A photon is a quantum of electromagnetic radiation (light in the narrow sense), an elementary particle that is the carrier of electromagnetic interaction.
It is a massless particle that can exist in a vacuum only by moving at the speed of light. The electric charge of a photon is also zero. A photon can be in only two spin states with a spin projection on the direction of motion (helicity) of ±1. In physics, photons are denoted by the letter γ.
Classical electrodynamics describes a photon as an electromagnetic wave with circular right or left polarization. From the point of view of classical quantum mechanics, the photon as a quantum particle is characterized by corpuscular-wave dualism, it exhibits the properties of a particle and a wave at the same time. Quantum electrodynamics, which is based on quantum field theory and the Standard Model, describes a photon as a gauge boson that provides an electromagnetic interaction: virtual photons are carrier quanta of an electromagnetic field and provide an interaction between two electric or magnetic charges. They are assigned spin 1.
Photons are truly neutral particles, and have no antiparticles. The photon itself is its own antiparticle.
