So, you have your first car and you're absolutely thrilled that you can get out and go where you want, when you want. But, what do you need to know about that car? What do you need to know about filters, oil, tires, and all that "Other stuff" that goes along with owning a car. In this video, I give you some simple. basic things to know as a new car owner that will help you get the most life from your car, and the most enjoyment from being a car owner. Below are some of those items. Watch the video for full details.
- Keep it clean. Hand wash. Kits are much cheaper than car wash. Vac inside, use leather protector or armor all especially on dash and areas that get sun. Get a sun shield to keep dash and steering wheel cool and protect them. Keep all windows clean, in and out, especially windshield and back window.
- Check and change the oil. Every 5000 miles is what I recommend. Learn where to check the oil and do this regularly. Newer cars, once a month, older cars more often.
- Check tire pressure and tire wear. Get and learn how to use a tire pressure guage. They are super cheap. Watch for wear on the tires. Rotate them regularly. A lot of people never do this but it helps the tires last longer. About once a year for normal driving habits. Cars that have different size tires front to back, you can't. Front to back is OK, some tires these days are directional and can't be swapped from one side to the other.
- Drive it with radio off regularly and listen for changes in the sound. Don't ignore clunks, squeeks, or rattles when you drive, turn, or go over bumps. These could be steering and suspension components that can be dangerous if ignored. Just know the sounds your car makes so if there is an odd one, you notice it.
- Don't ignore check engine or other dash lights, especially low coolant or low oil conditions. Keep a bottle of oil in the trunk so if you get a low oil message, you can add it and get to the first place to check/get more. Coolant, don't try to fill hot. Check regularly and fill as needed when the engine is cool. Car shouldn't keep needing coolant. If it does, get it checked to see if a hose is bad. They are cheaper to replace than an engine that overheats.
- Wipers and fluid - Replace wipers when they stop clearing the windshield well, and make sure you have washer fluid designed for winter use if you are in cold climate. You can also get winter wipers that resist snow and ice buildup better.
- Brakes. If you hear a squeal or grinding when stopping, have your brakes checked right away. Your pads may be at the end of thier life. If so, and you can't stop, that's not generally going to end well.
- Keep small emergency things in the car. Bag of change for parking meters, tissues, masks, flashlight, knife, extra oil, blanket, TP, whatever else you feel is important to keep. Sun screen and mosquito repellant are 2 I always have handy.
- Check the bulbs and replace when one is not working
- Change the air filter at least once a year, more often if you live or work on dirt roads or have a lot of dirt in the area.
