Viewer perception is one thing, but I imagine all the prep you have to do just for each trip let alone all the editing will be hard work, so thanks, please keep the fine content coming Scotland's Mountains. I'm not long back from a gnarly solo wild camp up Mt Keen on Monday night and a more settled one down the south side at Glen Mark. I returned back to the summit the next day as I couldn't get across the fords to see Queen's Well. Each time the trig point was ice upon ice. Thanks again.

Your videos are so well made Murray I'm not surprised it takes longer than the walks to edit them sometimes! I actually enjoy the editing side of things though, just something about it that pleases me. I don't have all of the equipment, just using my phone at the moment. I got a drone but I'm too lazy to get it out at times and I also got a wired microphone which I have never tried to use yet! I would love to have better equipment but you're right it is all very expensive. I just got myself some new £££ boots because I'm sick of ruining cheap ones within a year all of the time. And even though I have a smidgen of your following, I still feel a pressure to keep the socials going, it's just never been me to share everything online about my life but now I've started it I do feel like I have to keep doing it! I don't mind if I don't gain a huge following though because essentially I enjoy the whole process and when I'm old and can't do it anymore I will have tons of memories to look back on 😊 I don't always comment on your videos but they really are of a professional quality and an inspiration to me and no doubt many others so please keep up the great work 😊

Instagram is bad for giving you FOMO but as you say you’ve got to remind yourself they likely have a full time job and a family too. Even the full time influencers have to worry about writing articles, doing talks etc. Your dedication to posting every Wednesday is quite remarkable. Not something that I would commit to as it seems you’ve almost took on a second job. That said as long as the enjoyment is still there then that’s what matters. Becky The Traveler made a good point on a podcast about Instagram and it applies to all platforms too “post content because you want to, not because you need to”. I’m sticking to that ethos.

Let us not forget that you have to walk a lot farther than as an "ordinary" person, just to get a lot of the shots. IE. Walk up place the camera, walk back, turn around and walk back to get the shot, walk past the camera, then turn around and go back for the camera, etc. Your effort really is appreciated and I'm sure it provides inspiration and guidance for a lot of people who take to the hills after watching the videos that you, and a number of other mountain walkers, post on KZitem. then there is all the post production work that goes into it. Once again your efforts are really appreciated. Cheers Murray long may you and your viewers, continue to enjoy the mountains and the videos that you produce.

@@marionb299 as soemone who is starting to produce outdoors content, yes it's a behind the curtain moment to realise that every walking away shot, they have to run back! @@harduphiker have a look at some Bushman and Blue videos on YT. Alan doesn't even try to hide the fact that the "walk past" shots are staged. Hi Murray, This is the very well explained reality of KZitem content creators. Mrs and I try and treat the filming part as secondary to enjoying the adventure, as much as we can! It can too easily become the main reason for getting out which, in my opinion, is the wrong priority. It’s also why we keep the filming equipment to a very minimum, minimum faff and less to go wrong [GoPro, Phone, at times a drone] I actually find the editing part quite therapeutic though, am I weird! Don’t answer that! 😂 … all the best D&L.

I love your videos and know the efforts you go to in making them they are a weekly joy thanks so much. I am a total amateur which can be seen by my channel . Very interesting video this week. I was criticised by some friends accusing me of being a fine weather walker as my you tube videos were all shot in great weather. As your aware being a regular hill walker you endure all sorts of weather so I did one you tube video entitled a year walking in the Brecon Beacons I filmed small bits on every walk I did that year to show my mates the reality of hill walking in mostly poor weather lol they now think I am a nutter😂 keep the videos coming they are truly inspiring Andy Kingdom

Love these honest videos Murray. It’s important for viewers to understand our difficulties and it’s important for creators to show they’re not alone. I would add that I break something every time I create a backpacking video! It’s usually AV gear, but on my last one I broke my MSR Reactor Stove and put a hole in my Hilleberg footprint. Both would have been avoided if I wasn’t creating content! My other pet hate is the feeling of pressure, that’s why I sometimes take breaks from the social machines. Lastly, I do get jealous from full-time content creators, especially those with large paid Patreon and Membership support. To be fair, I guess they’ve earned the privilege of their viewers paying their bills.

I havent read through the other comments but I'm sure i will be echoing many other people with my thoughts. One reason i keep coming back is that your focus is on the hills and routes, and not on promoting a pair of boots or a coat you were given. I respect when you have spoken about gear, it is gear you have purchased. I have unfollowed other channels when it felt like it became about the ads for their sponsors who give them free gear as opposed to the main content. I don't mind those who mention Squarespace or sponsors like that, as they are easy to skip over and only small parts of the video. I also love your videos because Scotland is stunning, but not a place i get to very often, its a long way from Birmingham, and my wife doesnt travel well so our family holidays never include Scotland as potential destinations. I do Snowdonia a lot, and am starting on Lakes summits, but Scotland is something else so i love seeing your adventures on 4K on my big TV! I also love how you make your walks happen, I'm trying to convince my wife that i need a small camper to be in the mountains to start a nice early walk before sunrise! Your videos are some of the best out there, i really appreciate the time and effort you put into them!

All of what you talked about is exactly why I haven’t started my own channel, I’ve had some experience in my life with how taxing and stressful things can become. I call Facebook fakebook I’ve never felt jealous of the all smiling photos because life is generally hard for all of us, and a picture hides a thousand lies, I am always asking myself how you actually do it Murray, as you often talk about family and work as well and you don’t portray this “Best Life” crack, by any means- I guess that’s one of the reasons I love your channel, it feels more real, because it is, you often talk about time restraints and the way you express delight when things go right ( or wrong) is so true to life. So thank you for talking about these things, I hope you can keep your channel ad free like you want to, I like that. I suppose what you could do is advertise the equipment you really like and use or would want to if you had the money for it and call the company first and tell them you would like to advertise their product and ask them to pay you for doing it. That way you can keep your ethics and your principles in tact and also your creativity to do with how you want to advertise it. Whoever makes Scotch eggs should have paid you a fortune by now Murray 😂😂😂 thanks Murray. Murray, honest and balanced "different angle" take on things as always. In years gone by, I'd wait excitedly for professional TV productions such as Jimmie Macgregor, Weir's way or the much lauded "Munro show". ......everyone had 4 TV channels and you had to check ceefax/Radio Times to make sure you didn't miss it. The content you produce on your own blows the old shows out of the water mate! And that is not meant in any way to disrespect those (multi staffed/fully funded) shows. Technology moves on. The you tube episodes you produce are peerless IMHO. Especially when it comes to Scotland. Your wrong about the eggs though........so wrong. Pork pies rule!!!!! Best wishes from Motherwell

Murry, I think that you have the balance just right. Once you start testing out kit that has been given to you by a manufacturer, that opens the door to more stress. You would be worrying about have I got the review right or if it's shocking, then they would be on your case. This is why your films stand out and they appeal to people. Carry on doing what you are doing. This is just my opinion others may not agree 😮 Who cares 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Seriously I spend a lot of time out doors and watching your films is like you bringing the outdoors to KZitem 😊

Thank you and completely agree Murray which is why I love/comment/share/like your videos because I know how much effort you and Gerry, Mark and also Ray on his channel give. Folk are absolutely oblivious to how much sheer hard work and stress goes into running an outdoor YT channel, the time, cost, planning, travel, editing and effort is as much as a full time job packed into a day or two a week and then the jealous trolls come along to try and ruin your labour of love with the dislikes and snidey comments. I know all too well about the trolls, getting lots of that at the moment with some pretty personal body shaming comments, so much so I just stopped filming because its confidence sapping...aye, you need to be thick skinned...

I think most people realize you are documenting your adventures-not your whole life. Your adventures make us fall in love with the views and we are thankful for all you do to bring them to us. However, your time off camera is your own and really none of our business. I’ve lived enough years to know life isn’t always a bunch of roses-for anybody-so showing me your mountains doesn’t mean your life is perfect. Showing me perfect weather days doesn’t mean all Scotland is basking in the sunshine. All it means to me is that I’m blessed to see you enjoy your amazing hobby and your beautiful country. Don’t overthink it. Just enjoy what you do, take care of yourself and family first, and share whatever you want when you can.

Thank you very much for these intimate insights, Murray. I have been watching your videos regularly for about 2 years now and I appreciate your work very much. I‘ve been to Scotland several times and I love to see places I know and especially places I haven’t seen because I am not a climber and I don‘t dare to go on such strenuous hikes like you - thanks for that! I wonder why there is no opportunity to support your channel like others. Have I just missed it?

Thought provoking video, Murray - thanks for that - it's good to appreciate the wider perspective. Appreciate all the hard work you put in but i, along with most others, love watching your adventures - inspiring rather than envy-inducing. Please keep doing what you're doing

Cheers Murray. Still don't know how you manage a video a week with all else in your life. Much appreciated for all that you do and the joy that your vids bring to many. Well jealous of you being near Aviemore. Was gonna pop down this weekend to Dalraddy campsite for some good grub at the food forest yurt and coffee van there. Worth a visit with family if your up this way again. 👍

Have been thinking about this youtube video and i just wonder if you are missing out somewhere. I subscribe to 74 channels from art to camping and motorbike restorations and lots more, from all over the world and 30% are full time youtubers and some nowhere near as big a channel as yours. You deserve all you can get, we love your channel.

An important reminder to take what we see on social media with a pinch of salt. The work you put in is always appreciated though. Have you ever considered a Patreon? Understand it might add to your workload, but I’m certain there would be an appetite for it & it might dull the pain of expensive gear, if only a little bit!

Hi Murray, always enjoy your videos, and fully understand what all goes into the making of videos. Editing is time consuming, and so to is going back to fetch the camera after you have walked into the distance😉 l dont know how you fit it all in with everything that goes on in life, im just glad you bring us these lovely adventures, thank you...Alioban ❤

Great video, Murray. It's really good that you point out some of the realities behind the idyllic images. But, to be fair, I think anyone watching your videos should have a good idea of how much work you are putting in behind the scenes to produce them - the standard is very high.

Watching this video on one screen and the 9-5 on the other on a Friday afternoon. Great video Murray, keep it up and remember, always wear sunscreen. Ps. do not reply to this comment.

Another fantastic video. Really good reminder. I love your videos but it's a really great reality check to remember both how much work you put in, in your own time and also that your life isn't actually that different to mine. Cheers man.

So true, my KZitem channel (another username from this one) is a hobby. I do what I can, when I can. Family life comes 1st. 👍

Thanks Murray..you are humble about it and transparent about the reality of what you do and what is involved. My nephew advised us to do this 12 years ago, due to the content we also captured, but i admire your patience in doing it, maybe one day, but not sure we would enjoy everyone seeing our life on film....unless as you say you can block users who troll ?

Another very informative video , i realised the amount of work this involved. As you say , probably more time in front of the pc than being outside sometimes. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and wish you all the very best with them. 👍

I completely understand your points here Murray. I am a musician and people think you get paid for doing something you love and that is it. There is a lot of travelling, rehearsing and very often you're lucky to actually break even. I suppose its the same as many things, there are a lot of things going on behind the scenes that people don't see. I hope that makes sense. As always, another great video and keep them coming!!👍👍

I appreciate what you explained in this video. The call to issue fantastic content is your personal one. I value what it takes, the affect on the rest of your life, how demanding it all is. The best I can do is to tell you your videos, you, who you are make an incredible impression on me.

Murray, great heartfelt insight to the realities of keeping a quality content flow for your channel and balancing that with dealing with the 'real stuff' in your life.. i thank you for the effort and appreciate what it takes to put it all together. I struggle these days to get up the stairs due to health issues, so having a window on your adventures cheers me up no end. Jamie

Murray if you made a membership to join where we can learn howto edit and put vids together ourselfs and more behind the camera tips and route planning im sure myself and many people would love to learn from them and will earn extra money to pay the rest of the petrol trip both directions lol , i honestly think your videos are brilliant but i understand that even more time and effort is likely something you don't have , hopefully one day you will get to do this full time Do you have a place we can donate ??? or have you looked at utilizing a content manager like hootsuite? that streamlines alot of "time spent" on posting replying ect
