F-22 aerial refueling is one of the most crucial and challenging operation undertaken by the Raptor pilots. The F-22 has its flushed aerial refueling receptacle located behind the cockpit. The boom-receptacle method is used for F-22 aerial refueling. Tankers such as KC-10 Extender, KC-135, and KC-46A Pegasus are usually used for mid-air refuelling the Raptor. Some fighters and helicopters use a different method, the probe-and-drougue method for aerial refueling. The boom-receptacle method offers a higher fuel flow rate above the probe-and-drogue method. T dedicated boom operator operates the boom from his control station while the pilot flies the aircraft steady. The pilot uses Pilot Direct Lights on the tanker for better visual acuity during the approach to the tank and during the refueling operation.
