Buddy recorded 'What To Do' in his New York apartment in December 1958 but, according to Buddy's mother, he wrote it a lot earlier than the recording. Writing to John Beecher in the 1960's, Ella Holley said "Incidentally 'What To Do' is one of my favorite songs of Buddy's and I love the way he sings it. There is a meaning in it that most people do not know about - he wrote this after he and Echo (his *real girl*, that is) had broken their engagement..."
