I'm just tired of housing costs skyrocketing and Utah being the crappiest place for regular people's wages to keep up with those costs.
@scottdsteele

Agreed. Housing is a good old fashioned supply / demand equation and we just need more homes. For those who live here and hate the high prices and also do not want to see more growth (building more homes), you can't see prices come down or even stop climbing unless we build many more homes

It’s true, that certain cities are stopping housing developments in order to stay affordable or small even cause housing developments to go elsewhere. I’m a civil engineer and honestly the biggest thing I worry about is transportation infrastructure in Utah. Like literal one highway (I15) to service all the cities in Utah means that if one person gets into a car crash.. we’re all late to work 😂

I think that growing up instead of out will be a bad thing. One of the things that makes Utah unique is that most of us live side by side or just in 2 or 3 story apartments. I have always felt that population density increases dissatisfaction and results in more violent cities. When people get crammed in together things change a lot.

I live in northeastern Utah and there are so many people living here now, the town is busting at the seams. Housing is almost nonexistent for us natives as people from out of state are paying cash and buying up all the homes. I was homeless 2 months ago after a breakup with my two children, we were living in a friends camper with no water or electricity, the low income apartments have such long waiting lists and no affordable housing. There are many people here living in their vehicles, these issues are being ignored by the mayor and commissioners.

The new buildings projects are embezzlement schemes theses developers are getting investigated on. The FDC SLC branch just got shut down cause it was so corrupted they just decided to have Denver ranch now responsible for SLC oversight. As the former FDCs employees are being indicted. Can't imagine the inner dealings to be dug up as the buildings sit vacant. Salt Lake is Salt lake. It's in Utah. We can't even put on the kind of Comic/pop culture conventions roster level of guests because were not that town. We have to stay in our lane. I was born and raised in Utah and have lived here my whole life. Housing is stupid expensive now and makes me wonder how my kids will be able to afford a house if they decide to live here. I was lucky enough to buy my first house in 2011 and got it for an amazing price and we have a lot of equity. The problem my family faces now is that we’ve grown out of our house and need something bigger now that we have 3 kids. With prices so high, high interest, and inflation on everything else even with our seemingly large amount of equity we can’t afford a bigger house. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for what I have, but it’s really frustrating we can’t get something bigger for a decent price. We’ve looked and even older houses that need a lot of work are 800,000.

@@scottdsteele that is simply wrong. People moving here from a state with higher pay and where houses are valued higher are able to pay more for their houses. Not only that, they pay cash for the house. It happened all the time in St. George. I worked in the construction industry for several years. It was astounding how many new builds were being paid for in cash by someone out of state. How is anyone supposed to compete with that? Does the availability of houses impact the price as well? Yes. But when sellers know they can ask for higher prices because an influx of people are moving here from another state with higher wage- it matters. Saying it doesn't is ignoring a factor in the housing market.

Very happy Governor Cox didn't get to pass the subsidies. Subsidies simply cause house price inflation because more money is available to buy homes. For example, if you could afford $400k plus $50k in subsidies, you could offer $450k. Now the builder can sell the same home for an extra $50k. Those subsidies then increase taxes. You end up with higher-priced homes and taxes. It's better to make the builder work more to make more. Streamlining the process of building creates more competition for builders to build more and price their homes more affordably to compete with other builders. This brings prices down.

@scottdsteele

Hi! Thanks for sharing. I see so many comments that want to point out these same things so it's something that's certainly talked about. How specifically do you not see the separation between church and state? This is a narrative that's regurgitated over and over and over again and has been my entire life and long before I was here as well. I'm challenging people to look at the facts and give examples. I fully understand that most politicians here are members identifying with the local predominant faith, but only 42% of the population is of that same faith. Why are people voting for them? It's not that the church runs the state because it does not at all... but those in office can and do share the values and opinions to a large extent that are shared amongst members of the church therefore influencing policy. I would love to talk about specific examples of what you're saying.

As someone who moved RECENTLY from NJ to SLC, SLC is objectively better in everyway still than NJ esepcially comparing to NYC and Philly and other cities in the tristate area. This includes renting and buying house costs. While high still cheaper than the mid east coast...however, let's keep it that way...please...I BEG you.

@@scottdsteeleI’m an 8th generation Utahn, love the state! I lived in Colorado for over 20 years as well…then back East for college. Utah to me was always a “best kept secret” one of the best places in the entire country…I especially realized this as I moved back in my early 20’s. Sure “we’re not close to California” as you mentioned….but let’s not hide the fact that it’s just a matter of time before we will be. California folks are coming here in droves. Our country’s open borders down south isn’t helping. We may not be Cali yet, but my feeling is that we sure as heck will be eventually. It’s just a matter of time before we get too populated, and politically speaking as states get overcrowded they start to be run like Cali…our state will get flipped to blue and then we become California with similar policy. I don’t want to believe it, and it may take a long time, but I have realized it’s inevitable. The “growing up” of the state is NOT a good thing.

Getting jobs seems really impossible since 2021, in slc. For young and old alike. Most get jobs here through friends or relatives if they r available. We have several family members and friends who have been looking since 23 and still no luck. They r also wanting bilingual qualification to hire a lot of the time, they say. Theft and violence is getting so prevent that most don't even bother reporting it. The police in the last 3 years imo don't seem to care anyway😢 when u call them. They take 4 ever to come, if they even do. It's hard to feel safe here anymore. Then there is the housing and power costs here. They are heading up to LA standards and that's horrifying. Change may be inevitable but more good change is what we want to see. Ty for this episode.

Thanks for sharing! The facts are here despite what you might be feeling and experiencing: - Jobs here are easier to come by than just about every other state with the lowest unemployment rate and the 3rd best economy and yes, being bilingual is a nice advantage too - Crime in Utah is 9th best in the nation - Law enforcement response time here is far better than most states - Utilities, across the board, are less expensive here than every single state in the nation I understand how it feels when everyone's costs have jumped through these last 4 years but the facts are still right here showing how Utah ranks compared to other states.

Ive been here in Salt Lake for 59 years; let's say 40 years of any sort of paying attention: It's grown way too much in this time! My beef with what's going on is these 4 & 5 level prison cells they call apartments; that bring in huge quantities of people in little sardine can apartments, (most don't speak English) it doesn't take a economical genius to see why they are doing that and some people really can't handle taking care of a real house, but wow are they nasty looking! I feel they are going to bring heavy loads of crime too. we are in no way running out of room, maybe in the valley; dang drive out 30-40 min endless room! especially west. Seems to be all about money, that's for sure. Here is to hope that the powers that be will not just line their wallets with tons of cash but really try to make things affordable especially for the younger folks just starting out! Most kids are living at home while adults; or both work and they to live in a 1 bedroom tiny place, and get sterilized so they cant have kids, I think we have a even bigger problem that the lake drying up.
