Phil's singing is ethereal. His voice is unique and not just in tone, but it's very reflective somehow. When I hear him sing, I can't even think straight because I'm just overcome with emotion. I really don't know if there were any effects added to his vocals, but it almost sounds like there are two singers inside of Phil. Like, I can almost hear two tones or something. It's always struck me as odd and amazing.

Phil is a legend among rock legends. Saw him live about 10 years ago and it opened my eyes (and ears) to just how good a musician and singer he really is. Go back to 1985 and watch his Live Aid performance at the piano - no theatrics - just a genuinely amazing performance with a piano and a microphone. No auto tune - no reverb, no delays etc - just a heartfelt performance. His music is timeless and the 80’s and 90’s music scene wouldn’t be the same with him (and Genesis). All his work on movie soundtracks is icing on a career that I am grateful to have been able to experience. My favorite Phil Collins song is arguably on of his least famous - We Said Hello Goodbye. If you are reading this now and never heard it - go have a listen - it’s a testament to all of his talent.

What's unique about his voice is how well it sits in a mix, when he took over his Genesis bandmates commented that he gave the music more room to breathe. Vocally his peak year was 1983. Listen to the studio version of Against All Odds or Mama, they're both staggeringly good and amazing he could sing them live exactly the same. Every tour since then his voice has declined slightly... yet he makes it work. His experience kicks and he nails it.

Phil has always taken his vocal to the very edge; that is part of his magic. The fact that he’s been able to do so for the past (soon to be) 50 years is a true testament to his unbeatable stamina! I deeply respect his versatility, and his overwhelming musicality shines through in the way he sings. That’s why he’s touched so my hearts through the years. He understands how to convey emotion in ways that only a gifted few can match. That goes to show how important it is to not “just” be a singer, but actually gain insight into the engine bay of songwriting, arrangement, production and I could go on. I’ve both heard and worked with one too many singers who don’t manage this, and they fail to impress me. Vocal technique is just a drop in the ocean of skills one needs to aquire in order to reach the level of legends such as Phil.

I freaked out because he was huge at the time. On my way out I stopped to say hello, big fan etc then told him his record was selling in my store like hot cakes. I expected the usual fluff off. The man couldn't have been nicer or classier. He stood up extended his hand and said "nice to meet you, i'm Phil and you are?" ...small gesture I never forgot. We chatted for 5 minutes....great guy.

Phil Collins is indeed a really great singer. I've looked up to him since I first heard him somewhere at around 8 years old, probably. His vocals are so pleasant and warm to the heart and his lyrics cut right through the heart no matter what he sings about. There is always that wonderful moment in his live shows when he goes way high up the notes and nails it! Guess there no such other person who ever did as much as he did taking all his talent and the hard work to achieve what he achieved presenting us so many hits with such great a share of music for us to listen to decades ahead. I believe Phil is a great singer because he's been working on his voice for many many years. He sang with one of his first bands, Flaming Youth, in 1969. This was followed by extensive background vocals for Peter Gabriel during early Genesis years. He also did frequent guest vocals in the '70s and became lead singer for Genesis in 1976. Phil is a true hardworking musician, constantly working on his craft. He is also one of the best drummers I've ever seen and his rhythmic sense s top notch. A true pro.

It's pretty amazing for someone like Phil Collins to come singing in the shadows of such a unique singer as Peter Gabriel, so much so that he even sounded like Peter (at first by doing harmonies with Peter, and then out of necessity, when he left Genesis, and had to do his material), but then become a uniquely recognizable singer in his own right. Back in the 70s he used to sing in a high range using his 'mixed voice' a lot. He somehow managed to add more chest voice and a little grit in that same range over the years. IMO he patiently and consistently let his singing mature until he started his solo career. Just compare live recordings of 'Seconds Out' (1977) with the ones from the Invisible Touch tour 10 years later, the progress he had made is just amazing.

Yes! Genesis is my second favorite British band with Queen being at the top. I prefer Genesis with Phil Collins singing versus Peter Gabriel, too.

Not sure if he impressed me much with his voice , but still he is Phil Collins. I think his songs is what impressed me. Legend Why not do Bob Marley? Is he a good Singer at all? Or is he just a story teller with amazing melodies? Or is his voice also great?

Disney Tarzan (my kids loved that). In the Air Tonight, Land of Confusion, ABACAB there are too many Ken. Just one of the voices and and music in the sound track of my life. Agree 100% about Phil and Genesis. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hi Ken. I am a huge fan of yours. I was put onto you by our main singer Tim Murdoch in our band. So glad you are a brother in Christ. I am taking singing lessons as a drummer which is different level of singing. I am so envious of the likes of Ringo, Phil Collins and Don Henley from the Eagles who all make it look so easy. Is there any advice you can offer a drummer/singer? God bless you and your family.

I don't know what it is about a Phil Collins song that is just always good. For me it's not really his voice, but the music composition somehow. I wish I could put my finger on it, but every song I hear by him just always sounds so catchy.

Phil had an interesting vocal development, from the pure, falsetto voice he had when he backed Peter which threw every Genesis fan into panic when rumors came out he was going to be the lead singer, to the vocalist who gave us Mama, arguably his best vocal performance. From Trick to ATTW3 he did a fine job, perhaps without much character but certainly adequate, he blossomed on Duke and literally exploded on Abacab and please don't confuse what he was singing with how he was singing it. I saw Genesis live on the Abacab tour in 81 and Phil was amazing, powerful, perfect pitch, a lot of control and expression. Starting from We can't Dance his voice became increasingly nasal, as he was losing power and then of course he completely lost his voice.

Ken, I'd really love to see your reacts and thoughts about Peter Gabriel. I really want to hear something about him from your view, especially about his "gritty voice" / "voce graffiata", his technic. How to replicate it without hurting ourselves. Thanks!

Gosh Phil Collins...such a beautiful voice. For the most part I’d say most of the songs he does, whether with Genesis or solo, sounds like it belongs in an arena. Songs like “Take Me Home” and “Too Deep” (my favorite he does) usually make me picture a large stage. I don’t know if I’m making sense at all but I love the airy atmospheric vibe most the songs give off. Just loved “Can’t Hurry Love” with him being a big Motown fan and “Easy Lover” who he did with someone from Earth, Wind, and Fire. And him being a highly skilled drummer just makes it even better. It’s insane how long he’s been playing for (or was playing for) and his voice packs a punch. Definitely one for the ages 😊 Lol hope this wasn’t too long

Phil is a workaholic and because he is-he is a credit to the music industry. However, music genius that he is he has written A LOT of easy listening music. Every major city has an easy listening radio station-which gets played in call centers and cubicle areas-lots and lots of Phil during the work day. So, Phil also believes that he is reincarnated and that he was a defender of The Alamo in San Antonio. Using his fortune, he amassed Alamo relics auctioned here and there. Also, walking near the Alamo he spotted a shop for sale. He bought the shop, then conducted his own archeological dig under the shop. He found bullets, belt buckles and rusted knives left from the battle (immediately after the battle soldiers were cremated in giant funeral pyres). Phil donated all of these relics and also what he got in the auctions to The Alamo. Phil is an overall great guy and great musician.

People don't understood how phil collins good is in singing ... In the middle of 80s he was incredible, maybe the most incredible live singer... Listen, live in wembley (genesis) domino, tonight tonight ecc.. He had a incredible vocal range.
