Really great demonstration Jeremy. In summary for others. In summary, this is how you increase the energy in your body from a biochemical standpoint. It's a really nice explanation. You eat a plant which absorbes sunlight and used photosynthesis to create ATP. This is stored energy. In your body, when you digest food, the ATP meets the water in your body (more water is good in your body). The P in ATP is bonded molecularly by electrons. When they come in contact with water, one of the phosphates bonds with water. The electrons of the original molecule then collapses into a lower energy state releasing more energy. This energy can be used to create heat (exothermic reaction) or help out other reactions you need to produce in your body (mechanical, chemical other energy). The result is ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and the new phosphate that is broken with water (hydrolysis). What happens to the ADP? You "P" it out or breathing can help you get energy and put the P and ADP back together again as ATP (endothermic reaction). This happens so much during the day that the equivalent of your *entire body weight* is burned in ATP. But you only ate a pound of food today, so why don't you vanish? Because it is always being recycled as ADP by breathing. Want more energy, eat drink pee and breathe more. www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/cellular-molecular-biology/cellular-respiration/v/atp
