Here's a fun, maths geometry problem: We have a triangle with side lengths 10, 22 and y. The area of this triangle is 88 units squared - what is the value of y? Pause the video here, grab a pen and paper and get solving - we'll reveal an animated solution in the video!
Hint
A great way to approach problems involving scalene triangles is to split them into 2 right-angled triangles - we can do this by drawing a perpendicular line (from the top) to the base. See what you can do when you spilt the triangle in two… Could you work out the height?
Hint 2
The base has a length of 22 and let's label the height of the triangle as h. We know that the area of a triangle is 1/2 * b * h: in this triangle, 88 is the area, which is equal to 1/2 * 22 * h. 1/2 times 22 is 11, so 88 is equal to 11h. Dividing both sides by 11, we get h = 8. Now you know the height - could you work out the side length of one right-angle triangle… Does this help you see how to solve for side y?
