One of the great things I love about my community is that you all are more than happy to toss me questions. I may not always have the answer, but I will do the research needed to find out. This weeks video actually answers a question that was brought up at my Paintstorm Studio - Mask Brush To Create Textures video.
Hey did you figure out how the clipping mask works? The name implies it is not the layer mask. - Claas Kuhnen
Indeed I did.
The Clipping Mask
The clipping mask is not something I had used when I made the original video. I was still learning the digital painting programs I had, and some of the tools and options were way over my head. After a couple of years of digital painting I feel I have a much better understanding of the tools. Surprisingly enough though, I didn't learn about clipping masks in Paintstorm Studion. Instead it was Adobe Illustrator that showed me how useful a clipping mask could be.
See, a clipping mask will clip a layer to the layer below it. And anything you draw on the clipping layer will only show up on the layer below. This can be utilized in a variety of ways. You can lay down your base color, and then do shading on a layer above without worrying about going "outside the lines." You can bring a texture image in and lay it over top of a layer, clip it, and you end up only texturing what you need.
So enjoy the video and have some fun with clipping masks.
