A song written and composed by Daryl Hall. It was first recorded in 1980 by the American duo Hall & Oates but was not released as a single. A cover version of the song by Paul Young became an international hit in 1985, reaching No. 1 in the US and No. 4 in the UK

Paul Young is the first voice you hear on "Do They Know it's Christmas?"(followed by other British legends). All of this definitely fits into your music for December.
@willdwyer6782
2 жыл бұрын
Do They Know it's Christmas was written in 1984 by Bob Geldof in reaction to news reports of the Ethiopian famine. It was recorded by Band-Aid, a 37 member supergroup featuring some of the most popular British music acts at the time, including Phil Collins, Kool & the Gang, The Boomtown Rats, Duran Duran, Wham!, and Spandau Ballet. It was released December 3, 1984 to raise money for famine relief. After the release of the record, Geldof organized the July 13, 1985 Live-Aid worldwide concert, also for the purpose of raising money for famine relief.

@@kennethbauscher1489 What's that got to do with the comment about Do They Know It's Christmas? No one is saying Paul Young wrote that or this song? Odd comment. It is interesting, but someone already made that comment on response to the video, not this thread. I'm not sure how much of a songwriter Paul was, to me he was an amazing singer. Many great singers didn't write their own songs.

Cute little story about the backing vocalists: Paul used to work with a group of female backing vocalists until the time came to work on the parent album this song is from, when the group wanted to do their own solo music deal. He was happy for them, expecting that they would continue working with him simultaneously, but they didn't want to, so they have less vocals on his second album than the debut. He decided to switch the whole thing up and get male vocalists, a particular group who were willing to sing on record but not willing to tour because they felt they were too old. Paul insisted, and they went. Afterwards the group agreed it was the most fun tour they'd ever been a part of lol. Please react to: Level 42 - Something About You.

Jay and Amber, thanks for another great reaction! I really do appreciate the both of you taking the time to share your reactions with us! Have either of you ever listened to any music by the group BREAD? If you haven't, please give them a try, because you won't be sorry! I've seen others react to their music, and they end up LOVING IT! Most of the time, they have a nice and easy, soft rock sound that's very romantic, and will pull at your heartstrings! DAVID GATES was their lead singer, and I really feel that the two of you would enjoy hearing his voice, along with the beautiful music that this 70's/80's group put out. Please start with EVERYTHING I OWN, but you'll also enjoy some of their other hits too: BABY I'M-A-WANT-YOU, MAKE IT WITH YOU, IF, GUITAR MAN, AUBREY, DIARY, IT DON'T MATTER TO ME, and LOST WITHOUT YOUR LOVE. David Gates biggest hit as a solo artist was GOODBYE GIRL. But he also had hits with NEVER LET HER GO, and CLOUDS. Thanks again for reacting to all the choices that you have made in the past. The great Pino Palaldino played bass for him on the album and the tour. That bass line, all the bass lines from this era of Paul Young are super fantastic. Pino plays the best sounding fret less bass on the planet. Paul was a new wave artist, but with a huge love of Motown and soul, so he wrote a lot of songs in that style, and covered a few. Come Back and Stay ( Live Aid 1985 ) is one you simply cannot miss. Stunning performance. It will make you want to get up and dance. I remember this,on the radio when I lived in England. His version is a cover of the original. (You should listen to Sans Una Dona,with Zucherro.) "Love of the Common People" was written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins,eventually released in 1970 on John Hurley's album "John Hurley Sings about People". The lyrics tell a bleak story of poverty and unemployment. There is a mention of "free food tickets," a reference to government food stamp and welfare programs, in the very first line, and the lyrics also describe the subject family as having holes in their clothes and their shoes. The last verse advises the subject family to keep their faith strong and to maintain hope for improvement.

Since black music was allowed on the airwaves, and later, on to tv, the U.K. has been in love with our music. It's like the "British invasion" of the Beatles, but in reverse...I guess. So, here you have the 80's of at least 2 to 2 1/2 decades worth of inspired British musicians who grew up on that late 50's R&B/ 60's Motown swag sound, and 70's funk/ disco...and then you can hear the inspiration in these British musicians works. Hence, Blue eyed soul is born. It gives it an almost nostalgic feel to it. I love this song. And he sings it like he is feeling the emotion. Top old school Blue eyed soul artists...for me: George Michael, Daryl Hall from Hall and Oates, Michael McDowell, Boy George, Michael Bolton, Steve Perry.
