Good news: the waitlist is not a hard no! You still have a chance at getting into your desired school. While I wouldn't recommend banking on getting into the school, there are some steps you should probably take if you want to maximize your chances of moving from "waitlisted" to "accepted".
First and foremost, do not contact the UC unless explicitly instructed to do so. If they have not already told you you're position on the waitlist, they probably will not release this information to you at any point. Do not continually hound them asking for updates. If you feel inclined to contact them, wait to do so until after the SIR deadline has passed (June 1st for transfers). Even still, waitlist decision could take months to return.
Essay tips:
-write in essay format
-utilize all the word count they give you
-Convey these three things:
1) your personal accomplishments/developments since you have submitted your application
2) explain why you are interested in that specific school. go into DETAIL
3) state your commitment to the school
-do NOT beg for a spot
I hope this helps you! Good luck :)
