech to disseminate. It probably would be more or less like your timeline with the main difference being a hybrid Iriquois-Norse culture in the North-East. Post ~1500s, that probably would yield a situation similiar to Africa and East Asia where they are behind the Europeans in technology but developed enough that outright conquest is difficult until the technological gap is sufficiently wide like in the 1800s. In that scenario, the American east coast would probably be expanded into by European trading companies much as India was in our timeline.

And without the European enlightenment when all the literature philosophy art and knowkedg about astronomy history science human hygiene medicine water filtration ..ect. was taken from the Americas ( the old world) to Europe ( the new world) to be studied and copied..this the term enlightenment...then it would be Europe that wouldn't be as advanced...maybe even wiped out by disease ...remember the planets first homo sapiens are from the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico where they appear 250000 years ago and meso Raza historical narratives go further back than any other culture on the planet ...no other cultures mention planetary extinction events of the 500000 years..about how Antarctica was 2500 miles to the north and inhabited by people ( called aztlan ) or about plate techtonics events that moved large masses of land...science in recent years has continued to confirm events that Raza historians have spoken on for thousands of years. ..so when this chump starts talking about how people in the Americas would help from Europe for their societies to modernize he's talked by out of his ass...this fool is just a mouthpiece for peckerwood historical distortion

It should be widely known that people in the Middle Ages had at least some knowledge that some land existed beyond the Atlantic, at least the most knowledgeable ones, like cardinals, academics and kings interested in this kind of topic. Erastothenes measured the circumference of the Earth comparing the shadows at the same hour of the day in Cyrenaica and in Alexandria, if im not mistaken, around the 4th century a.D., and he noted that the land surface should be much bigger than in Strabo's speculations. In the 11th century, some vikings went to Greenland and Newfoundland, not based in his assumptions, but somehow, word SHOULD get across in the european courts, along with a bunch of other legends of islands to the west, like Thule for an example.. So, yeah, people were not completely unaware of the possibility of western lands during the Middle Ages, and that's why many thought Columbus was a joke, some believed he eould die in the middle of the Atlantic or that he would stumble in another completely different land that wasn't India. St. Brendan voyage to Hy Brazil? Plausible, but unlikely, my best bet is that he reached Iceland or the Azores.

Firearms back in those times, and only up until recently, were pretty faulty; the ammunition could fall out as well as the powder, weather conditions would interfere trying to light the charge of the gun but even with fair weather it still wouldn’t always go off if charged

Interesting but there's a lot of errors in this as far as population estimates go. Also the Hunter gathers on the west coast being "too primitive" to adopt Western technologies is an extremely flawed and flat out wrong statement. Nothing preventing them from using Western technology/resources. The plains tribes adopted the horse after all, and used it to great advantage to fiercely fight off Western expansion. I strongly reject the idea of "primitive peoples", its very elitist and suggests some kind of ethnic superiority. The simple fact is that they didn't become civilizations because they didn't need to. Just as many call subsaharan Africa undeveloped when they were forced into a Western system from their tribal lifestyle that was far more sufficient. Colonialism left weak governments, minimal infrastructure, ethnic conflict, and borders that separated tribal peoples. Really enjoy your videos, just think you should consider other approaches when doing analysis.

I feel like if the Lenape (Delaware) could have actually done much better than become vassals. They inhabited land that included some of the best natural harbors and places to build ports (such as New York and Philadelphia) that today forms the most populated region of the country. The Iroquois were a small confederation inland in upstate New York. In a timeline where they acquire European technology instead of being conquered, I think it’s highly likely the Lenape would be a dominant power, easily overshadowing the inland Iroquois. Also, I would at least have the Powhatan controlling the Chesapeake bay region.

I do indeed still think the natives were somewhat peaceful, in America they did after all have a union to prevent war I believe. Which is pretty good I think.
@gi0m298

They were not peaceful at all, they had alliances like any country, but they often betrayed them and allied with the Europeans to get rid of the enemy tribes or kingdoms, they were just line any civilization ever, violent
@Potatotenkopf

@@gi0m298 they were far less densely populated than Europe meaning they naturally had less friction leading to less conflict, the one big instance of alliance between Europe and natives was the alliance to take down the Aztecs due to their human sacrifice. I'm not saying the natives were all bros because i know there was plenty of war as in any regions but in certain places people were too busy fighting the environment, nature, and the weather to worry about other people.
@gi0m298

@@Potatotenkopf you said it, there were less wars because there were less people and because of this there were less kingdoms neighboring each other, but in regions that had a lot of population, like in the Inca empire, wars were frequent, this was the way the Incas got their power, through war, the same apply to Aztecs and Mayas. But as you said, this was not because they were more peaceful, but because there were less kingdoms to declare war to

I think the Aztecs weren't going to last to much longer, they had an inefficient social structure and they were in a state of constant rebellion before the Spanish even arrived. I think they would've been shattered and the Tarascan empire, that was much more stable, would've rose and taken their place.

I would like to point the fact of the use of war dogs, they were more deadly than gunpowder (because they were not that much advance back in 1500´s) and horses (mostly because of how expensive they were and the terrain, it was mostly jungle so it was as useful as it seems..) There’s some fundamental problems with this alt. Because the effects were not and would not be evenly distributed. 1)guns were traded in the Great Lakes in return for furs horses spread from the south west by Spain perhaps in a n alt for gold 2) the cultural reactions of natives to trade and the alt methods of the Europeans. 3) the ongoing resistance by natives in respect to tribal expansion- basically when did what tribes get what and how did they react to it.

It really depends on whether they start making their own guns and gunpowder or have to buy it from europe. If they have to buy from europe then europe will made the wise financial decision to sell to both sides and try to keep things at an impass. But if one side started making thier own they would quickly dominate.

Best ending! Funniest thing I've heard is, there were Europeans talking about cannibalism which might've been practised in some places but Europe LITERALLY ALSO DID do that. I cannot imagine being so stupid as to be eating mummia (mummy) chocolate and wine and using it as medicine while crying cannibalism. Turns out mummia was a Persian word for pitch, and some Europeans were stupid enough to think mummia must mean mummies, and of course the Arabians had been right before so they started eating it. Thought they'd gain the mummies powers. At the absolute very least, some Native Americans (wrongly, obviously) believed there was a special radical afterlife for those who were sacrificed, but the Europeans didn't, no, just take mummies out of their graves. That's why most mummies are gone, I think like most have been eaten
