I actually like "Young Sheldon" SO much more than "Big Bang Theory." Maybe it's the refreshing absence of a laugh track, the charismatic performances from the ensemble cast, the 80's/90's soundtrack, or Iain Armitage as younger Sheldon. But it's definitely grown on me over time.

On Tam hating his cultural food and wanting to try Sheldon's Americanized food. This is a trope that we see a lot in tv shows where there is the token POC, and I feel like this is such a weird trope. Growing up, I loved my Ashkenazi Jewish food, and I was proud of it, even when I got weird looks from my white, Christian peers. And my POC friends loved their cultural food and were so happy and willing to exchange traditional food when we went to each other's houses and explain the traditions behind them to each other. I had a lot of Indian friends growing up and we tended to gravitate towards each other because my family kept kosher so we ate vegetarian outside the house, and since many Indian people are vegetarian, I just related so much to their experiences. I wish nuances like this were talked about more, but it's always the weird POC and/or non-Christian kid amongst a ton of white Christians hating on their traditional food and wanting the American food. I dunno... Am I making sense?

I assumed it was a symbol for integration. When the immigrant decides to shun their own cultural foods and embrace American obesity-in-a-can, that shows they are a proper American now and not a suspicious-acting outsider who isn't loyal to the country.

Yeah I honestly feel like it comes from the same kind of bigotry that makes little white kids bully kids of color for their packed lunch. Except now the bullies are in control of the characters so they can make the person of color dislike their home country's food, I guess to make sure were all clear about the fact that we're meant to be making fun of other cultures here 🙄

I am going to offer a different perspective , as someone who studied Asian American literature. The Asian kids hating their culture, trope was based on first gen immigrants' kids, wanting to fit in, and doing so by rejecting their parent's culture. Kids born from those parents wanted to learn more of the culture that was robbed from them since they were still treated as outsiders. You can see this pattern in early Asian American literature and memoirs. There was a lot of writers grappling with this need to fit in, and having to juggle their culture. like early literature always emphasizes parent being outdated and strange. There are so many memoirs talking about how Asian Americans in high school people were rejecting them for their food. A lot of this generation sought to be American, and hated their parent's culture. Considering the writers were mostly from this generation, I imagine these were Asians these writers interacted with. There is a of course a nugget of racism, from putting it in. But this is actually accurate to that time period. For modern day -Americans we have a completely different mindset of assimilation. , It's erasure, a point of contention and colonization and it's pretty frowned on to not know your culture. Like think of all the words we have for POC folks who "act White" or adhere totally to American culture. They are typically frowned upon now. Before they would have been praised for being able to assimilate properly. I don't like the trope, but it was an Asian American experience. And it wasn't just Asians either, my Latino father used to tell me it was in fashion for Mexican Americans to call themselves Texan, aka not have any ties to their culture and be wholly assimilated. For me as a modern Asian American and Latina it's terrifying to think that people would want our colonizers to erase our cultures. But I understand why they did it, when people could be openly racist and not face as much consequences.

The issue with Sheldon is that he is what can be referred to as "twice exceptional". He is a genius, but he is also extremely deficient in other areas. Being intelligen, sure but not knowing everything. Getting by accident manipulated by people but also finding deep friendships. I dunno. It's a lot to put in a comment. Autistic here too, I felt represented with Sarah in Labyrinth, when she prefers her fantasies and escapism over dating and socializing. Oh, and feeling bothered when people ask you to interact with the world around when you don't really understand the mechanics of the world. That the world of your own making makes much more sense than the real world. But then again, I was (and still am, somewhat) a parascosmic escapist on the spectrum, who finds characters like Sarah and Bastian Balthazar Bux (Neverending Story) much more relatable than say Bella, with her unhealthy obsession with Hybristophilia and throwing away her life for an endless one with a domineering, childish monster boy.

I feel like if Young Sheldon weren’t a prequel and therefore wasn’t limited to the canon of BBT, then it might be better because we’d be able to get actual growth in our titular character. We’d also be able to have a canon diagnosis for Sheldon and have his family learn to work with that. Have Sheldon learn that the world doesn’t revolve around him (seriously, the main reason I can’t watch it is because of that one fact) and that him not being immediately good at something does not mean it’s useless. He can still have low empathy, but he’s also a smart kid. Give him an actual chance to learn and grow.

I actually felt bad for George because he gets taken advantage of and is treated badly by everyone in his family. His emotional affair made sense when no one appreciated him when he tried his best. I do appreciate seeing George have a nice friendship with Melissa and when he evolves and fights for what Sheldon wants. My favorite familial relationships are Sheldon and Melissa and his bond with his grandmother. His grandmother seems to be the most supportive of him, but is not afraid to humble him and call him out on bad behavior. What I like the most about this show is that Sheldon becomes a three dimensional character with traits some can relate to and does not justify his bad behaviors but helps us understand them. He also does not seem like a big jerk all of the time as he grows and evolves. It seems to try to fix issues that the original show had. I am not a fan of the big bang theory, but do love Young Sheldon.

Big Bang theory and Young Sheldon are those shows that I love, and enjoy but still can be and I am very critical of. I’m a young person, gen z through and through, who grew up watching the Big Bang theory. I taught myself how to play “soft kitty” on the recorder when I was in fifth grade. I relate to and empathize with the characters, Sheldon especially, and have found myself growing up with them. I have impassioned debates with my mother about themes and representation in the show! There’s a lot of reasons to both love and hate both shows but, to be entirely honest, the thing that is most criticized about the bbt extended universe is the thing that I find most relatable. Sheldon’s autism is something I greatly relate to in a plethora of ways. I’m not autistic, but I am adhd, disorders that share a lot in common. I have and still do struggle with a lot of the same things that Sheldon has: issues with independence, reading a room and determining tone, perfectionism, being a germaphobe, and struggling with admitting when I was wrong. Growing up neurodivergent, I could not find people who thought or acted like me, so being able to see Sheldon in this show that my parents loved to watch and did so constantly meant a lot. The scene where Sheldon, bombarded with seemingly a million different changes at once, finds himself at the train station, ticket booked, planning on going anywhere else so he could take time for himself to sort through his thoughts still sticks with me and had since I was little. It’s a scene that I very vividly remember and empathize with because I craved that ability to just walk away from the millions of changes going on in my own life and take time to just think. Sheldon is a character that is deeply important to me but I’m able to, now, recognize that he is a self absorbed dick with a superiority completely. But even then, I can also recognize that he doesn’t deserve the ableism and mockery he faces from his friends. I am able to enjoy a show and character while still being critical of their actions and stigmatizations, and I think people forget that? I perfectly understand why people hate these shows and they are completely valid and correct in their views, I just can’t let the show go, especially because, under all the bullshit racism, misogyny, ableism, homophobic, xenophobic bullshit, there is a story about this group of friends who develop and grow as friends and as a family. Please, I am simply a humble neurodivergent queer, I am an absolute sucker for found family ;-; And y’know what? I like young Sheldon FOR (most) the things being criticized!!!!! Again, more relating to neurodivergency than anything else. I was raised with that “why can’t you just be normal” lense!!!!!! I am able to look at things said and done in this show, such at the bow-tie incident, and look back at how I was raised, my father often taking away things that were keeping me from break down after break down, and I’m able to look at the show, recognize “HEY THATS FUCKED UP” and then look at my ablest father’s action and realize that I didn’t deserve to be treated that way!!!! Young Sheldon is this poor person’s therapy- Depicting that struggle for the young neurodivergent person can be important for neurodivergent people!! It is very important to depict that shit so people, nd kids especially, can recognize what is and isn’t okay, to be able to set standards for their own treatment through this exaggerated portrayal. Big Bang theory is FAR from the right show to be demonstrating right and wrong, but I feel that young Sheldon isn’t the worst at it,,,? I’m not telling you to use young Sheldon as your moral basis please for the love of god do not- I think what I’m trying to get at here though is that there are lessons to be learned from it that arent demonstrated as much in other forms of media. I know a lot of people might not agree with Meemaw’s approach at getting Sheldon out of the garage but I kinda commend it? It’s a neurotypical world. If he continued to live his life as a space man, he never would have been able to achieve so much in life. We have to navigate through a world meant for people who think a certain way and punish others for thinking differently. Masking is, unfortunately, important. It’s undeniably nice to be able to be yourself!!!! To be able to unmask and unwind!!!!!! But it just won’t stand in professional and important settings. Appearances are, miserably, everything. Anyways, all this to say, Sheldon is a more complex and important character than people give him credit for. I will always be rational and critical of the media I consume, and I will forever be disappointed and disgusted with how the Big Bang franchise demonstrates different issues, but I will also still always sob like a baby when Sheldon gives his nobel prize speech, thanking his friends, his family, for being there for him, no matter how difficult it was and will be.

i think a comparison between abed from community and sheldon from big bang theory just beautifully paints what big bang did wrong, cuz at the end of the day sheldon and abed are incredibly similar, they're both hyper intelligent nerds with a neurodivergency who have a tendency to be anti-social, yet one is often ranked with some of the best representation while the other is ranked with the worst, because abed in community is rarely the butt of the joke for his neurodivergency and when he is the character who made the joke is usually shunned by the rest of the characters, and when abed screws up the show doesn't present it like he's incapable of change or like he's totally innocent, community even shows that abed may take special approaches to cope with loss or pain but at the end of the day it works for him (a good example being the episode where troy leaves) it's just an immaculate comparison to me

It's not really a single joke: It's two jokes, aimed at two segments of the audience, told using the same lines. Like the classic illusion of the rabbit and the duck: People hear the joke that they personally find funny. You get to laugh at the dad, while someone a bit older would be laughing at the 'youth of today' for calling everyone racist.

This is a really good video tho and I'm glad you made it. It's interesting to see ways that it's more thoughtful than the Big Bang Theory, which I initially enjoyed to a degree but started to hate because of the rampant sexism, racism, and the fact that it started making fun of the nerds more than ask the audience to relate.

I actually really like this show, the answer to who is my grandma. I think maybe I don’t actually like Chuck Lorre shows, I just enjoy spending time with my family and seeing them laugh. I think it’s also because I grew up a lot like Sheldon, in a traditional Texan family that cared more about its image then being good parents. At the same time though I do reserve any patriotic feelings for Texas, so I guess that part is fun for me too

Humans are different, we are built on different experiences hence different needs and wants. is it that hard to respect that? even big bang theory i thought it was decent but the amount of hate it gets is just sad, and the amount of hate towards the fans of the show is even more pathetic.

I think you just nailed the main problem of how neurodivergent people are portrayed in media: this kind of shows don't represent *who* the ND's are or their strenghts and flaws, they present only how "annoying" they are and how others _deal with them_ . For example, you keep talking about Sheldon's "superiority complex". That's a totally neurotypical reading. Some people in the spectrum _are_ superior indeed. I know it sounds screechy, but let me explain: if you were a carpenter, you'd be right in thinking you're better than the average person at working with wood; that's an undeniable thruth, but you've been soicialized to learn it is "rude" to express this belief out loud. Now, aspies are like the carpenter, they know they're better than the average in some matters, but they don't hide that belief. That doesn't mean they ignore their own lack of knowledge in other subects or that they don't recognise when another "carpenter" is better. Hence, it's not a coping mechanism, people on the spectrum just find it unsettling that NT's feel diminished about that. You also said Sheldon enjoys "puttin them on their place". Again, that's an NT reading. People on the spectrum only care about having the facts correct, not what other people do or don't do. Another analogy to make the point: suppose you're at school and everyone says human heart is placed in the foot, then you go and say "No, it's actually placed in the chest" and then everyone turns and look you badly for being so inconsiderate for correcting them, or worse, they use irrational arguments to "prove" you wrong... and you're like "What? Are their egos so fragile they can't deal with someone correcting them? What is wrong with these people?". I used these exaples to show how media help in having NT's prejudiced against ND's and always read them as "jerks" (having their biases confirmed). That is a way of discrimination, as big as racial or gender discrimination. It leads to forcing ND's to act "normal" instead of trying to understand where their actions come from and let them be a little bit more who they are. Yes, people on the spectrum need help in learning how to bond and try to communicate in a less harsh way. Later in life, their lack of social skills may lead them to be lonely (and sometimes, unemployed). But also more empathy is needed to be modelled for NT's; the world is made just for them, so they can't see how it may be a struggle for everyone else.

Tbh, me and my family watch it. Why? Because I can relate to Sheldon and my parents can relate to a lot of the situations with Sheldon. While I may not be diagnosed with autism (I have wait until August to even get tested), I can relate so much to him not getting along with Billy, to him and Missy arguing, to not understandig social cues and rules, to being smarter than your peers (caused me a lot, and I mean *a lot* of trouble with fitting in), to his way too honest interactions. Yes, I may not be a straight up genius (tho I have tests for being a lot above average IQ wise, my EQ is probably very below average) but I can still relate to him.

as an autisic person i dont like how they show autism in either of the shows, but the only thing that is very reaslistic is how thye show the mother, like my mum treats me almost exactly how you described in "Sheldon deserves better parents", lots of autisic peoples parent dont really see what we need or listen to us and instead think how they can help us is by trying to force some form of "normality" to us, and the other parts of trying to keep us seeing them a certain way and "be on their side" and babying or them fearing our indpendance you described about her i also commonly experance with my own mother and ik others who are autisic experance with their parents, i also think the father is shown pretty well to how many parents of autisic people act, liek kind of not aware of hwo to act and trying to hide anything that makes you not seem normal

Honestly I think if it hadn’t been for it’s connection to the og Big Bang theory, young sheldon could have had a lot more potential for being an interesting exploration of growing up as an autistic kid around that time. I’m autistic and I agree that the way it handles it still sucks, but I find elements of the family dynamics relatable & it’s a shame they couldn’t lean more into that. I would’ve liked to see a more well rounded character in young Sheldon (like learning to respect people for things other than raw intelligence) but since he’s, yknow, Young Sheldon Cooper, he’s super limited in the character development department as he’s destined to end up like the adult Sheldon from the og show (aka insufferable).

I've only watched so much of each show, but I agree. I feel like some prequels can't really be that good because of what will happen later. I felt this way with Mixed-ish. I want a different outcome than what will come and that did make watching the show (I only watched a little bit because of this.) a little sad. I also realized early on for Mixed-ish we would have to see little Bow's religious adventure and her mom's reaction. I'm a Christian (denomination: United Church of Christ church) and I think that a lot of modern religious stories (like after Seventh Heaven went off the air) get sad and almost ignorant to the fact a lot of America is still Christian and not everyone is crazy with it and there are nonChristians (other religions, no religion, in between, etc.) who are really hurtful too. I'd rather just see people live their lives and sometimes end up at their place of worship, like I used to see done in the 90s/early 2000s and from reruns of older shows, like Good Times. I know that I'm straight/cisgender though and it's a part of how I experience the world. It's my privilege. I think the way religion gets portrayed can make or break a show now and be very isolating and triggering. That's because of the way Christianity, then with some afterthought from the more liberal crowd (I'm progressive, it's a spectrum), Islam, and even some forms of Judaism and other religions* get used to hurt people, when the same people don't want traditional interpretations used against them. *Although other religions being used to hurt people are not really cared about by white, black, and Latino/Latina/LatinX Christians, especially if the people are seen as too exotic to ever be even partially American or Western.

It's important that we be able to portray bigotry in media, because it's a real aspect of life, and a lot of people who face discrimination find it helpful to explore it through art. But the problems come when the narrative frames the bigotry as justified.. like with the Vietnamese food thing. But bad faith actors are gonna keep making stories where they try to justify bigotry, so I guess the best we can do is call it out when we see it 👊😔 Anyway ,, thanks for the video ! You're making me consider watching this show. Thoughtful review. It's interesting that Sheldon's [coded] neurodivergence is why he rejected humanities subjects. I know it's pretty common, especially for autistic men because of how men are socialized in western society. Though as an autistic woman, that ineptitude is precisely what has me studying social science. I was a bit of a Sheldon as a kid, unfortunately. I wasn't outright dismissive of anything I deemed unintellectual but I refused to use emojis, didn't understand it when other girls got crushes, and I avoided popular music. It did hurt when people thought it was weird that I didn't understand popular things. I hate insults that are in reference to how "cool" someone is. But I've also met "Sheldons" who were more textbook. My experience with them and general annoyance with TBBT had me steering away from this. Your review showed me that there's something a wide range of people could potentially enjoy watching.

@maddiemaccheese8170

That's absolutely true. My parents (older Gen X) watched The Middle from its premier to its finale religiously. They love it. They're midwestern suburban middle class parents, so it really resonated with them. I think it's cute, but that may be since I was watching it with them since I was 8. They watched other shows too obviously, but nothing has connected with them quite like The Middle. Young Sheldon came out right as The Middle was ending, and it's the first thing they gravitated toward. They also liked The Big Bang Theory, so a show which basically combined the two was exciting for them. I personally think Young Sheldon is a lot better than it's given credit for, like it's surprisingly good considering how unnecessary it is, but it has its fair share of problems. I think you're 100% on the money about its target demographic.
