You can't go wrong with cosmos, tobacco, and a sweet pea wigwam. That's my basis for a cottage garden, but even without those 3, so long as it looks wild and chaotic and colourful you're doing something right. It should look colourful, yet wild.

what works for me is setting a goal of planting one or two things I've never grown before each year--perennial or annual, no matter. You'd be surprised how quickly your garden grows up and out with just this one constraint, i.e., each year two new.

I never wanted orange or yellow either, just blue, purple and white...Then somehow the yellow cone flowers and black-eyed Susan's started growing from my late next door neighbor's garden that was dug out and mulched over and that was followed by sundrops and yellow evening primroses and yellow irises. Fabulous video. I am thrilled to find out that I am a member of the cottage garden tribe! All the elements you described are found in our urban plot. If a task is something I find enjoyable, then it's not work. I detest spraying fruit trees, regardless if the treatment is organic, and using motorized tools, finding I am way more tired after doing those chores then if I spaded the whole day! But yes, a cottage garden is CRAMMED with plants. It's cosy, the greenery is close by, and the connection between the gardener and nature is palpable.

Love to watch your well presented and informative videos. I can listen to you for ages. Keep on going! Can not understand the thumbs down. You said it very well: No lawn, fruit-trees for hight, and ever plant you like to grow plus a little wildflower - tada you have a cottage garden ;o) And even you have lawn or you like your lawn it is no problem. There is no cottage garden police that will arrest you for having a lawn. BUT think about a wild flower meadow with path mown in it, if you have enough space.

What an enjoyable video, thank you! I watched it several times. I have a video request. In this video you refer to a 'practical working area'. I don't have a potting shed, I don't know if I want one but I would like a place to keep my pots, soil and tools. I would love to see what others have and what they do if they don't have a potting shed. Actually I do have a potting shed but the chickens reside there.

Annuals mostly, and some native "weeds" like forget me not, columbine and Welsh poppy which I never planted. I try anything and keep what both thrives, and looks good. Throw everything in chaoticly, and order will arise. Organised chaos, and eccentricity is the key to a good, unique, 21st century cottage garden.

Lovely to watch this. I'm starting growing some little fruit shrubs/trees in my garden. I picked up raspberry and blackberry. Also adding some Hebes to my eventual front hedge. My back garden which is middle sized is a South aspect. While my front garden is a north aspect and is rather small. My goal with the north garden is to provide as much privacy as possible. My goal with the back is to support wildlife first and foremost. I have two ponds and I saw your advice on allowing shallower and deeper parts of the pond, so I'm going to rectify that situation with a piece of lumber dipped in so wildlife can crawl out if it needs to. I'll do that on both ponds

Thanks so much for sharing 🙏 I love the cottage style and in fact I designed my garden four years ago in just this design. I have a channel on here that shows a video compilation on what it looked like last summer. I used orange and yellow with purple and pink in places to contrast and to draw the eye through the border. You are correct, it is good to plant trees to add height to the border and I intend to grow climbing roses such as madam Alfred carrierre up through my black boy peaches in the orchard cottage garden. Being in New Zealand, we still have a draw to the mother land and when I was a child I always looked through gardening books with gorgeous and romantic cottage gardens, which was the inspiration for my very own garden. I would love to see more on cottage gardens from you, and thanks again 👌😃

Hello Alexandra, I am watching your videos for a while now, I love your view about gardening and environment. I have a pollinator garden ( very small about 2 feet by 10 feet), where I am also raising Monarch Butterfly. I have tiny patio garden in pots, I have shade garden ( basically the 3 feet distance between my house and the wall; inspired by Monty Don ). Some small tree came with the house . Four Indian Hawthorn majestic beauty, and nine small trees where my shade garden is, not sure the name is. Does not bloom or fruit , just between my house and wall. I was looking for more information about bugs in the garden. whenever I search for common bugs , all the searched I find is for pest control! No, I want natural bugs , worms, and insects to attract small birds or bee eaters. I find almost no info except bug hotels, which I am not sure because of termite issues in our area. I live in Southern California. Please see if you can educate us about bugs. Thanks in advance.

Thank you - your garden sounds delightful. And that's a good idea to do a video about bugs - I will have to look for an expert so it may take me a little time. As I understand it, the general theory is that all insects and bugs will thrive where there is a balanced environment, and one of the signs of a healthy balanced environment is that there are butterflies, so I suspect you are doing exactly the right things to encourage bugs into your garden already.

My favourite garden style! Here in the tropics, people love their formal hibiscus and bougainvillea hedges but I love the joyous abandon of colourful cottage borders. More videos like these please, Alexandra! I have a large square front lawn close to a windy coast, in full sun with just a 10ft Indian almond tree and a 25ft Bismarck palm as the only trees, so I am in the process of establishing 3ft border with curving beds around the perimeter to break it all up. So far I have planted peach oleander, golden palms and purple texas sage for punctuations of height with light blue plumbago and spicy scarlet and golden yellow lantana for the next height level. I am looking at sweet potato vine, hardy rice ferns and foxtail ferns and other ground covers that can take the heat for the lower level. Here and there I have croutons, ficus, billowy green and purple grasses and lilies which flower once a year but sport thick grass-like foliage year-round.

My garden is quite crowded with plants and I don't tend to get it, but I think once it's in your soil, it's quite difficult to get rid of and you do have to be a bit more careful with spacing. I had a look at the advice for it, and even the experts seem a bit vague about it!

@@TheMiddlesizedGarden Thank you kindly for your answer :-) As for "experts"...Well, I purchased Oso Easy rosebush. It supposed to be disease and pest free and good for my area. 2 days later, there were spittle bugs all over the rose bush. Go figure!

The best thing about cottage garden style is that it's about growing plants that are easy to grow where you live. So if there are neighbour's gardens you admire, ask them what their plants are (people are usually so happy to talk about their gardens.) Typical 'cottage garden plants' seen in this video that will grow in zone 5 include some roses (check on the label or with the seller), cosmos, lupins, some salvias and foxgloves. Also if you visit a nursery or garden centre near you, you can ask which flowers and plants will survive the winter. The other good thing about cottage garden style is that you can experiment - if you plant something and it dies, you can fill in with another plant you like. It's just about growing lots of different plants and colours together rather than having a strict colour palette to stick to. Hope that helps.

Try to buy zone 4 or three plants, roses especially, and plant roses deep and mulch with DRY peat mulch after ground freezes. Most perennials with survive if soil is well drained, water well up till freeze up and mulch as for roses. If you can find any of Lois Holes flower books ,she was a great Canadian prairie gardener.

Do you think that "English style flower garden" and Cottage Garden are synonymous?
@TheMiddlesizedGarden

Both are quite relaxed, colourful styles of gardening, but they're not quite the same - the cottage style of gardening is packed with flowers of all kinds, but doesn't usually have a lawn or grand features, while 'English country garden' may have colour themed borders, lawns, statues, pergolas and other features. You could have a 'cottage garden' area within an English country garden, though. There's more about English country garden style here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t6qBxYatg6mJdpw

Thank You! Believe it or not I've been in charge of an English style garden in the U.S. for quite a few years and though I "get" and work to achieve the style each year that the designer set for it, I've yet to find actual descriptions! Even in landscape history books!

I have to say how refreshing it is to watch this informal and abundant approach to cottage gardens. It has grown a little tiresome to be told of the rules, style and the plants that are an absolute must which totally misses the point of a cottage garden. Thank you

I've tried to get a cottagey look to my garden, but I struggle to succeed with lupins. The slugs always get them. I've protected them this year but the whole plant seems so slow growing and I've never yet seen flowers on them. In the front garden I grew foxgloves but they looked sickly, especially the leaves. I think cottage gardens do best in alkaline soil, not acid like ours. I now grow what is happy to grow and survives without too much fuss.

Cottage gardens can be in any soil. The point is to grow what works for you and your area without too much fuss. If lupins and foxgloves don't, you grow what does - it doesn't make it any less a cottage garden!

Hi, love cottage garden so much. Thank you for the videos. I'm planning to change my garden to this style. I have two main questions before I start,1. If the flower beds are next to the grass lawn, will the self seeding flower seeds go in to the grass lawn and be hard to be controlled, how to prevent it? 2. To make a all year round beautiful garden I think I should seed and nurse in green house first. Do you have article about for each month or season we could seed which type of flowers? Or any book you recommend? I'm expecting your response. Thanks in advance!

Firstly, when you mow your lawn, the lawnmower chops off any seedlings before they have a chance to invade, so that isn't a problem. Some plants are good grown from seed or in a greenhouse, but most can be bought as mature plants. The great thing about this style is that it's fine to have lots of different plants at different times and you can mix them up. It's something you develop as you go along. The Bold and Brilliant Garden by Sarah Raven really helped me when I started gardening. It's here: amzn.to/3kUb4y7 And although I haven't read it, I think the Modern Cottage Garden by Greg Loades should be good: amzn.to/3yEs7cs. Note that links to Amazon are affiliate which means I may get a fee if you buy, but it doesn't affect the price you pay.

Beautifully comprehensive video! Truly enjoyed, even though I'm well familiar with an english garden style .. lol. The pics were just spectacular! I was wondering, have you done a video solely on privacy, sharing, and sound barrier planting? Would love to see what you thoughts are on this common problem - for both large estates and small abodes such as urban rentals. Thank you for the consideration!
