I have lived in Thailand long enough that you just don’t open up a business without having the finances, and a Thai partner you can trust. The restaurant looks very spacious and modern, ( not a hole in a wall) so I felt there was a big gap in this successful entrepreneur story. Who was “we”? “We decided to open the cafe.” Big money is needed to open such a business and someone has to know the restaurant business- not how to bake banana bread. Julia’s personality is very likable and comes off as a leader in anything she does. I wish her the best.
@sebastianniqvist3144

True, the devil is in the details. I’ve also heard that a Thai partner is a must for any business. If it works for her then is great but in reality things are much harder. Healthy food, vegan food and all those new age dietary tendencies are good but I much rather sell to 80% of the population and appeal to the masses rather than a small segment. Her restaurant looks awesome and good luck to her but I also feel lots of details are missing.

How many highly priced vegan cakes can you sell in Bangkok? There is no shortage of delicious desserts in Bangkok, arguably some of the best dessert selection (Thai and Western) in the world. Thailand is where I first discovered Banana Bread 20 years ago. And successfully running the business while being in England for 7 months during Covid? Not meaning to be negative and she is a great lady that I wish all the best but there are some gaping holes in this story (acknowledging you cant fit someone's entire life into a 20 minute interview). @@chickengod9184 Technically there is nothing wrong with it, its been like that since the beginning of times, you want to feel younger so you look for a younger mate. Whats also real is seeing a man who can't control his desires, and looking at a 60+ man with a 20 year old just feels wrong, universally worldwide. An older male hawking for a chick who could be his daughter communicates a couple of things CLEARLY. It means that man couldn't date in his age range or didn't want to. He could not maintain the prior relationships or couldn't make it work. Youg people are dumb and easy to manipulate so its softcore pedo behaviour and it just feels WRONG. Unless your rich, famous or excessively good looking you get 'left on the side' in London. British women fall for these foreigners in London but foreign women in London seem to avoid English Guys who approach them like we're only after one thing or like we're something worse and should be avoided for their own safety. You see it in the Nightclubs, Bars everywhere in London. Average White British Male in London you don't stand much chance. always interesting listening to expats discussing the draw back to their home country. I moved to London in my early 30s from New Zealand and had 6 of the best years of my life. Earned a pile of cash in the City, bought a house in Putney, travelled, took copious amounts of party drugs, went to the theatre, Glastonbury, concerts, dance events...it was *epic*. But after 5 or so years you kinda reach a point where you notice you are becoming more and more distant from your family and home culture and you have to decide to either embrace your new country and accept that lost closeness with friends and family, or go back. We did go back to NZ after 6 years, and I kinda wish I'd stayed in London now TBH. But that's life - every opportunity taken leaves other opportunities lost. As Scotty P has tattoo'd on his chest - "No Ragrets" 😅

@@stangoodvibes Interesting topic for further discussion I'd say. It's very relevant during this period when there are so many displaced persons throughout the world, war refugees and others escaping terrible conditions. As a Pommy Migrant of the early 1950's, I felt deeply the loss of British cousins and extended family, none of whom could afford to travel to Western Australia except a rich aunt on two occasions. I returned once for a few weeks as an adult, and hardly recognised anything of my childhood, (places or family). My migrant wife had the same experience when we visited her family in the Midlands. Now as an Expat in Chiang Mai for 22 years, I'm again experiencing that disconnect from my Aussie extended family, yet haven't embedded myself properly into the Thai culture either. It's a feeling of never quite fitting in anywhere, yet unable to go back and slot-into the emptiness that was left behind. Such a dilemma must now be more common, as the world gets more disrupted each year. One has to find happiness and satisfaction in the simple, easily available pleasures such as taking a walk, having cats and dogs, feeding strays and chatting with those who'll listen 🤔🙂

@@BrassLock interesting story. I plan to semi retire in Thailand in my late 50s in a couple of years. I'm surprised you haven't felt like you've integrated into Thai society after 22 years! Why is that? Is that common? I just got back from 8 months in Thailand as a holiday and also a trial extended stay to see not only how I would feel about Thailand culture but also how I'd go with my (age appropriate degree educated) Thai GF whom I had only spent one week with before Covid kept us apart for 18 months. The GF thing went incredibly well - she's a mad keen diver and cyclist and we made some great connections through both with Thai ppl. I have a big network of Thai friends already. I think I would need about a Rai of land close to Hua Hin upon which to build a high wall enclosed 'compound' to give me some sanctuary from the madness (lol) and a very large Ford Ranger to feel safe(ish) on the roads. A few years of learning Thai, and a trip back to Australia or NZ for 2 months of each year... given those parameters I think I could make Thailand my home.

Also her love/hate relationship with BKK (and actually that applies to most of LoS). Interestingly, of her likes and dislikes, her relationship/interactions with Thais themselves stayed out of the picture, only regarding staff, but not on a personal level. The food is great, etc etc, but climate too hot, but no comment about the Thais, which is in its core what makes Thailand. Congrats! Pete. Super nice lady! Great questions and honest answers. Life is always ups and downs but like Julia. We all make loads of choices daily. Actions turn dreams into reality. It will either work or not work. Either way you will learn something.

Great interview. Julia is an interesting character. The one thing I would say is, if you're single in your mind 30s, it's your fault and yours alone. Don't blame the country, people, environment etc. Bangkok is more multicultural than most cities. I'm sorry but the comments about the men not being good enough here come off as a bit salty to me.

Yes, sir. Western feminism has mistakenly told women that they are all entitled to a man who is 6ft tall, makes $100,000 a year, and looks like an underwear model. A lot of these women think that because of the attention they receive when they are in their early and mid-20s, that this will always continue, so their standards and requirements for men are often times completely unrealistic. Then by the time a woman reaches her 30s, she begins to notice that the men in their thirties who she feels that she deserves, are only interested in dating women in their twenties. So the window for her dating life is starting to close and pass her by. She's probably a fine gal, but I imagine her standards are extremely high. Men come to Thailand to date petite, feminine women and oftentimes have the luxury of expanding the age gap, if they so choose.

I agree with you. Not a personal attack on her as she see a like a nice lady and I only see her projected through a 20 minute interview but in general Caucasian women can’t compete with the Thai women. Not even close. That’s why most of them get a cat. Pete’s a nice guy and the growth of his channel probably keeps him from tackling this sticky subject. Good interview

This exactly. Bangkok is multicultural, but many Western women refuse to date Asians and other ethnicities here and want to stay in their bubble. You reap what you sow really.

Interesting that staff can just walk out. I find that a common Thai trait. They are usually 110% committed (the missus) or away with the fairies. A brilliant interview. She seems delighted to offload her experiences. We do love to blabber!

Very Enterprising Woman with a good head on her shoulders. In Thailand it's great to see and i have always found the Thai women to be more of a can do attitude to making things work and wanting their business ideas to grow. From her body language though i doubt she will be staying in the land of smiles for the long haul, but best of luck to her anyway.

It would be inconceivable for me to date a non-Thai in Thailand. I want the translation benefits and knowledge of the culture! I wouldn't date a non-Thai within Thailand unless I was rich.

Having opened a number of cafes and restaurants myself and as a professional patisserie chef, I would like to know more about this story.I wonder how you go from making banana bread at home into having 10 staff and a large shop in Bangkok in only 7 years, it is not cheap to open a shop.

@@andyhoyle511agree. The cafe seems to be at EMQuartier. Definitely a very expensive location. Very expensive to get started. No customers in the cafe, yet she wears a gold Rolex watch ... Unfortunately his interviews are mostly entertaining and hardly ever get to the bottom. She told him a fairy tail and he went with it ... there was no healthy food in Thailand 😂 then goes and makes banana bread 😂

Another first-rate interview! This lady is immediately charming! She can build that business without limit, as she wants. The secret is: "It's NEVER easy!" I've had a very close Indian-Brit lady friend and business partner -- purely platonic -- and would love to socialize and be a friend to this talented lady, too. Alas, my Bangkok days are over.

That was I waited for a great woman(farang) to know their story as I think many of them have a interesting life style in Thailand, May I suggest about western lady who married with Thai guy. As my knowleadge in the pass mostly Thai quite not accept this kibd of martied but I think it s change a bit for now. Anyway I really like your content very much as I am traveller in many countries.
