Interesting results. I would point out that the standard WD-40 formula is not meant for long-term rust protection as the volatile petrol distillates evaporate after a few weeks. Such tests usually need a reference part that is not treated with anything. The key in rust protection is to provide a relatively durable barrier against moisture. I would think those that provide a drying film would be best for parts that are subject to manipulation. Reason being non-drying oil is more easily rubbed off. Therefore I like the T-9 and wax. I have found that camellia oil eventually dries after left for a period of time.

I like camellia oil have used it for 35 years. But I live near the famed Japan Woodworker n Berkeley. Which highly influenced me.( long before it was sold to Woodcraft) A few years before I started collecting and restoring antique woodworking tools. Never heard of eggs. That was amazazing. Just discovered you today You have a new subscriber

One of the things to take notice of is the pH, if the blade is going to stored you don't want it left in an acidic environment. The reason that oils have low pH (acidic) is that it is a cheap way to create 'creep': penetration. Creep is vitally important in protection of metal, it has to 'get there first', before the water. Acids are the inevitable by-product of chemical breakdown involving manufacture of polymers. Penetrating fluids with balanced pH have avoided the 'cheap an nasty' route: try Rivolta TRS Plus by Fuchs.

The WD in wd40 stands for water displacement hence why it doesn't work for lubing. Content creator aquachigger would most likely be a good source for preservation of steel as he retrieves metals from rivers etc & has to prep them i.e canon balls, muskets, pistols to stop them rusting. Personally waste engine oil sprayed & a good amount of dry dirt mowing in dry conditions works fantastic on my mowers (steel based). It creates a water proof barrier. The thicker the layers the better. The disadvantage is any cracks are hidden unlike paint which shows them if any.

Phosphoric acid as in coke a cola drinks and vinegar affect steel greatly, depends on its composition whether the rusting is inhibited.

Hahaha... oddly I love the smell of paste wax! I guess it's because it's mixed with fond memories of shop projects.

Since you asked for feedback on your method, I was wondering how bad the rust would have been on a control blade, cleaned, but no protection at all. As a side note, I like marvel mystery oil. Thin oil, but, to me, a pleasing odor. Thanks for sharing your experiment.

All my tools are left outside under a covered porch. They are exposed to all the moisture in the air, and we get a ton of winter rain. (PNW). I havent used eggs, nor camelia oil. But I have used everything else. As a blacksmith and wood craftsmen, I find only one method actually seals out the moisture/ rust for years at a time. Takes a very little work but its impenetrable. I should find a way of marketing it. Would make me millions. (ps: paste wax, beeswax, mineral oil, wax/oil blend, wd40 (the worst), etc etc all fail in short order (month or less)

Love the video, very intrested in the egg history, and tech. What did they did use or do, (wood workers) use in the past? One thing I have found is clean the blade after using it. That thick gummy stuf is not good on a blade after 24 hr.

If I had a very valuable steel blade, I would put egg on it right away with nary a qualm.

if your planning on not using the plane regularly it is in my mind better to put the blade in to an oil filled container for longer storage.

Very interesting video, despite egg working so well, I’m not sure i can bring myself to smear egg yoke all over my tools :). A suggestion for the next comparison is to also have a control with no product to compare everything against.

I recently moved to an area with higher humidity than where I shot the first video. I think I want to re-do it and see if that changes things. Having a control is a great idea

I’m a paste wax fan, not of the smell though. WD-40 is next in line with me. Great videos keep it up!
