As a practing attorney for 36 years, I can tell you that all a law school teaches you is how to think like an attorney and if your lucky, you will learn how to sit for and pass the bar. Law School teaches you nothing about the business of practice of law. Law school does not teach you that if there is an issue with a client, and the client complaints to the Ethics committee, you are pursumed guilty until proven business.

I retired 3 years ago after litigating for 40 years. You are absolutely right. I think the 3rd year of law school should be practical training in skills such as passing the bar, civility, ethics, managing time and client expectations, and self care. I never was interested in Big Law. I began my career as a criminal defense attorney and after one year, I moved to another State where I was a Legal Aid attorney for 30 years, and ended my career working in a small firm representing public entities. The summer after my 1L, I worked for a United Methodist Church social services agency where I came up with the idea of establishing a medical clinic in the so called Black ghetto which still exists today. Other than being a father, this was the most important accomplishment of my life.

The other important thing you did not mention is that the grades are important primarily important to obtaining your first job. I went to a prestigous New York Law School, with the idea that I was going into private practice and starting my own law firm. There is no doubt the first year of law school is the most important. I learned more about the practice of law by working at 2 different types of out of town law firms. I worked in law firms after law schools for 5 years after graduation and then I went into my own law firm. I have not looked back yet.

The Aspiring Boss I think you should do a video on PWI VS HBCU law schools. The legal profession is inherently racist. So, talking about how both schools prepare you for the legal profession. However, realistically speaking PWI’s just prepare you on how the legal profession looks in terms of race. HBCU’s you can develop so many relationships with black lawyers across the U.S. This is whats makes it a harder decisions for me.

People are so dumb that they will honestly tell you "I went to Law School because I wanted to be like the character Elle Woods in the movie "Legally Blond." Then they don't understand why they can't find a job afterward, and are stuck with six figures of debt in student loans (which cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, of course). You have to be pretty slow-witted to go to law school in the US in 2024, we already have far, far too many lawyers, and not nearly enough jobs/paying clients for them. The law schools just want you money, they don't see students as law students at all, but rather as "student loan conduits" (the money flows form the government, in loans, through the hapless student, and straight into the law school's bank account. Professors drive Mercedes purchased with their students student loan dollars. It's a huge scam; don't be a sucker, don't fall for it.

im a 17 year old highschool student i start my senior year in September. Studying in law has definitely caught my eye but I have nobody in my family who has taken that path. So I have a few questions! Im alreadu taking a criminal studies class for my senior year to get a headstart before college. I was wondering what should I focus on studying (anything you'd suggest I can start looking over now) I so badly want to be prepared for this. Would you suggest possibly becoming a paralegal before becoming a lawyer for experience? Also for the bar exam how hard truly was it? Can you explain more to me how you can start working for firms to get experiences, could you start when youre already in college studying social sciences. Also when you mentioned financial issues since I have literally no family to helpe with money issues, im quite literally going to be on my own unless I could get loans or scholarships. So how would you suggest I create my plan to pay off students loans? Im sorry for this lengthy comment, just trying my best to prepare.

As an older person, this doesn't make law schools sound hard. It makes present-day college seem really watered down. No wonder so many Bachelor's Degrees people don't have any basic skills or capacity for rigor. Law School sounds like what college used to me (and should still be).

Love your video. I just stumbled on it. You have really good insight and your tips were so helpful. I’m older and haven’t yet finished my bachelor’s degree. However, I will never give up aspiring to be a lawyer. I know that I can master law school and your video confirmed it. You’re so natural in your delivery of such vital information. Thank you so much. Please keep posting.

I have so many questions, but I am an undergrad going to a community college. I’ll be transferring to OSU to finish with my bachelors. How do I enter into Pre-Law? What should I do in my undergrad years that would help me prepare for Law School?

I think this is good 👍🏿 if you want to be a lawyer so you can apply it to your clients situation. You need to memorize and apply it to your client’s situation

Hi, one of my biggest issues about law school and it’s paying for it. My question can you elaborate on the jobs if one doesn’t want to be a practicing attorney?

The cost is terrifying for Law School. I want to be a Assistant District Attorney. That’s why I also want to be a healthcare marketing director before I go to law school.

I'm a year 11 student and am looking to study law. Your videos are so informative and entertaining at the same time! I'm a girl and seeing female lawyers winning in life is inspiring. You're also so pretty and now that's just unfair - how can someone have both beauty and brains like leave some perfection for the rest of us 😭.

So is it pretty much impossible to work a job while going to law school? It sounds like with the time commitments, you have to just be a full time student with no other outside commitments.

Yes some professors are nicer than others! My goal was to always at least attempt to answer the question. It’s ok to get the answer wrong.
