On the worshipping god 24/7 in heaven, CS Lewis has a good way of looking at this. At the most basic level, worship is just an expression of our love/appreciation. Every time we look at God in heaven, he is doing something amazing/revealing how good he is, that it blows us away, so we just can’t help but be amazed by him/worship him.

I would love to cover an alternative view of the intermediate state with you guys if you are open to it. I think Scripture is pretty clear that we are currently waiting to be with the Lord and that all are not aware of anything until the resurrection. Scripture tells us that in death there is no remembrance (Ps 6:5), that we go into silence (Ps 115:17), our thoughts perish (Ps 146:4), the dead know nothing (Eccl 9:5), and that there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave (Eccl 9:10). The dead are in the grave awaiting resurrection (1 Thess 4:15-16), waiting for our blessed hope (Titus 2:13), what we will be has not yet appeared (1 John 3:2), and when Christ appears then we will appear with him in glory (Col 3:3-4). No man has ascended up to heaven but Christ (John 3:13), not even David who is still in his grave (Acts 2:29, 2:34). He has gone to prepare a place for us and when he comes again he will take us to himself (John 14:3). No eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor the heart of man imagined what God has prepared (1 Cor 2:9). Instead, those who die are metaphorically asleep (dead) in the grave awaiting resurrection (1 Thess 4:15-16). Also, 2 Corinthians 5:8 is one of the most misquoted verses in the Bible. People quote it by saying "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord", but it doesn’t say that. 2 Corinthians 5:8 says, "but we are of good courage and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord." Paul is not claiming that after death that he would immediately be in the presence with the Lord but his greater desire and preference to be absent from our earthly body because of his greater desire to be present with the Lord which requires being further clothed upon with our house which is from heaven. It's also always good to read the surrounding context which expresses this.
@Bioboy590
Ай бұрын
Thank you for pointing out this important view. Randy's whole argument was based on the misquote you listed. I can be in North Dakota, and say "I would to be absent from North Dakota and present in Florida," but that doesn't mean I won't have a layover in Atlanta along the way. Paul never gives a timeline for his absence from his present state and his new home with Jesus.

What would you say then , when Jesus told the man at the cross that , “ You will be with me in paradise”? Wouldn’t a paradise consist of feelings and knowing and experiencing something wonderful around you?
@GraftedTheology
Ай бұрын
@@PT121551 Most of the debate revolves around the presence of the comma that generally appears before the word "today" (sēmeron) in most modern translations. Having the comma before "today" (sēmeron), causes the adverb to refer to the following verb , upholding the traditional understanding of the verse that implies an immediate entry of the criminal into Paradise. However, an alternative placement of the comma after "today" would modify the preceding verb, presenting a different interpretation of Jesus' words: "Truly I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise." Consequently, Jesus' statement would not imply an immediate entry of the criminal into Paradise but rather emphasizes a future assurance of being there. None of our modern marks of punctuation are found until the ninth century. So, by placing the comma after "today," the verse aligns more coherently with the broader context of Scripture and its immediate surroundings. The larger context of Scripture presents that once a person dies, they remain deceased until the resurrection and are not coherent upon death. Therefore, this interpretation supports the idea that the criminal would join Jesus in Paradise at a future time, consistent with the biblical teaching of life after death. There's punctuation evidence, linguistic evidence, and scripture evidence to back this up.
@Bioboy590
Ай бұрын
@@PT121551 First, there's no punctuation in the Greek, so it's unclear if Jesus was saying "I say unto you today, You will be with me in paradise" vs "I say unto you, Today you will be with me in paradise." Second, paradise refers to the pleasant place of rest for souls in sheol. It is not heaven where Jesus went after his resurrection to prepare a place for us. Even when you're asleep, you can experience mental pain or pleasure via dreams, and I see the bliss or torture of sheol to be similar. Similarly, when you're asleep you have no sense of actual time, so it's not like death brings regret for a delay in seeing Christ even for Christians, according to my view. The Bible says the dead in Christ will rise first to join Christ at His return, followed by those who are alive and remain. The church has always looked forward to their resurrection at Christ's return. It just doesn't make sense scripturally or logically to look forward to the resurrection if you already are with Christ immediately upon death, and if your experience of heaven is the same regardless of your embodiment or not.

But if there are prophecies, they will pass away. If there are tongues, they will cease. If there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but whenever the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I set aside the things of a child. 12 For now we see through a mirror ⌊indirectly⌋, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know completely, just as I have also been completely known. 13 And now these three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. W.
